East Notes: Buchholz, Kelly, Sandberg, Yankees

By | July 18, 2015 at 7:51pm CDT

Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz will see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his strained flexor tendon, writes Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Buchholz doesn’t believe the injury is more serious than originally thought. However, he trusts Andrews’ opinion as an impartial observer, and they have consulted over previous injuries. Interestingly, Buchholz mentioned his contract status as a reason to seek an opinion outside of the organization. The Red Sox own team options for 2016 and 2017.

Here’s more from the East divisions:

  • Marlins utility man Don Kelly had season-ending Tommy John surgery, tweets Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. Kelly got into just two games for the Marlins in early April. He also spent a short stint at High-A. In 1,190 plate appearances, mostly with the Tigers, he’s a .232/.296/.335 hitter.
  • A roster move is in the Orioles immediate future and Chris Parmelee may wind up with the short straw, writes Roch Kubatko of MASN. The club plans to recall Kevin Gausman for a start on Wednesday. The O’s are currently carrying just 11 pitchers, so a position player will have to go. In addition to Parmelee, I could see Ryan Flaherty, David Lough, and Nolan Reimold as players who could be designated. Jonathan Schoop could be temporarily optioned if Baltimore didn’t want to risk losing anybody. Also per Kubatko, the Orioles are monitoring prospect Dariel Alvarez. They could promote him soon despite concerns about his defense and plate discipline.
  • When Ryne Sandberg resigned as Phillies manager, it caught colleague and friend Larry Bowa by surprise, writes Jim Salisbury of Philly.com. In an interesting interview, Bowa offered some opinions as to why Sandberg walked away. In addition to expected changes related to the hiring of Andy MacPhail, Bowa posits that Sandberg was fed up with a lack of work ethic in modern players. Bowa offers quite a bit more nuance so I recommend Phillies fans read the article.
  • According to assistant GM Billy Eppler, the Yankees are engaged in several trade discussions, reports Brendan Kuty of NJ.com. Eppler played coy to the specifics, but he did note that it would be hard for the club to outdo the reinforcements they received off the disabled list – namely Jacoby Ellsbury and Andrew Miller.

You’re managing guys like Freddy Galvis, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Jon Papelbon, Carlos Ruiz and Frenchy and you’re going to complain they don’t have a work ethic? I think thats just his excuse for wanting to jump off a sinking ship that you were only making worse.

Sandberg never said those guys lack work ethic. He wrote in his autobiography 20 years ago that many modern players lack work ethic.

People have only speculated that the roster’s lack of work ethic was a factor in him leaving.

Team Management was going to need a Fall guy this year maybe next , he was a Bag Man for the Phillies Management For their Bad decision with Starting with Hiring Ruin Tomorrow Jr as GM. He Started to see the chess Game being played, and anyway he just wasn’t the Man for this City, Even Uncle Charlie showed more fire than Mr Vanilla. If you can’t win , distract the Fans attention by Voodoo.

That’s only 7 players out of 30 or more that have been on the team this year. And while those seven may be veterans who have a strong work ethic, all five offensive players have had an OPS+ below 100. If he had a team of young, hungry players busting their butts trying to prove themselves in the majors, maybe he doesn’t leave. Apparently, though, that’s not what he had, which makes it even sadder than normal to be a Phillies phan.

Ryan ,a Nice man, good Family Man,but he wasn’t the Personality that Phils needed, No inspiration , Dull and Slow with Decisions, There a reason the Guy wasn’t Hired by any Teams Prior to Phils ( Ruin tommorrow Jr.) hiring him.

To be fair prior to joining the Phillies he was only in the running for one other team and that was the Cubs.. Its not like he was campaigning for a manager’s job for years and the Phillies were the only one that took a shot on him.. It is telling though that the Cubs being the team he played for during his hall of fame career and who he came up managing in the minors with passed over him for Mike Quade another rookie manager who they let go after only one full season.. To those that point to Sandberg’s minor league manager career as reason for him being a solid manager only need to look at Quade’s to see that being a good minor league manager does not set you up for success in MLB..

The Yankees could offer their top 5 prospects, Pineda, Nova and Betenaces and I still doubt they would come close to Mike Trout.

They probably would, but everyone in NY would raid Yankees stadium and call for Cashman’s head.

i almost hope they do, just so we can watch Yankees fans go nuts for about an hour… then realize that once again they’ve got 1 quality player under the age of thirty and no farm system… again.

It pains me to think of how Trout would be a Yankee if they hadn’t signed Teixeira.. I like Teixeira a lot and I am glad to see him healthy and hitting again but that is one I wish the Yankees had a do over on.. Problem is, if the Yankees had drafted Trout back in 2009 they probably would have traded him before giving him a legit shot at earning a roster spot.. Cashman trading him for Jimenez or Bedard would hurt way more than just missing out on him in the draft..

Outside of “Needs Tommy John surgery” and “Suspended 50 games for drug abuse” I’m guessing “Seeing Dr. Andrews for a second opinion” is high on the list of phrases no fan base wants to hear.

When you play for a team with a history of rushing players back into action before they have properly healed then you are perfectly justified in going outside the organization for a second opinion.

No great surprise about Sandberg. Hall of Fame players have not been great managers. Frank Robinson–16 years as a manager and only six winning seasons and zero trips to the playoffs. Same for Ted Williams, Mel Ott and Pete Rose. Yogi Berra had a couple first place finishes and a winning record but the management of the Yanks and Mets wasn’t impressed. Rogers Hornsby won a world series his first full year as player-manager of the Cardinals and the Redbirds were so grateful, they traded him to the NY Giants. He managed a number of other teams and had mostly losing records. Joe Cronin did pretty well as skipper-shortstop of the Senators and Red Sox. Lou Boudreux got a World Series title but ultimately lost more than he won. Red Schoendienst had some early success when he took over STL but eventually was replaced after many non successful years. Most of the successful managers have been borderline MLB players: LaRussa, Herzog, Bobby Cox, Sparky Anderson, Lasorda, Alston, Durocher, Stengal and now, Bruce Bochy and Mike Scoiscia.

Interesting thoughts on Sandberg but no real surprise. Hall of Fame players have not been successful as managers by and large. FRobinson, Mel Ott, Ted Williams, Pete Rose for example. Joe Cronin, Red Schoendienst, Lou Boudreaux and Yogi Berra all had some successes but overall…were found wanting. The Most successful managers were marginal MLB managers: LaRussa, Herzog, Alston, Lasorda, Sparky Anderson and today, Bruce Bochy and Mike Scioscia.

The Yankees really don’t have to make any moves, but I’d like a true bench bat like david murphy over Jones. Maybe a rotation piece like Latos, someone to be a mccarthy like gamble.
