White Sox Favored To Sign Will Ohman, Are “Close”

By Mark Polishuk | January 7, 2011 at 5:25pm CDT

The White Sox are the favorites to sign left-hander Will Ohman, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.  Ohman hasn't yet made a decision, but is "close."  Ohman had drawn some interest from the Orioles (among other clubs) this winter, but Connolly reports that the O's are not one of the three AL finalists for Ohman's services.

Would LOVE this. Not because Ohman is that great, although he is decent enough, but being that he is a lefty may mean that Sale will no longer be needed in the pen, and can start to stretch his arm out in AAA as a starter. Woo!

could mean sale is the closer or that sale goes right into the rotation untill peavy comes back and proves he is back thus allowing a trade of floyd, jackson, or buehrle allowing sale to continue as a starter, or move back to swing man

I actually read it the opposite way – he’s the classic LOOGY & Thornton is the alpha lefty. Don’t see Santos or Crain closing so the only one left to do so is Sale (at least in the short run). 7/31 may present a trade opportunity for an experienced closer, assuming the Sox are in contention but Sale certainly proved capable of closing last year.

Nor do I necessarily with Thornton but he is so devastating to divisional lefties Mauer, Choo, Sizemore, Morneau et al that he’s hugely valuable as THE setup man. Crain has to show me a lot more to be the closer,

That’s definitely true especially with all the FA closers available next offseason. Teams could be looking to get some compensation for these guys. Many are up in age so they could be a nice bandaid until next year. I personally don’t like Thornton closing, he has too much value as a set up man and may not have that closers mentality. I cite that Twins game as the reason why he shouldn’t close, even though Thome had the edge.

News Flash….Sales will NOT BE in triple AAA, at least not at the start …only if he fails will he end up there.

No he will not be in triple AAA or AAAAAAAAA but he could be in AAA if his string training suggests he is not ready to start, or if they want to ease him in to pro starting. Remember, he was only 22, they should be careful

The White Sox don’t have enough $$ to sign Soriano. Besides, their bullpen is looking great with the signing of Crain, and now possibly Ohman. Plus, Chris sale is young with a + fastball with tremendous upside..Not to mention Thornton

he is good yes but he wants to close and doubt that will happen with the sox plus he is pretty shaky and had a rough season before going to the twins. plus he wants closers money for being at best a set up man but most likely a lefty specialist

He was shut down for the Braves in 2008. Hopefully he can return to that form.

we would all rather have soriano but the simple fact is unless one of our starters is traded to clear money there isnt enough for him. And right now with not knowing fully when peavy will be back trading a starter is a bad move. Same goes with fuentes, he wants to close and I’m going to guess that the closers job is up to either santos, thornton or sale. Ohman is being brought in to be a basic lefty guy which means get a lefty guy out and maybe stretch it to a full inning consider this he has a career whip vs leftys of 1.18 and a 10.03 k/9 vs lefties so he is the lefty we were missing into the pen moving thornton to either setup or closer and sale as the 5th starter untill peavy comes back then either down to AAA to stay as a starter for next year or move into the pen as the swing man….or wait till peavy comes back trade a starter to clear up cash and slot sale into the rotation.

They’re good enough to compete for the division, but I think they’re lacking something. They are a really good player away from being a title contender (and I’m not saying this as if it’s easy to acquire a star every day, just stating a fact)

The White Sox now are a very strong contender for the World Series championship.
Their starting line up looks dangerous.

I favor leaving Thornton as a set up man because in the 7th or 8th inning when
the team needs a strike out or two to put down a dangerous rally by the opposing team (winning or losing by one or two runs) he will be the man!

I really think Sales could be a fantastic closer. He looks like the Jenks of 2005 (not in body size) The Sox could go with a 4 man rotation in April. 5th stater? Peavy coming back as he was in his All Star year is very questionable. We won’t know until June-July at the earliest and that is no guarantee.

Is Sales that necessary to have in the rotation? Does he show he can be a future star as a starter?

He seems to have that ability right now as a closer!
