The Pirates have acquired first baseman/third baseman Jeff Larish from the Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations, according to a team press release. Larish will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis tomorrow.
Larish, 29, last appeared in the majors in 2010 with the Athletics. The veteran hit .240/.330/.449 in 75 games for the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate last season and hooked on with Boston last week.
The move marks the second trade of the day for the Red Sox as they acquired Scott Podsednik from the Phillies earlier this evening.

Red Sox are in sell mode. They’re giving up on the season.

They’re sending mixed signals, first they go out and get Podsednik and I think they are in it to win it, then they go and trade Larish and it looks like they have given up on the season.
What an emotional roller coaster.

i feel like acquiring podsednik might somehow technically still be selling

Larish wasn’t helping anything. He was another 1b *thinking* if Lars stayed at the MLB level for long and only really Gomez on the PawSox roster.
They don’t have anything at Portland who can call up and is ready.. Means Lars is at Pawtucket for the duration is how I see it, or unless some emergency comes up.

No they are just giving away the people who have made them lose the whole season. I can see the next headlines. “Dodgers Acquire Josh Beckett From Red Sox For Two Pieces Of Gum.”

“We” already have enough middle relievers.

I keep up with Red Sox transactions as much as possible but I can’t but think one thing..”we had Jeff Larish?”

The only reason for Bucs to sign Jarish is AAA depth in order to promote Hague or Fox, which implies they’re shopping McGehee.

I was thinking the same thing. McGehee was signed as sort of an insurance policy for Alvarez. They can cash him in now. Actually, the Brewers could possibly use him to cover 1st base about now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Casey back with the Brewers before too long.

Larish moving probably means Middlebrooks is headning back down to Pawtucket. He was brought in when Middlebrooks was promoted, and could not have been anything more than organization backfill…
