Latest On Roy Oswalt

By Tim Dierkes | January 30, 2012 at 5:47pm CDT

Free agent righty Roy Oswalt is scheduled to meet with the Rangers today, we learned last week from Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News.  The latest on the three-time All-Star:

  • The sides had a "good," exploratory meeting, Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com reports.
  • The Rangers met with Oswalt and the situation is ongoing and unresolved, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan tweets.
  • Oswalt let the Indians and Blue Jays know he has no interest, tweets Peter Gammons of MLB Network.  Oswalt clearly wants the Rangers or Cardinals, writes Gammons.  Gammons' tweet does not reference the Red Sox, who reportedly made an offer last week.  The Red Sox have not considered themselves out of the hunt, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.  Oswalt's agent Bob Garber told me on Saturday his client has no chance of landing in a bullpen, so if the Rangers or Cardinals sign him, a corresponding move will be necessary.

“Not about the money” (which I never actually uttered) is not equivalent to “couldn’t care less about the money.”  If Oswalt is in a position where he is content to retire if he can’t sign with a handful of preferred teams, which it certainly seems like he is, he is probably also in a position where he is content to retire if the money the teams offer isn’t something he considers worth it.

As far as “shutting his pie hole,” I don’t believe you have actually heard him speak about the issue.  If you object to the coverage, maybe you should take it up with the newspaper writers and TV sportscasters or find a website that isn’t dedicated to reporting it.

Oswalt was and is one of the most underrated pitchers in the MLB. Dude was stellar with the stros. Unfortunely since he played in Houston everybody downplayed how solid he really was(all Astros played are made out to be terrible).

On the brightside, I feel a little less lame paying attention to the “Where will Oswalt sign ?” thread than I did the “Where will Cody Ross sign ?” thread last week.

It definitely alleviates the rash of “mystery team” signings that have plagued this off season.

Yes! They are the 07 Super Bowl Champs cuz they won. I’m not a hypocrite. It’s part of the beauty of sports. Only the winner can lay a legitimate claim to being the best!

It’s not surprising that Berkman would say that about the Rangers.  He’s still an Astros fan at heart(he grew up in Houston and was an Astros fan before he was an Astros player), and most Astros fans dislike the Rangers.

At the beginning of this offseason, Berkman was doing a press conference and used the word “we” in referring to the Astros(he was being asked about the move to the AL).  People assumed he had a slip of the tongue, but I don’t think it was a slip-up.  I think he was using the term “we” the same way fans use it.  i.e. a Cardinals fan may say “we won the world series last year” even though he didn’t actually play on the team.

“The Rangers would be smart to get him if only because of his former head
of the rotation status with Houston, they need a leader and the fact
that he has pitched in the Lone Start state would help too(I have heard
the climates are not exactly similar between Houston and Arlington but
    close enough)”

The climates are similar.  But the Astros have a roof which is closed on exceptionally hot days.

but oswalt’s back is not the same thing as an egg. it can heal, like a most injuries. the analogy, though clever, is not applicable. you and i don’t know squat compared to these teams and their doctors. besides, oswalt’s lower price reflects the injury risk. no way you get a guy like oswalt for $10M otherwise

7 turned into Jays wins… I also didnt say that they would magically not have a blown save this year and I didnt say… i said expect an extra 12-15 wins.. on top of everyone improving with an extra year of play… not just on fixing the blown saves alone…
