Quick Hits: Millwood, Furcal, Drese, Varitek, Young

By Steve Adams | February 20, 2011 at 10:06pm CDT

Some links to sift through on a slow Sunday evening…

  • Kevin Millwood is working out and throwing simulated games at agent Scott Boras' training facility according to MLB.com's Peter Gammons (on Twitter). He says the righty is "waiting for the right widespread panic," similar to Kyle Lohse prior to the 2008 season. Earlier today we learned that Millwood rejected a minor league offer from the Yankees.
  • Rafael Furcal isn't thinking about the $12MM option in his contract, writes Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times. Yesterday we found out that the option can automatically vest with 600 plate appearances this season.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tells the story of Ryan Drese, who is attempting a comeback with the Orioles this year.
  • Having embraced his role as a backup, Jason Varitek wants to play into his 40s, writes MLB.com's Ian Browne. Varitek will turn 39 on April 11 this season.
  • If Michael Young had to choose a villain in the ongoing saga of his trade request, it's best that he chose Jon Daniels, writes Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.
  • Jon Paul Morosi takes a look at the communication issues that led us to where we stand now in regards to the Young situation.
  • This will be Dustin McGowan's last attempt at a comeback, writes John Lott of the Ottawa Citizen. McGowan has undergone two shoulder surgeries and a knee surgery since 2008, and says he won't endure another shoulder surgery if the injury barks up again.

What a road for McGowan it has been.

Always had great stuff to be a stud in the majors, just didn’t have confidence.

It finally came together in 07, but these injuries have really slowed him down.

slowed is an understatement, could be his last chance to have a career in baseball, im pulling for him tho , even for a bullpen roll.

Does he know its pretty much impossible to make 400K other than at least attempting to play mlb? Youd think hed at least try rather than pack it in.

Geez, the media are just hoping Young does to JD what Shawn Chacon did to Ed Wade.

“I’d love to walk in and hug everyone every day,” Daniels said.

Yeah, might not go over so well in a locker room, Jon.

What’s all this about Michael Young? I don’t think I’ve heard anything about him lately.

In the most recent Michale Young news, he met a three year old that cried on a video (thats on youtube) when his mother told him he wont be playing for Texas anymore.

All this talking about Michael Young and the Rangers, and people have yet to realize that if you would stop making all theses comments, posts, blogs etc. about it all it wouldn’t be as open and both the Rangers and Young can put it behind them quicker. But I guess that’s what sport writers are supposed to do, continue talking about a topic that needs to be left alone for the sake of an organization or player.

You think any of the writers have a genuine interest in a team or a players vs a story?

Insert rants about East Coast Bias, ESPN is a yankees biased, ESPN is a Red Sox biased, etc.

Speaking of villains, Danny Knobler sort of looks like The Penguin’s mentally retarded cousin.

Not to mention lack of range at any position he would have value at (SS,2B) where most teams would want him for.

Okay, I’m rooting for Ryan Drese. TWO TJ surgeries! You have TJ surgery and your arm doesn’t feel like your arm for a long time – it takes what, 12 to 18 months before your arm can pretend that a tendon is a ligament, a grueling trip through rehab land, and Drese has done it twice? And he still has a chance at a career?

Oh, Baseball Gods, let this guy get one last chance in the bigs. I reckon he’s earned it.

Hong-Chih Kuo still has a career. And a very good one.
I totally agree with your post though

Kuo is one of my favorite pitchers to watch. I like relief pitchers that are unhittable. It’s great that he was able to make it back. Fingers crossed for Mr. Drese and hope he can do the same.

Contract year or not… I’m still rooting for Furcal to have a big year. Dee Gordon might be waiting in the wings, but he can move over to 2B if it means we can keep Raffy around.
