D’Backs Extend Towers, Gibson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 3, 2011 at 3:15pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have rewarded GM Kevin Towers and manager Kirk Gibson for a successful 2011 season, signing the pair to new contracts. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that Towers and Gibson are both signed through 2014 with team options for 2015-16. Towers had been signed through 2012 with two two-year options, while Gibson had been signed through 2013.

MLBTR's Transaction Tracker offers a complete look back at Towers' moves. He rebuilt the team's bullpen and bench last offseason and it appears that he will focus on second base and adding depth this offseason. The D'Backs won the National League West this year, Gibson's first full season. Arizona posted a 94-68 regular season record before losing to the Brewers in the Division Series.

Good looks D-backs. Not trying to state the obvious but they look like they have a pretty good direction with a very talented young core and now have two of the people that helped them get to the playoffs this year locked up for a few more years.

hope we can lock up xavier nady for another year plus a mutual option…in fact, multi-year contracts for everybody over 30 except ryan roberts, just not sure he can play…

…maybe miranda can get a real shot at 1B next season.

I love it… locking up the leaders of this amazing turnaround! Should be a successful team for years to come.. stacked minors system, lots of our young players are under control for a while too. Can’t wait. Go DBacks!

Now they’ll really be good if they sign Reyes, Pujols, move to the AL, sign Fielder, Wilson.  That’d be a good start.

Yes. Reyes as SS, Pujols at 3B, Fielder at 1B (or Pujols at 1B and Fielder DH, you know). Wilson at the back end of their stud-filled rotation. That would be scary…but also so, so unlikely! It’s fun to think about though.

I like thinking about signing Pujols to play 3B for the Tigers on occasion. Can you imagine having Pujols and Cabrera in the same lineup every day?
