Reds Acquire Willie Bloomquist

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 13, 2010 at 1:42pm CDT

The Reds acquired Willie Bloomquist from Kansas City for a player to be named later or cash, according to a Royals press release. The 32-year-old utility man has played all three outfield positions and all four infield positions this year, so the Reds are getting one of the more versatile players in the game. He hasn't hit much, however, and his season line now sits at .265/.296/.388.

Bloomquist hits free agency after the season, when his two-year $3.1MM contract expires. He won't be a ranked free agent, so the Royals aren't missing out on the chance to obtain draft pick compensation. Since Bloomquist was acquired in September, he will be ineligible for Cincinnati's postseason roster.

Its called depth people…why is everyone up in arms that the reds got a guy to provide some depth since they have trouble keeping outfielders healthy and I highly doubt he comes to Cincy and is responsible for losing them games like some people are suggesting.

Depth is great and all but I’d worry Dusty Baker will fall in love with him and give him more playing time than he deserves.

what does it matter he cant play for them in the post season, he was brought in to give the starting out fielders and starting infielders more days off between now and the post season chill out everyone

I am massively confused on your post mate. “Why is everyone up in arms that the reds got a guy to provide some depth” ok I’ll stop it there. This is only the 2nd post in the thread man. Who are all these people who are up in arms about this. I personally think it’s a decent move.

Seems like a pretty pointless thing to do. He won’t be eligible for the post season I assume so he’s basically a backup for the next few weeks. Given that he has negative value in general he’s not likely to help the Reds win any games here on out and could be responsible for them losing games. Just a pointless, pointless move. Jocketty must want to seem busy or something, like if the Reds fail miserably in the postseason he can talk about how he did all he could for the team.

Due to a lack of OF depth, the Reds started Miguel Cairo in RF the other day. This is a depth move only. Of greater concern is that they’ll have to move somebody off the 40 man roster, something they’ve been avoiding for the last 2 weeks.

Bruce is nursing a sore side, Edmonds is toast, Nix is recoving from an ankle. It’s a mash unit right now and they need warm bodies. Coincidentally, that is Willie’s best tool — warm body.

The reds have only 3 healthy outfielders on the team. He wasn’t acquired to win games, just to keep Miguel Cairo out of right field til Jay Bruce gets back from his not-oblique strain.

So even with expanded rosters they couldn’t bring someone up who is better at baseball than Bloomquist? They are wasting a player to be named later, no matter how useless that person might be, on someone who’s probably below replacement level no matter what position he plays. If they really needed help in the outfield that bad they should have just called up their best minor leaguer and been done with it.

their best minor leaguer is Wladimier Balentien, who has a career -0.3 WAR. the PTBNL will probably end up being cash or, at most, a 29 year old journeyman minor leaguer or something. unless we find out it’s an actual prospect, I don’t have a problem with this deal. you’d have to waive someone to get Balentien on the 40-man as well, so that’s not an issue. Bloomquist can play more positions – that alone is probably enough to make him a more valuable asset than Balentien.

Finding out who the PTBNL is will be easy. Just look at which hitters in the Reds’ system used to be a Brave or Mariner, find the one with lowest OBP, and that’s Dayton Moore’s guy.

I wouldn’t go that far. Bloomquist has speed, not bad at middle IF and maybe the Reds are interested in him as a FA in the off season anyway and want a 1st hand view for couple weeks. Can’t cost much and his speed is pretty good on the basepaths, 7 positions he has a glove for etc.. Better than Billy Hall in other words..

            Willie Bloomquist’s WAR: -0.7

            Bill Hall’s WAR: 0.8

Hall is no stud, but I’d have him over Bloomquist any day. And the fact that Bloomquist can play seven positions is completely irrelevant since he can’t play any of them well. Same goes for his speed since he’s never on base.

@pag… Your correct about Bloomquist not winning the Reds many games. You are wrong about him losing games for the reds. He will provide good relief on defense for many positions.

Willie Bloomquist is a serviceable veteran who will not be intimidated by being in a pennant race, and is nothing more than a band-aid for the rest of the season until Reds are at full strenth in the outfield. He will be a free agent after this year and you’ll probabley see him starting in the outfield for the Cubs next year, although he is a Miguel Cairo kind of player who can play fairly well almost anywhere.

Reds now have a 4th healthy outfielder, and decent PR. Reds had no outfielders on the 40-man who could be brought up. Just a good depth move to make it through September.

Correction: players must be on a team’s roster to be eligible for postseason unless there’s an injury during the postseason

Cant teams sidestep that rule by bringing an injured player on the downlow into the playoffs, have him “officially” get injured during the first game, then bring up anyone they want?

It’s a depth move, that’s all. BTW Bruce is in the starting lineup tonight and Edmonds and Nix are taking Batting Practice. Good signs.

Nix is probably at least a week away yet. They are saying he is having issues running still. Edmonds might be back this week. Hope not of all the dumb moves the Reds made this year Edmonds was it.
