Bergesen, 27, pitched 29 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks this past season, posting a 3.64 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9. He would have been arbitration eligible for the second time, but had been a non-tender candidate with a projected salary of $1MM.

Diamondbacks Claim Brad Bergesen

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 20, 2012 at 1:12pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have claimed Brad Bergesen, Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus tweets. The Orioles called Bergesen up earlier this week, but designated him for assignment without having him pitch in a game.

Bergesen, 26, had posted a 4.03 ERA with 4.6 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 80 1/3 innings at Triple-A before getting promoted. He posted a 5.70 ERA with 5.4 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 101 innings a year ago, when the Orioles used him in a hybrid role as a starter and reliever. The Diamondbacks had an empty 40-man roster spot going into the day.

Orioles Designate Brad Bergesen For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 18, 2012 at 3:42pm CDT

The Orioles designated right-hander Brad Bergesen for assignment to create roster space for Tommy Hunter, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports (Twitter links). The Orioles, who confirmed the roster move, added Bergesen to the 40-man roster yesterday, but didn't call on him to pitch.

By Mike Axisa | May 17, 2012 at 5:19pm CDT

Let’s keep track of the day’s outright assignments right here…

  • The Orioles have outrighted Brad Bergesen to Triple-A, reports Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. The 26-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment last weekend after pitching to a 5.13 ERA with 4.6 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 33 1/3 innings for Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate this season.

AL East Notes: Bergesen, Wakefield, Youkilis

By Mark Polishuk | May 15, 2012 at 6:57pm CDT

The injury bug continues to bite notable AL East players.  The Yankees put closer David Robertson on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique, while Rays starter Jeff Niemann will miss the next 4-6 weeks after suffering a broken fibula during last night's game in Toronto.  Rafael Soriano will take over as New York's new closer while the Rays will call up either Alex Cobb or Chris Archer to take Niemann's spot in the rotation.

Here's some other news from around the division…

  • The Orioles haven't put Brad Bergesen on waivers since they're still trying to trade the right-hander, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.  The O's designated Bergesen for assignment on Saturday.
  • "The fire to compete is still there," Tim Wakefield tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link), but while retirement is "difficult," the knuckleballer said he's enjoying spending time with his family.  The Red Sox honored Wakefield with a pregame ceremony before their 5-0 win over the Mariners this afternoon at Fenway Park.
  • David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News speculates about a Kevin Youkilis-for-Joe Blanton trade between the Red Sox and Phillies.  I don't see the Red Sox making that deal, as I'm not sure Blanton could replicate his current good form in the AL East, nor is he necessarily even a clear upgrade over any of Boston's current rotation.

Orioles Designate Brad Bergesen For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | May 12, 2012 at 5:24pm CDT

The Orioles have designated Brad Bergesen for assignment, reports Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun (on Twitter). The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Bill Hall, who was called up from Triple-A.

Bergesen, 26, had pitched to a 5.13 ERA with 4.6 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 for the team's Triple-A affiliate this season. He's made 59 starts and 24 relief appearances for the Orioles over the last three seasons and owns a 4.68 ERA in 394 1/3 career innings. Bergesen appears to be a candidate for a waiver claim given his age, flexibility, and the fact that he has a minor league option remaining.

Orioles Beat Brad Bergesen In Arbitration

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 9, 2012 at 12:02pm CDT

The Orioles beat Brad Bergesen in arbitration, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets. The Paragon Sports International client will earn $800K in 2012, instead of $1.2MM. The Orioles have confirmed the arbitrators' decision.

The 26-year-old Bergesen was arbitration eligible for the first time as a super two player this offseason and will remain under team control through 2015. As MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows, Adam Jones is now the Orioles’ lone unsigned arbitration eligible player. His hearing is scheduled for February 17th. Teams are now 3-2 against MLB players in hearings this offseason. Emilio Bonifacio and Anibal Sanchez of the Marlins are the only players to win arbitration hearings so far in 2012.

Brad Bergesen Had Arbitration Hearing Today

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 8, 2012 at 2:40pm CDT

Orioles right-hander Brad Bergesen had his arbitration hearing today, the Associated Press reports (via ESPN.com). Bergesen asked for $1.2MM, while the Orioles countered with $800K. Arbitrators Robert Herzog, Mark Burstein and Elizabeth Neumeier heard the case and are expected to reach a decision by tomorrow.

The 26-year-old Bergesen is arbitration eligible for the first time as a super two player this offseason and will remain under team control through 2015. Bergesen will get credit for completing 100 innings in each of the past three seasons and contributing as a starter in the AL East. However, his 2-7 record and 5.70 platform season ERA work against him. He is a client of Paragon Sports International. As MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows, Bergesen and Adam Jones are the Orioles’ remaining unsigned arbitration eligible players.
