Poll: Who Will Win The 2025 Home Run Derby?

By Darragh McDonald | July 14, 2025 at 1:23pm CDT

The 2025 home run derby takes place tonight at 7pm Central as part of the 2025 All-Star festivities in Atlanta. The field of eight consists of…

  • Byron Buxton, Twins
  • Junior Caminero, Rays
  • Jazz Chisholm Jr., Yankees
  • Oneil Cruz, Pirates
  • Matt Olson, Braves
  • Cal Raleigh, Mariners
  • Brent Rooker, Athletics
  • James Wood, Nationals

Per MLB.com, here is the format:

“In the first round, the eight players each have three minutes or 40 pitches (whichever comes first) to hit as many homers as possible. There is also a bonus period for each player that lasts until they record three outs (any swing that doesn’t result in a home run) within the period. If a player hits a home run of at least 425 feet within the bonus period, the period is extended until the player records a fourth out.

The players with the top four homer totals advance to the semis. In the event of a first-round tie, the player who hit the longest home run during the round advances.

In the semifinals, the format shifts to “knockout style,” with No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3. The seeds are determined solely by the number of home runs each player hit in the first round. Players will have two minutes or 27 pitches in the semifinals and finals, and home run totals from the first round don’t carry over.

Ties in the semifinals or finals are broken by successive three-swing “swing-offs” until there is a winner.

The winners of the two semifinal matchups advance to the finals, where the limits are reduced to two minutes and 27 pitches. The player with the most home runs after that period is crowned Home Run Derby champion.

One final note: Each batter is entitled to one 45-second timeout in each of the three regulation periods, but timeouts can’t be called during the bonus periods or tiebreakers.”

According to Yahoo Sports, $2.5MM will be given out as prize money. The winner gets $1MM and the runner-up $750K. The rest of the money will be shared amongst the other participants. Last year’s champion was Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers but he is not defending his title. He spent some time on the IL in May due to a groin strain and doesn’t want to risk reaggravating that injury, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. He also fouled a ball off his foot here in July and missed a few games.

Of this year’s eight participants, Olson is the only one with previous derby experience. Ronald Acuña Jr. was originally in the lineup to represent the home team but he was scratched with some back tightness, so Olson has stepped in. In 2021, Olson hit 23 home runs in the first round but was edged out by Trey Mancini’s 24, with that year’s format being a head-to-head bracket style. He has 276 career home runs in regular season play, including 17 this year.

Olson should be the hometown favorite but Buxton might also get some support since he grew up in Georgia. Per Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press, Buxton’s son is very excited to bring him a towel and Gatorade during the event. Buxton has 154 career home runs, including 21 so far in 2025.

Raleigh is having a monster season, with 38 home runs already in the bank. The record for most home runs in a season by a primary catcher is Salvador Perez with 48, so Raleigh is on pace to destroy that. Raleigh’s previous career high was his 34 homers last year, so he already eclipsed that before the break.

Chisholm spent some time on the IL but has 17 home runs in just 65 games this year. Cruz only has 16 this year but strikes out a lot while his Statcast data is off the charts, so perhaps his stuff will play up in the derby setting. Rooker hit 30 home runs in 2023, 39 last year and is up to 20 already this year. Caminero and Wood are each playing a full major league season for the first time. Caminero has 23 home runs and Wood 24.

Here are two polls for MLBTR readers, the first asking who you want to win the derby and the second asking who you think will win.

All that to say that, yes I’m a baseball fan. I look at the standings all the time, and really pay attention around free agency and trade deadline.., but wasn’t able to tell anyone who the big dumper was.

“Don’t care no more”..I know, right. I hit 22 homeruns in high school in 1999 and I dont even get a phone call about joining the home run derby?

This level of disrespect is astounding and MLB has completely forgotten about us never-were jocks who completely peaked out in high school.

Shot in the dark, Wood. Wide open class makes me lean towards the young guy with great raw power, but also not an extreme non-contact hitter who could tire himself out with bad swings. Wouldn’t be shocked to see anyone here win. Should be fun.

