Pirates Acquire Drew Sutton From Braves

By Steve Adams | May 20, 2012 at 5:00pm CDT

The Pirates have acquired infielder Drew Sutton from the Braves in exchange for cash considerations, tweets Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.  Sutton, 28, owns a .258/.322/.403 slash line in 178 big league plate appearances.

The utility man signed a minor league contract with Atlanta in November.  Sutton was hitting .267/.373/.363 in 37 games for Triple-A Gwinnett this season.  He'll be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, and Biertempfel tweets that he expects the club to make a corresponding move.

Cant imagine the Braves did this for any huge reason. Cant say its gonna get us remotely close to enough money to be in play for Oswalt (not that id recommend us giving him massive amounts of money for a half of a season.). And it certainly wont get us enough to lockup Bourn or Mccann, though the latter I think they’ll lock up regardless. Cant really see a big reason they made that move other than a little roster and cap space.

This has Oswalt written all over it.

Delgado and Minor aren’t doing good, one needs to be sat down. Were looking like a serious post season threat, and having just Hudson, Hanson, and Beachy isn’t enough. Throwing Oswalt in there and having a 4 man rotation for the post season will seriously help us out (NLCS MVP in 2005, a career 7-2 pitcher in the playoffs, with like a 3.50 something ERA.). And then Oswalt has said many times, he wants to be a Brave, so that means he might take a discount to come here over Philly/Boston/Wash.

After Delgado’s last start, I have to agree. Oswalt will probably be signing with us. Hopefully Jurrjens improves too to send down Minor as well.

I tend to agree that we will probably sign him, but I don’t think it has anything to do with Sutton. I cant think the Pirates are paying very much for him.

What do you’ll think the possibility of Fransisco being sent down is?

Not likely. Not while there’s a need for a platoon 3rd baseman to tag team for Chipper. Besides, who do you call up in his place? Terdoslavich? Bethancourt? No, they aren’t ready yet. Simmons? Not while Pastornicky is doing decently well. Any outfielders? Constanza is a possibility and I guess you can make a case for Durango. But Pie has been a joke so far. With Sutton gone, the only infield possibility from AAA is Ernesto Meija who is a 1B. And even though he is doing well with a .306 batting average, I cant see the Braves bringing him up to help out at 3rd when Chipper needs relief. So we’re left with Fransisco as the best option. But he hasn’t done that bad. He       may not be the best contact hitter, but he has respectable power and he’s at least a formidable threat at the plate if used right.

what the braves need to make a move in the starting rotation like send down Delgado start Chris Medlin need to start stretch him out in side session keep Mike Minor up we need a left handed pitcher send Delgado to the bull pen when the braves traded for Born they should have got Pence also so they would not be so left handed bat heave.

Send Minor down before you send down Delgado. I dont care if he’s left handed he’s doing dreadful right now. Delgado has a 4.26 ERA and batters are batting .236. I admit that’s bad, but Minor is 7.09 ERA with .296. And as I’m watching them play the Reds right now I have a feeling both of those are going to go up. I would like us to utilize Medlen in a starting role too, but for now we need him. At LEAST until we get Moylan back. I might go after Oswalt in FA and add him. Then you have a solid 1-4: Hudson, Beachy, Hanson, and Oswalt. Then just fix the 5th spot and you’re good.

Seriously: We need a left handed pitcher that loses every game he pitch’s.??Glad you are not the pitching coach.
