Quick Hits: Soriano, Draft, Price, Red Sox

By Mark Polishuk | April 23, 2015 at 2:50pm CDT

Scott Boras, Rafael Soriano’s agent, tells Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that he’s getting an increasing number of calls about his client.  It’s not surprising that interest in Soriano is picking up now that the season has begun and teams are dealing with injuries or ineffective relievers in their bullpens.  The Twins, Tigers and Blue Jays have all been linked to Soriano at various points over the winter, though it’s unknown as to whether any of those teams still have any interest in the veteran.

Here’s some more from around baseball…

  • Commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters (hat tip to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle) that he would like draft prospects’ “medical information to be made available to all clubs before the draft,” but the MLBPA hasn’t accepted this proposed change to the collective bargaining agreement.  Drellich explains the stances of both the league and the union on this issue, which most notably cropped up when the Astros didn’t sign first overall pick Brady Aiken due to concerns about his left UCL last summer.
  • David Price could be more inclined to sign with an NL team next winter since “he loves to hit,” a source tells George A. King III of the New York Post.  While this will likely be a minor factor in what could be a $200MM free agent decision for Price, maybe the desire for more plate appearances could end up being a tiebreaker if he gets otherwise similar offers from an AL and an NL team.  For what it’s worth, Price has an .071/.133/.071 slash line through 30 career PA.
  • With Edward Mujica struggling and his velocity down, CSNNE.com’s Sean McAdam wonders if the Red Sox might eventually release Mujica and eat the roughly $4MM remaining on his contract rather than let the righty continue in an important relief role.  In my opinion, releasing Mujica would be a hasty move this early in the season since his xFIP (2.78) and SIERA (2.50) hint that he isn’t that badly, and his 4.70 ERA or 6.90 FIP are due to a couple of wildly inflated peripherals (most notably, 3.52 HR/9).
  • Several of baseball’s top pitchers were acquired by their current teams before they became so-called “aces,” and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe notes that the Red Sox attempted this strategy by acquiring two pitchers with great stuff (Joe Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez) in the hopes that one or both would develop into a rotation headliner.  This isn’t to say that the Sox might still not try to trade for an established ace in the near future, yet trying to find one in the early stages of his development is sometimes a better strategy than paying a big price to land a proven starter who might already have passed his prime.

The Twins could sure use Soriano. This bullpen is an embarrassment. Dead last in strikeout rate by a wide margin.

Honestly, would the Red Sox consider going after Soriano? I’d at least like to see Matt Barnes used as a 7th/8th inning guy from here on out.

I’d assume they’d have to release Mujica, and Barnes would have to struggle, before they’d consider doing it. Of course, that could change if somebody else struggles too.

Barnes hasn’t exactly lit it up in AAA this year.

He is the most likely to translate into a relief role though. I wouldn’t want Owens, Johnson, or E-Rod coming up only to pitch in the bullpen.

Did Boras tell Carfardo that when he came to pick up his dry cleaning order and go wash his car?

Since when has Joe Kelly been considered a pitcher with great stuff? That is news to me. Inaccurate news at that.

He wasn’t considered more than Triple AAA filler/spot starter for the Cards.

Exactly, he can be a good solid pitcher but it is impossible to mistake him for someone with great stuff.

So a 96 MPH two-seamer with good movement isn’t a pitch that has “great stuff”? I’d beg to differ. His issue is his inability to control the strike zone. Sometimes he looks completely lost out there. If he can learn to stay around the strike zone consistenly, he can be much better.

Great stuff is someone who sits in the mid-90’s or has great movement or has tremendous secondary offerings. Just because Kelly touches 96 doesn’t mean he has great stuff. Phil Hughes can hit 96 I’d never confuse him for someone with great stuff.

Average velocity against the yanks was 96.5 and max velocity of 99. That sounds like what you describe.

A good fastball with what secondary offerings? Also if his stuff was so “great” his strikeout numbers would indicate that.

His strikeout numbers ARE indicating that with 9.2 K/9 so far this year. And he has a nasty curveball and a rediscovered slider that are also consistently missing bats. As far as his game against Tampa, he was brilliant through 5 innings before getting squeezed out of some borderline pitches in the 6th. He still needs to learn to trust his stuff when down in the count, but the potential is absolutely there.

Kelly is extremely raw… There is potential there, but as a Cards fan who has seen him alot I cant see him taking a huge step forward and becoming an ACE. IF Kelly can harness his stuff and control counts better he COULD be a very good # 3..

We certainly need to do something. I don’t trust the majority of our bullpen at this point. Haven’t trusted Schlitter or Edwin Jackson since we acquired them, and Coke and Motte aren’t making a case.

Strop, Rondon and Rosscup are the only ones I don’t hold my breath for when they pitch.

Joe’s got a really quick hook so far this season, but he doesn’t have a bullpen that can support it.

“hometown” discount refers to the team that the player is currently with, and is allowed to negotiate with him NOW.

This post is a great example of how statistical analyses can be misleading compared to plain old data. While I appreciate the notion that it is ‘too early to release Mujica’, the evidence to support the claim are rate stats and xFIP/SIERA. Does that seem counter-intuitive to anyone else?

The utility of HR/9 for a sample of less than 9 IP is limited. It would be clearer to state Mujica has served up 3 HR in 7.2 IP, IMO. Sabermetric stats are awesome and concise, but are intended to make sense out of much bigger datasets.
