uhh… ok?

Pretty much my reaction. I mean, I don’t mind the idea (pending what the Cubs give up of course) but it seems like an odd choice. Hendricks and Wada both look like better options than Doubront as a starter.
Some kind of precursor to a Wesley Wright/James Russell trade? A desire to keep a second lefty for the ‘pen after such a trade?

I hope so. It would be amusing as a Red Sox fan to watch Felix traded to a team only to end up in the bullpen again.

If not that, all I can see it as is an organizational depth move where he sits in the minors. The only person I’d let him replace in the rotation is Edwin Jackson and any improvement from that would be matched by the money that’s going to waste.

I doubt the Cubs give up anything of value. If so, the article would have included that person’s name over Dubront, as they usually write the name of the best player changing teams.
Could be your second scenario… but why? It’s not like the Cubs NEED a good lefty reliever. They’re last or close to it in the standings.
I think they may think they can get something out of Dubront down the line. Probably just paid cash for him.

They don’t need one. I think it’s something that Rick Renteria likes to have though.
Probably just an organizational depth move to see if they can get him to be what people thought he could be.
Edit: This close to September call-ups, he might stick around to help out a tired bullpen but I’m guessing he’s in the minors next year unless either he proves something the rest of the year/in Spring Training or somebody else falls flat on their face.

Hopefully for nothing even remotely good.

It’s a shame this guy has potential but he’s been floundering for a while. I expect a bucket of balls for him at this point.

for Chris Bryant

The Cubs LOVE buying low on pitchers. Why not take a chance on Doubront? It worked with Arrieta. Still has 3 years left under team control, if he doesn’t work out they could always non tender him.

Theo and Ben are both bad at trades involving pitching, so this should be good.
PaidByTheNotes
bad at trades involving pitching? feldman for arrieta/strop? maholm for vizcaino? demp for hendricks/villanueva? garza for edwards/ramirez/grimm/olt? LOL
MeowMeow
Sorry, I meant he was with the Sox, and this is a trade involving the Red Sox. His track record with the Cubs has been pretty solid.
ChiefIlliniwek
Yeah, he totally blew it when he traded for Josh Beckett and got a World Series MVP out of it.
MeowMeow
You mean that deal ownership did while Theo was on his little hiatus? Yeah that was a great deal. I wonder how Theo might’ve messed it up had he been involved at all
ChiefIlliniwek
I stand corrected. I forgot about his little tantrum-vacation.

Fine with me. He has so much potential but hasn’t out it together and has a bad attitude when he gets moved to the bullpen for his bad performance. See ya!
Chioakcisco
No better move to signify that you’re being “active at the trade deadline” than to acquire someone coming off of a Johnson-esque 2/3 IP, 6 H, 6 ER performance.
Chris Top.
He’s under team control til 2018; we better not just be giving him away. He’s had solid stretches for the Sox before and throw over 160 innings two straight seasons as a young age, with respectable results. He’s a mess right now and his conditioning has always been a concern. But you just don’t give up on young left handed pitching without a decent return. He had an option left, I would of rather seen him work out his difficulties in AAA. I guess I won’t get to mad though til I see who we got in return.

Would be interesting to see if Bosio could do anything with him, he hasn’t looked too good this season but always flashed some decent stuff occasionally.
