Managerial Notes: Roenicke, Backman, Price

By Mark Polishuk | April 21, 2015 at 12:33pm CDT

Here’s the latest on a few managerial situations that could already be hot seats…

  • Ron Roenicke is earning $1.3MM to manage the Brewers this season, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter links).  Milwaukee exercised its option on Roenicke’s contract for 2016, and while Rosenthal doesn’t know the dollar figure for that extra year, he believes it can’t be too far beyond the $1.3MM figure.  With the Brewers off to a terrible start, Rosenthal figures that if the team wants to make a change in the dugout, Roenicke’s guaranteed salary wouldn’t be a major obstacle.
  • Wally Backman was recently mentioned as a potential candidate to replace Mike Redmond as the Marlins’ manager, though Backman was reportedly “shocked” to hear it, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.  Mets GM Sandy Alderson said that the Marlins hadn’t asked for permission to speak with Backman, who is currently managing the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate.
  • Reds manager Bryan Price issued an expletive-filled tirade about the media prior to Monday’s game, a reaction that Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes could be partially inspired by frustration over Cincinnati’s shaky situation.  The Reds are considered by many to be closer to a rebuild than they are to contention, and “Price is not just feeling the seat hot beneath him, but is living within a culture with an ugly near future,” Sherman writes.  Price apologized for his language today via the Reds’ official Twitter page (hat tip to the SportsCenter Twitter feed), though he stood by the content of his comments.

The thing is why did Bryan Price REALLY act that way and say all that?
They are only 6-7. They had some exciting games. That whole division is pretty evenly matched. So….. does he want the job.
If anything that was a bit of an over reaction at least that’s how I feel about it.

No he’s talking like a child about things he obviously knows nothing about…..The media got what they wanted (a story) they will not change even slightly and Price and the Reds organization looks like fools.

He’s a manager who seems to misunderstand what reporters/journalists do for a living. That’s bad news.

They’re only one game under .500, but I think there are some real questions as to how deep the roster is in Cincy right now.

Price is a terrible manager….And his comments make him and the Reds organization look like naïve idiots…..Worst manager in baseball not even close.

Dodgers fans might differ about the “not even close” part.

Bryan Price has a long way to go when it comes to tirades. Hal McRae and his phone-throw/spin move is still the best of all time.

Thank you Mr. Price for the expletive tirade you gave. My co-workers had a field day with it. Bryan I watch most of the all the Reds games and I know Billy Hamilton has not been right since he slide into second base and injured this had. I also know Mesoraco is lunging at everything and that his swing is off. I also know that you were giving a team that started the year with 4 non-roster invitees. Don’t get mad at the media for pointing out the obvious. Your are just a little to deep in the water here and are not qualified to sail this ship. It is just to bad you were put in a managing spot your make a very good pitching coach.

Walt get something right I know you don’t like to admit when you make a poor choice with personal but hire Ron Gardenhire before we lose Cueto and Leake.