The game was taken from them because MLB didn’t agree with the policies the state of Georgia was doing, even though the braves themselves literally did nothing wrong

Colorado was much more aligned with MLB’s politics, so they moved it there

sad – You’re forgetting some key points though, most notably the fact MLB gave the game back to Atlanta this year despite NO CHANGES TO THE ELECTION LAWS SINCE 2021.

Manfred and MLB refuse to explain why the change of heart, because they know it was a horrific politically motivated decision to pull the game from Atlanta in 2021.

Worst of all, the horrific politically motivated decision punished the very same community which MLB claimed to be helping by making the horrific politically motivated decision.

Without question it was one of the darkest chapters in MLB history. The Braves winning the World Series that year was sweet vindication!

You know what’s funny is those same voting policies that Stacy Abrams got the MLB all worked up about still exist. So now the MLB is ok with it?….That’s my point nothing changed at all. It was just grandstanding for Liberals.

I would too Fever lol…But you’re right, it ultimately cost the community an estimated 100 million in revenue. And they moved to a predominantly white area. It made no sense at all. Stacy Abrams realized she screwed up so bad the Washington Post allowed her edit her own op-ed later claiming she never suggested the game be moved. Craziness.

Which was it darker than? Black Sox scandal? Steroids n BALCO? Biogenesis? The two sign stealing scandals in the 2010s? Much darker than the ongoing chapter of MiLB player exploitation (ya know… How most are paid less than min wage). Even darker than the 60-year owners’ conspiracy to “unofficially” ban black players?

Yep. A PR move gussied up as socially motivated that backfired (because it was just a PR move from the beginning) is absolutely in the same conversation as those……..

Dag – Are you not grasping what “one of” means?

Then why are you trying to compare to some other dark chapters?

Black Sox scandal impacted players/teams only.
          Same with steroids.
          Same with sign stealing.
Same with racism, which BTW reflected a racist country
Same with minor leaguers, who BTW are not exploited

Ripping away the ASG in 2021 was done BY THE COMMISSIONER ON BEHALF OF THE OWNERS.

The commissioner and office of MLB was not involved in your examples, but it was THE only person/entity involved in the horrific decision to foolishly try to “punish” conservatives …. with millions of people, ironically mostly democrats, sacrificed as “collateral damage”.

It differs greatly from all YOUR examples in that it didn’t harm any players at all. Instead it harmed an entire region to the tune of $100M according to many sources such as CNN.

          cnn.com/2021/04/03/us/mlb-all-star-game-relocation…

It harmed an already depressed and poverty-stricken region that was counting heavily on the business/revenue generated by all those ASG and draft events. Businesses and workers were already hurting from Covid, the ASG was supposed to be their lifeline. They made personal and business decisions with the expectation of the ASG happening back then.

My God, how can you be so unconcerned and uncaring about millions of people?

          Learn about empathy please.

          Get a conscious please.

I saw him in Durham early last season – I think that it was against the Yankees AAA team. Now, the defense is a work in progress and so is the overall hit tool, but he was a man among boys out there. He hit two HR (one that might still be in orbit) and the hardest hit ball all day was a double that should have gone through the fence.

If he can become an average defender and figure out the rest he is going to be something quite special. He is still quite young so there is plenty of time to adjust and grow.

It’s “couldn’t care less”. By saying you could care less, you are in fact saying that you care.

Pedantry aside, I’m also ambivalent to the ASG. Mainly because it’s not truly the best players that season that get in; it’s the best players from the first half of that season. I mean, if you’re hitting .300, have 30HRs and a bunch of walks in the first half but hit .180 with 2 HRs and a handful of walks, are you really the best player that season?

IMO, the ASG should be held after the regular season

We really have to be pedantic here?

Who will win the HRD? Any teams NOT participating, that’s who. Their players will be resting and not screwing up their swings or getting injured. Same goes for ASG. Bah humbug.
