Red Sox Acquire Scott Podsednik From Phillies

By Zachary Links | May 11, 2012 at 7:50pm CDT

The Red Sox have acquired Scott Podsednik from the Phillies, a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).  The Phillies will receive cash considerations for the outfielder and he will report to Triple-A Pawtucket, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com (Twitter links).

Podsednik, 36, has not appeared in the majors since 2010 when he played for the Royals and Dodgers.  The Red Sox were said to be scouting the veteran roughly three weeks ago as they have been on the lookout for a left-handed hitting outfielder.

The outfielder hit .254/.340/.396 in the Phillies' and Blue Jays' farm systems in 2011 and signed a minor league deal with the Phillies last fall.  For his big league career, Podsednik owns a .279/.340/.381 slash line.

Why didn’t they just keep Scutaro?

Should have just kept the $50 they probably sent to the Phillies.

Scutaro was not needed. Aviles has done a really decent job. It is this constant parade of OF bums that is beyond maddening that they both acquire and continue to recall from Pawtucket, leaving at AA/AAA the only ones who are worth a flip behind.

No chance for Lin it seems, much less Linares. The cycle of washed up retreads and useless veterans continues.

Still not a believer in Linares at all, but I wish they would give Lin a shot.

They seem to have this phobia with always pinch running for ortiz late in games (and losing his bat when they blow these leads) and now it’s strike out king McDonald who comes in, K’s after Ortiz leaves.. Wouldn’t anyone be better than McDonald? Even the untested Linares as the pinch runner and see if he can only strike out 1/3 of the time? It would be a vast improvement…

          Edit:

Yeah.. I’d take Lin 1st.. We know his glove is solid at least.. Nothing about McDonald is.

McDonald is hitting better in the majors than Podsednik is in AAA

huh?? Posednik is old….i think he would go to Pawtucket it makes no sense to me why he wouldn’t, the Red Sox have Ross,Sweeney, Byrd, Mcdonald, and Nava, and Ellsbury coming back very soon, and Crawford coming back..

It’s just for Pawtucket outfield depth with Nava on the big club. He has an opt out for June 1.

Nava made a couple of excellent catches in left field last night, got a hit, and showed some real hustle on the base paths.  I think Bobby V. likes that. Perhaps, Podsednick is a fill in for Danny in LF at Pawtucket?  Otherwise, he could serve as the designated pinch runner, if Darnell(I can hit ground balls) MacDonald goes.  Sweeney look smooth in CF …. He deserves more playing time, Bobby.

Quick question: Does anyone have a link to an at bat by former Oakland A’s player Mark Kiger? I need to see his skillz.

My brother and I used to hit socks in the backyard and tried to be Kiger. Most foul balls wins!

      5 pitch AB: 10 pts
10 pitch AB: 30 extra pts.

Over 10 pitch AB: 100 pts overall.

I once fouled off 30 balled up socks in an overall 40 pitch AB. My personal record. My brother Evan managed 14 once.

It boggles my mind that after all the griping about the left-handed-heavy line-ups of last year, we’d go out and purposely acquire another one this year. Sweeney is filling in admirably when given the chance. And we have Ellsbury and Crawford due back. Just had a thought that might interest the other posters: WE NEED PITCHING!!! NOT another has-been lefty bat. I knew we’d miss Theo, but never thought it’d be this much!

We need pitching, but if another player becomes available, that can help, why not do it. Last years Sox would not have done this. If Pods can put up his typical year, you won’t want Crawford to come back, to bat .198

The Red Sox were looking for “a left-handed hitting outfielder”. Not sure if the “hitting” qualifier applies in Pods’ case.

I wouldn’t be suprised if those loons up there in management thought he could still steal 50 bags a year to replace Ellsbury..”The Podfather” as baseball reference calls him is a joke…he is clearly going to Pawtucket
