Odds & Ends: Loux, Burrell, Dodgers, Trout

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 8, 2010 at 2:53pm CDT

On this date six years ago, the Rangers lost Colby Lewis when the Tigers claimed him on waivers. Texas signed Lewis last offseason and the right-hander will take the hill tomorrow as he and the Rangers try to put away the Rays. Here are today's links…

  • The Astros are no longer pursuing free agent pitching prospect Barret Loux, GM Ed Wade told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. The Marlins, Rangers, Cubs, Twins, Giants, Brewers, Phillies and Mariners have also scouted the 2010 first rounder.
  • Padres CEO Jeff Moorad and GM Jed Hoyer told Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune that they wish the team had pursued Pat Burrell more aggressively early in the season.
  • Dodgers president Dennis Mannion will leave the organization and owner Frank McCourt will take on a more active role with the team, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.
  • A scout told Jim Callis of Baseball America that comparisons between Mike Trout and Mickey Mantle are "actually pretty good." Trout, one of the game's top prospects, probably hasn't heard that one before (Twitter link).
  • Indians GM Chris Antonetti promoted several members of his front office, as Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

wow, trout and mantle; no pressure there at all. wonder if its the same guy who said Rocco Baldelli was the next Joe Dimaggio, or Brad Komminsk was the next Dale Murphy? just let the kid be the 1st MIKE TROUT.

I hate when people say that this player’s going to be the next so and so. Just let them be their own player because everyone is different.

Last player I remember being compared to Mickey Mantle was Ruben Rivera. Yea, that worked out.

Per the Burrell note, talk about hindsight being 20/20. In other news, Moorad believes that the Padres should’ve found a way to pry Jose Bautista away from the Blue Jays in the offseason as well.

I totally agree with you White Angus. It is okay to compare similar players when one of them is an unknown but it is disrespectful to the HoF’er and puts to much pressure on the prospect when so-called experts to make these asinine predictions.

In other words, there is a big difference in saying he has a similar skill set as Mickey Mantle and saying he will be Mickey Mantle.

      Agree.
Comparing him to Mantle is not fair for either side, especially for the Hall of Famer.

I think Mannion had as much power with the Dodgers as Gabe does with Dunder-Mifflin-Sabre.

NOBODY has ever had a skill set like Mantle. Before his knee injury he was one of the fastest men ever clocked to 1B and could hit the ball 550+ft with worse technology than today. And he played CF extremely well. That’s like the power of Mcgwire on roids, the speed of Rickey Henderson, and the defense of Andruw Jones/Willie Mays etc etc. Not to mention a switch hitter. He is arguably the most talented baseball player to ever live. Why even say such ridiculous hyperbole? The real debate is the pressure it creates equal the the disrespect shown to Mantle? Mantle might not have been the greatest player because of injuries/alcohol etc but his skill set is untouched. That scout must have wanted his name heard.

You must have not read Trout’s scouting report. He is an absolute freak. While he has a lot of major league games left to be “The Mick.” The dude is a speed demon, a “plus plus” center fielder, huge power, a bizzarely humble guy with a strong work ethic. I dont remember the last time the scouts went from hes OK to the best ever so unanimously and quickly on one prospect.

ok, huge power and a speed demon does not equal: switch hitter with possibly the most raw power of all time and one of the fastest of all time. Not to mention the guy has never even seen a MLB pitch…how many guys with can’t miss tools end up being busts? And how many times do they end up being Mickey Mantle? It’s irresponsible and just downright stupid.

What’s he’s saying is: he has the tools of Mantle. Results and potential(or tools) are two different things. Mantle was one of the greatest all around players ever, scouts say that Trout has the potential to be great all around.

        That’s not really the point.

I have no problem if scouts predict him to be a 30/30 guy with plus defense- you don’t compare him to Mantle, you juts don’t.

Thats not fair to do to a young guy like Trout. No matter what kid, if you aren’t as good as The Mick, you will be a disappointment.

There is no way anyone should ever be compared to legends of the game until they are breaking their records, but even then, it is still a ridiculous statement. There will never be another Ruth, Mays, Mantle, Kolfax, Marichal, ect.

From what I remember, Barret Loux was connected to the Marlins back in the draft. That would be awesome if they could sign him.

It’s not a good omen for Loux when he gets passed up by his hometown Astros, who have a decent amount of financial flexibility now and a definite need for power arms. To me, that means either the medical concerns of the Diamondbacks are quite valid, or Loux’s handlers aren’t permitting potential suitors from administering a thorough battery of imaging tests to rule out those concerns. If that is indeed the case, Loux might be lucky to get $200K from any club.

Hope the Brewers are looking seriously at Barret Loux if healthy. They should have money because they didn’t sign there #1 pick and have a lot of money coming off the books and they wouldn’t loose anything picks or players. Go get him!!!!
