Cody Ross Decision Expected Today

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 23, 2012 at 6:56pm CDT

6:56pm: The Red Sox have "made some progress" with Ross, a team source tells Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe (Twitter link).

4:33pm: It sounds like Ross will probably end up with the Red Sox, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com tweets. Rubin suggests the Mets didn't want to spend more than $1MM.

3:59pm: The Braves aren't among the finalists for Ross, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweets.

2:56pm: Free agent outfielder Cody Ross is expected to pick a team by the end of the day, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News tweets. The Red Sox are having an ongoing dialogue with Ross, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick tweets.

The Mets also have some interest in the free agent outfielder, but the Red Sox can offer more money and a hitter-friendly home park, according to Baggarly. The Mets aren't sure Ross fits for them, so the Red Sox and others are more likely fits, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets.

Ross, 31, posted a .240/.325/.405 line with 14 home runs in 461 plate appearances for the Giants in 2011, while playing all three outfield positions. The SFX client has a career .282/.349/.563 line against left-handed pitching. Ross won the NLCS MVP in 2010, when he hit three homers against the Phillies. The Braves and Rockies have also been linked to Ross this winter.

Ross would be a super nice fit for the Braves.  I’m not sure what the FO is waiting on but they really need a back-up CF.  This has been a dreadful offseason for the Braves.

i wouldn’t say dreadful. Boring? Yes, but not dreadful. What else did we need besides a backup shortstop?

Exactly. It’s just been boring because so much has gone on in the NL East. We didn’t need anything except things we can’t change (Heyward slumping, Uggla slumping, injuries) with new players.

        • michael hughes

Personally, I would have liked to see Jurjjens traded. I’m very concerned about his injury history, his decline in velocity, and his ability to replicate last year’s performance. Our farm system needs a serious re-stocking when it comes to hitting prospects, and after 2012 we’ll likely have at least three big holes in the line-up at CF, SS, and 3B. If Prado does bounce back then we can assume he fills the hole at 3B but that just opens a new hole in LF, if he doesn’t bounce back you add LF to our needs along with 3B.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to trade Jurjjens just to trade him, if the return isn’t strong then we need to take a chance on him. Also, all the reported trade opportunities were horrible and I’m glad we didn’t do them, but I would’ve liked to see something done.

        • NYBravosFan10

I’m assuming you aren’t a farm system/minor leagues specialist (nerd?) like me? We actually have some good talent at shortstop and 3rd in the minors. None are ready except Pastornicky but the wave is coming.

        • michael hughes

You assume incorrectly. I’m guessing you’re talking about salcedo and Andrelton Simmons? Salcedo put up extremely disappointing numbers this year and simmons looks to be a glove specialist. The biggest problem is a lack of depth as insurance if neither work out, which isn’t unlikely, neither are top 100 prospects and both have large flaws to their game.

        • NYBravosFan10

yes that is who I’m talking about. You could put Terdoslavich and Lipka in there as well.

        • Jeff

Isn’t Lipka a CF now?  Terdo I got a feeling will end up a LF, or a AAAA player, but he has a chance.

If he can play 3B that’s a plus, but I’m not sold yet.

        • michael hughes

Yeah, Lipka got moved to CF mostly because they don’t have a single impact prospect at that position even though Bourn will be gone in 2013. Lipka’s still pretty far from the majors and probably won’t be ready by the time Bourn’s gone anyway.

Love what he did for the San Francisco Giants by leading the way for their 1st World Series win out west.

But seriously!? We need a headline that says Cody Ross will be making a decision on what team he chooses? He’s not Albert Puljos or anything.

Then again I suppose it’s a better headline and rumor than, “Prince Fielder Eats a Vegetarian Jumbaco”

I think he deserves and should get 2 years/$9MM with a $1MM buy out and an option for $5MM. I have no clue who will signed him, but this is what I think he’s worth. A lot of people think he isn’t worth much but if you look at his overall numbers the last few years, comparable players get deals of an equivalent value.

Playing time. If he’s not getting the 3-year deal that he previously wanted, he could take a one-year deal, play with some consistency and get the multi-year deal he wants next season. However, I’m not sure how much his stock can rise.

Even with Crawford missing a little time to begin the season I think we should just give the two spots to a combo of McDonald/Lin/Sweeny. We don’t really need that expensive of a platoon partner for Sweeny. Lin is a patient bat and has got a nice arm and D in center field so I think he could def handle any OF spot. Just split McDonald/Lin between left field and right field when its a lefty. Then when Carl is back we can keep the best of the two on as our platoon/4th OF guy. Offense is gonna be deadly either way so sign Oswalt already so we can be done.

So Red Sox fans who would you guys give up for Garza after the compensation has been settled? Or maybe the compensation could be the Cubs paying most of his contract.

Taking the compensation in to account, I would be OK with the Sox offering something like Ranaudo/Doubront/some other prospect. I would say Iglesias is probably untouchable now with our shortstop situation and I’m not sure the Sox would be willing to part with two of Ranaudo/Middlebrooks/Lavaranway in any deal. Maybe if it was Ranaudo/Lavaranway for Garza/compensation..or perhaps they could get Byrd involved too.

I’d let the Cubs assume the responsibility for paying Carl Crawford and John Lackey. Oh, I wouldn’t TRADE either player to Chicago. I’d say that in exchange for Garza, the Cubs get the privilege and honor of cutting the checks to Crawford and Lackey. They’ll still suit up for the Bosox, of course.

I am scratching my head here. While Cody Ross can play all outfield positions, he doesn’t have the Arm to play right field, I am assuming that where’s they (Red Sox) are going to play him. Also, the Red Sox hurt their defense up the middle by trading Scutaro to clear payroll for Ross. Usually, not a good idea. Is Cherington drunk? As for my Orioles, they haven’t really done anything this offseason except provide a lot propaganda to the fans. It’s looking more and more I am off to the Cactus League for the 2012 Spring Training. I really need to know how the other side lives! Because, it ain’t happening in Sarasota this year!
