Draft Notes: Cubs, Gausman, Orioles, Rockies

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 30, 2012 at 12:09pm CDT

Here are some notes on this year's amateur draft, which is now less than a week away…

  • The Cubs will hold a workout for shortstop prospect Carlos Correa at Wrigley Field today, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports. The Cubs select sixth overall in Monday's draft.
  • Jim Callis of Baseball America previewed the Orioles' draft with MASNsports.com's Steve Melewski, explaining why he expects Baltimore to select a college pitcher such as LSU's Kevin Gausman. The Orioles select fourth overall.
  • Jonathan Mayo introduces his readers to Gausman in a piece at MLB.com.
  • Conor Glassey of Baseball America lists ten future scouting directors, including Rockies assistant scouting director Danny Montgomery.

So what measurements are these people using to rate a Rockies asst scouting director #1 in any poll? I mean, look at the results of their past 10+ drafts, their failures in trades, even their bad internal scouting (Atkins, Hawpe, Cook, Francis, Morales, Rogers, Stewart, Chacin to name a handful of recent failures to move players).

Epstein won’t overlook taking a talented pitcher in rounds 1-2 can be pretty sure. Was looking over Sox prospects today and read something that made sense and confirmed a thought I also had.. With the new restrictive salary caps.. Many players who should be off of the boards up high are going to slide down a lot. I would/can see Epstein snapping up, probably a JC/HS talent pitcher at least in round 2 is a guess for the pitching starved Cubbies.

This might be one of the more interesting draft days in awhile. Day 2 is going to be fun to watch also for those who have the MLB package. They really should have day 2 for free as well. Seasons like this, when there has been so much change in the rules can expect to see players possibly not with a grip on reality of the non existent bonuses teams will be paying and those sliding way down.
