Dodgers Claim Matt Angle

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 23, 2012 at 12:23pm CDT

The Dodgers have claimed outfielder Matt Angle off of waivers, Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com tweets. The Dodgers confirmed the news, noting that they moved Rubby De La Rosa to the 60-day DL in a corresponding move (Twitter link). The Orioles designated Angle for assignment to create roster space for Luis Ayala approximately two weeks ago.

Angle debuted with the 2011 Orioles, playing all three outfield positions, and posting a .559 OPS in 95 plate appearances. The 26-year-old spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a .271/.347/.344 line in 489 plate appearances. He hit his first big league home run off of Justin Verlander in Detroit as the right-hander attempted to win his 25th game of the season.

A 56 OPS+ in limited time? The Dodgers should’ve claimed Kurt Angle. He could probably muster a 57 OPS+ with a broken freakin’ neck.

I think the Dodgers made the “right” move. I love geometry jokes.

I disagree.  I think this is a very obtuse move.

It will be the subject of protracted debate.

Not to get off on a tangent here, but…

Edit: Dang! I should have read further down before posting.

No matter how little this guy amounts to, he can still say he hit his first MLB homer off Verlander. That’s pretty sweet.

Oh brother to all the “Angle” Jokes.

Anyway, this is very interesting. The Dodgers now have two thirds of our (Orioles) AAA outfield from ’11. Tyler Henson from the beautifully executed Eveland trade and now Angle from the waiver wire. Should be interesting competition for the 4th outfielder in Dodgerland for 2012.

PS I like Henson for an outside shot at the starting LF’er position. I really do.

You can make “acute” comment too. I’m on fire this afternoon!

That’s some line. So what’s your point? You seem to have gone off on a tangent.

      Ned Colletti, is that you?

Henson had a .313 OBP in AAA for crying out loud.  Neither he or Angle are competing for anything but a job in Albuquerque.

Dodgers have a pretty strong outfield w/ Ethier, Sands, Gwnn, and Rivera there to support Kemp in CF. Can’t imagine there’s much room for competition in a 4th spot.
