Orioles Designate Brad Bergesen For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | May 12, 2012 at 5:24pm CDT

The Orioles have designated Brad Bergesen for assignment, reports Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun (on Twitter). The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Bill Hall, who was called up from Triple-A.

Bergesen, 26, had pitched to a 5.13 ERA with 4.6 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 for the team's Triple-A affiliate this season. He's made 59 starts and 24 relief appearances for the Orioles over the last three seasons and owns a 4.68 ERA in 394 1/3 career innings. Bergesen appears to be a candidate for a waiver claim given his age, flexibility, and the fact that he has a minor league option remaining.

While Bergeson has been ineffective for Baltimore for quite some time, I will miss him. Good guy. Shame someone might get him for nothing and we get a couple weeks of Billiam Hall and his batting line that resembles a pitchers.

I agree with Mike Jones.  This is regrettable; I wish Bergy well and I expect he will surface in the majors again once he has a change of scenery.

I like how this sends a strong message to current young Os pitchers.

It’s about performance and accountability, not just people constantly doing lip service to it. To young Os pitchers who were given long leashes before Showalter and Duquette because of the org’s need for pitching, they realize that no one is safe from losing their job. To pitchers not on the old “Safe” list but performing well, it says that if they perform well, anyone will get a shot.

Why is Ronny Paulino still on their 40 man roster?

Its a shame that the Orioles are attempting to release him.  I think a change of scenery may work out for him.  It would be nice to get some sort of prospect in return.  He showed good flashes until he got beaned by a batted ball and was never the same.  I hope that he goes to the National League so that he does not come back to haunt the Orioles.

He was a solid SP until he got that freak injury doing the TV Commercial.
