Quick Hits: Dodgers, Feliz, Nathan, Rangers, Indians

By Zachary Links | November 26, 2011 at 11:14pm CDT

On this day fifteen years ago, the Angels traded first baseman J.T. Snow to the Giants for Fausto Macey and Allen Watson.  Snow would go on to play nine seasons with San Francisco with a slash line of .273/.369/.438.  Here are some links for Saturday night..

  • Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has a thing for acquiring journeyman relievers in the offseason and will probably do the same this winter, but he does have a proven arm in Blake Hawksworth, writes Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times.  The 29-year-old is entering his final year under team control.
  • Peter Gammons of MLB.com writes that the Rangers' signing of Joe Nathan puts Neftali Feliz in his rightful place, the starting rotation.  Texas might have overpaid for Nathan, but waiting to get the veteran at a bargain could have resulted in having to turn to a different free agent closer who would require a longer deal.
  • Teams are still trying to digest all the details of the new collective bargaining agreement, writes Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer.  The CBA will change the way the Indians do business as they have spent a good amount on the draft and on international free agents in recent years.
  • With the owners and players coming to terms on a five-year labor agreement, it's apparent that the two sides learned some important lessons from the 1994 work stoppage, writes Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com.  Ringolsby also weighs in on the changes to the amateur draft and points out that the new agreement takes leverage away from agents and provides a boost for college baseball.

Regarding the new CBA; there is a new “lottery: for draft choices after the first round for the 10 clubs with the lowest revenues and the 10 clubs from the smallest
markets.  Does anyone have info on who these teams are?

Are the smallest markets based on population, media, or what?

The lowest revenues seem straight forward but that data does not always get to the public.

I bet you the Mets will qualify for one of those new low revenue draft picks.

Rangers “might have” overpaid? $14.5M for a 37-year old with Tommy John surgery in 2010?  Coulda just put Mike Adams in the closer’s role and then spent money on a middle reliever.

Yes, because good middle relievers grow on trees and are a sure thing. Moving Adams to closer weakens two spots as he is head and shoulders above everybody else as far as a set up guy and he is not a sure thing as a closer.  If Nathan continues to return to form as he did in the last half of this year, then he is definitely worth it. He had the most saves (246) and best ERA (1.87) for a closer from ’04 – ’09, his first 6 years as a closer, better than Mariano (243, 1.90). Tommy John surgery usually results in the player coming back stronger and if the last half of this year is any indication, he is back. From July on this year he had an opponents’ slash of .193/.239/.367 saving 11 of 12. He had 28 K’s with 21 hits scattered over 29.1 innings of work and will now have a better defense behind him. He also only had 5 walks during this time. He is also a veteran that has been there before and wanted to be here and be the veteran guy in the bullpen. Leadership is a necessity and he is another strong leader in a great clubhouse. I think it was money well spent. Better than Papelbon at 12.5mm per.

Lol, you just used a 29.1 IP sample size to justify a $14.5M deal. I rest my case.

No. I used the fact that he was the best closer before he got injured and that players after tj surgery rebound to be as good if not better after two years. The last half of the year supported the fact that he is rounding back into the form that made him the most effective reliever from 04-09.

I admit that I might pursue Fielder over Darvish if the Rangers feel their rotation is set. Fielder would have to be put on a strict diet/workout regimen to keep him from turning into Carlos Lee. If Josh is re-signed

Maybe in the future, he’s still developing. He needs to refine his off speed pitches, learn how to pace himself, and prove he can throw 200 MLB innings in the heat of a Texas summer.

FWIW….JT’s daddy played WR for ND and had a productive career with the L.A. Rams back in the day.

Does the name Jack Snow ring a bell ?

now we just need the reds to put chapman in their rotation and we can end this fallacy that a closer has anywhere near the value of a starter.

    How about a trade with the Red Sox—you beat us up pretty badly in the Eric Gagne trade;

Ellsbury for Neftali for starters–just to see if there’s interest–then perhaps discuss prospects. OR    Ells for Harrison + prospects. Or you make a suggestion.

Ideal trade–Ells for Harden and Bourjos.

you do know Rich Harden is with the A’s and Peter Bourjos the Angels, right?

so the Rangers would get Ells and the A’s lose Harden and the
Angels lose Bourjos? I am all for that trade!!!!!

baschkar and oz10—I’m sorry I  meant Dan Haren and Peter Bourjos of the Angels for Ellsbury and a prospect.

We returned the favor when we practically gave you Saltallamachia for nothing and you turned him around to be a good player. If we resigned CJ, and only if, I would trade Harrison straight up for Ells but nothing added on.
