Cubs To Release Phil Coke

By Steve Adams | May 26, 2015 at 8:30pm CDT

The Cubs have placed Phil Coke on release waivers, tweets SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo. Coke will become a free agent on Thursday afternoon once he clears waivers, and six clubs have reached out to Coke’s camp, according to Cotillo. Coke had been designated for assignment back on May 19.

The 32-year-old Coke signed a minor league contract with the Cubs this offseason and earned a guaranteed $2.25MM salary when he made the club’s roster. However, Coke’s tenure with the Cubs didn’t produce fruitful results, as he yielded seven runs on 14 hits and three walks (two intentional) in 10 innings with nine strikeouts. The resulting 6.30 ERA was hardly appealing, though FIP (3.54), xFIP (2.94) and SIERA (2.63) all showed more optimism regarding his small sample of work.

Coke’s velocity still checked in at a healthy 93 mph, and his 63.6 percent ground-ball rate was certainly a positive factor as well. Prior to his deal with the Cubs, Coke was most prominently connected to the Rangers, though there were also rumors linking him to the Royals and Marlins, among other clubs. Given the amount of teams consistently looking to add bullpen depth throughout the course of the season, Coke’s live arm will likely draw interest on the free agent market.

Sign him to a minor league deal, see if he can turn it around. I believe he still has a respectful amount of upside… Maybe our training staff can fix Coke, or he can turn it around playing for the team of the north!

Look at this guy’s career numbers then you’ll realize you wouldn’t want any part of him.

The only thing that would make Coke look better north of the border, is if you listed his ERA in metric.

Please don’t be the Mariners…I know Rodney needs to be replaced but Coke is not the answer.

Rodney, his stupid “archer arrow into sky” move after he wins a game
is annoying. I remember a couple years ago Longoria and the Rays won and he imitated it, angering Rodney. Was pretty funny, but can never find a video of it =(

I have a feeling Rodney’s lack of command is
related to the extremely short step he takes towards the plate… He’s
getting older now and can’t really blow a ball past someone, he’s better off focusing on command.

Speaking of quirks, the one that irritates me the most is Johnny Gomes and his hitting helmet.

Could this mean the Cubs are in the middle of working out a trade for a bullpen piece or Soriano signing…….

I could see the rangers landing coke and claudio hasn’t done a superb job as that lefty specialist so they might send him down to triple A soon and sign coke on Thursday I would think. You put coke and Sam freeman in the bullpen for the rangers whoa thats cool
