Mets To Sign Matt Harvey

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 16, 2010 at 11:07pm CDT

The Mets agreed to sign Matt Harvey for a bit more than $2.5MM, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link). ESPN.com's Keith Law reports that Harvey gets $2.525MM (Twitter link). The 21-year-old sought a $4.5MM deal, according to Heyman (on Twitter).

Back in 2007, the Angels selected the right-hander in the third round. This year, the Mets drafted Harvey seventh overall. Last year, MLB recommended a $2.178MM bonus for the seventh-overall selection.

Thank God. I don’t even care if he’s gonna be a future reliever at least we have some semblance of a hot prospect.

Even with the seventh overall pick the Mets will be in the bottom five for spending on the draft again.

well that is b/c Omar is a “specialist” when it comes to international free agents so idealy they spend more there than the other teams.

Im curious to see how much they spend on young latin kids compared to other teams…

But they really don’t spend all that much more in the international free agent market. Omar will sign a few 300k-800k players but it is his ability to get players like meija for less than 50k. They are never involved in players like Sano and Inoa.

I know they don’t sign guys if they can’t prove their age. That maybe be why.

well the mets signed pretty much every one of their important picks so thats all that really matters in the long run.

Omar ( or his scouts ) has a pretty good eye for talent…Mejia…Davis…Thole…Niese…Pelfrey….Havens….Kirk…Famiglia…F. Martinez…if the mets stick with what appears to be a long-term plan….they will have a team full of young talent and a good kick-a*s manager in wally backman to guide them….
