Athletics Designate Rich Thompson For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | April 25, 2012 at 11:42am CDT

The Athletics have designated Rich Thompson for assignment, the team announced. The move creates room on the 40-man roster for Jim Miller, who was recalled from Triple-A.

Thompson, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Angels last week. He faced three batters during his brief time with Oakland, allowing a single in between two outs. The Angels designated the Australian-born right-hander for assignment after he allowed four runs in his first 2 1/3 innings of the season. Thompson pitched to a 3.00 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 54 innings last season and is out of options, meaning he can't be sent to the minors without first clearing waivers.

Can the Angels claim him again and assign him to the minors?

Yes, but then they need to DFA him, clear waivers, and accept his assignment. I believe though he has to accept since it would be the first time he would be outrighted…

How is Luke Hughes not already gone, also? They should DFA him and recall Rosales, post-haste.

I think A’s are hoping he clear waivers, so they can stash him at Triple A…

He should team up with doyers above.  Look out Keith Law, there are some new sheriffs in town.

Highly doubt this guy is clearing waivers. The Athletics got him because they had priority, but I’m sure 3 or 4 teams also put claims. I am a Phils fan, and I believe that after putting Stutes on the DL, we are desperate for a reliever. So we’ll definitelty put in a claim. Will we get him? probably not, because any of the other 28 teams all have priority over us.
