Nationals Designate Xavier Nady For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | July 21, 2012 at 9:24am CDT

The Nationals have activated Xavier Nady off the DL and designated him for assignment, the team announced. The move allows the club to add John Lannan to the roster so he can start one game of today's doubleheader.

Nady, 33, had been on the shelf since late-June with a wrist issue. He hit just .157/.211/.275 with three homers in 109 plate appearances for Washington this season, including a .176/.222/.353 line against left-handers. The Nats signed Nady to a minor league contract during Spring Training.

today is a double header, so there’s a roster exception to add a 26th man, which lannan could be activated under.

besides, nady wasn’t on the 25 man roster before today, so he didn’t need to be added and released today to add lannan.

pretty sure nady was added/released because he had reached the end of his rehab assignment and had to be activated today. they released him after activating him because they didn’t want to release anyone else on their 25 man roster to make room for him.

regardless, it had nothing to do with lannan.

“Where have all the flowers gone”

Jason Bay next? The potent, middle of the order Pirates sluggers have been barely singles hitters for several years now and Bay wouldn’t be around if not for his large contract.

What a shame. Nady was a really good 5 tool player for several years. Better than Bay I thought.

That’s too bad. I liked Nady and he had great stats as a pinch hitter, but injuries forced him into a starting role which clearly is he is no longer able to do.

maybe the giants take a chance? cant he play first? maybe the change of venue will be good for him and being close to his home town playing a few hrs up the 101 from salinas where he went to HS i always liked him with him being from salinas and me from soledad always nice to have a home time kid in the MLB

Yep, had nothing to do with Lannan people! New rule in the CBA that allows teams to add a 26th player for a double header. Then after the game its back to upstate New York and the Syracuse SuperChiefs.
