Players Who Cleared Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 10, 2012 at 3:55pm CDT

This is a running list of players who have cleared waivers, based on published reports. Once a player clears waivers, he can be traded to any team (barring a no-trade clause). This list can always be found in the sidebar under MLBTR Features. Player names are linked to the source articles.

Updated 8-31-12

Infielders

Nick Punto, Red Sox - Punto earns $1.5MM this year and will earn the same amount in 2013.

Outfielders

Carl Crawford, Red Sox - Crawford has $102.5MM remaining on his contract after 2012, so he was expected to clear waivers. Crawford can block trades to two clubs, but no team can flip him to the Yankees after acquiring him from Boston.

Alfonso Soriano, Cubs – Soriano can block any trade. He earns $18MM per season through 2014.

Juan Pierre, Phillies – Pierre earns $800K in 2012 and he'll hit free agency after the season.

Catchers

Joe Mauer, Twins – Mauer earns $23MM per season through 2018.

Starting Pitchers

Joe Saunders, Diamondbacks – Saunders earns $6MM in 2012 and will hit free agency after the season.

Roy Oswalt, Rangers – Oswalt earns $5MM in 2012 and will hit free agency after the season.

Kevin Millwood, Mariners – Millwood earns $1MM in 2012 and will hit free agency after the season.

Relief Pitchers

Carlos Marmol, Cubs - Marmol will earn $9.8MM in 2013 before hitting free agency.

That’s a weird clause in Crawford’s contract. Was that Boston’s contingency or Crawford’s?

I don’t know, but it’s actually pretty funny. Not the funniest clause, but it’s pretty good.

The real question is whether or not it’s enforceable. Can’t player and team jointly void a contract? Can’t they strike specific provisions if they want?

I’m sure Boston. They felt like they beat the Yankees and didn’t want it to eventually turn on them maybe?

It was Crawford’s. He’s not big on big market teams (he’s got a bit of the Greinke anxiety in him). Remember, he didn’t really want to go to Boston in the 1st place, but the deal was so much more lucrative than the one offered by the Angels, so he signed w/ Boston.

Crawford’s doing.  Sox obviously have option not to trade him to Yankees.  If they wouldve made a trade without that clause, they could put a stipulation in trade that Crawford couldn’t be dealt to Yanks.  Like the Packers trading favre to Jets, there was a poison pill that would’ve given Packers 3 first round draft picks if Favre was trade to Vikings.  Granted, penalty/compensation would have to be different in baseball, but same concept.

If it’s Crawford’s doing, why doesn’t he just have a no-trade clause for the Yankees?

I always thought this clause was inserted by the Red Sox.

I’m 99.9% sure that was put in by the Sox. What logical reason would he have to not play for the Yankees if a team wanted to trade him there? Certainly WOULD make sense for him to have a no-trade clause to the Yanks simply because he could leverage into some sort of extra compensation to accept a trade (a guaranteed option if applicable).

It would have to be the Sox that wanted that clause. While the Sox can decide whether or not to do a deal with the Yankees, they can’t control what another team would do with him once he’s traded. The irony is, the Red Sox would probably be happy if the Yankees took him.

Nobody will claim Punto, though I wish to heck they would.

In the minority? But I would rather have CC than Ellsbury. It’s one or the other with that money and think LT that CC will last longer and Ells still cost more.

irony is Bay would have been better off swatting at the Monster and Crawford roaming Citi

Back in the mid-late 70’s when the (then) hapless Tampa Bay Buccaneers went nearly 2 seasons without a win.. Something like 24 losses in a row. Here in Tampa, they had this chant “Dump McKay, in the Bay”, as in Bucs coach John McKay.

Maybe the Mets should come up with a nice jingle like that for their own “Bay” and they even have an actual bay so close by??

Actually Mets fans have been pretty understanding towards Bay. The guy hustles and gives his all on every play. The Mets fan realizes that everytime he’s been hurt, it’s been trying to make a play, and to their credit haven’t killed him like they did Luis Castillo or Ollie Perez, two recent busts. There are always some boos heard when he fails in a clutch situation and they would certainly welcome his departure, but for the most part, they’ve been civil towards the guy.
