Yoenis Cespedes is the Tigers’ top rental piece now that David Price is in Toronto. He’s widely expected to be dealt today following the trades of Price and Joakim Soria, especially because he cannot receive a qualifying offer at the end of the year, even if the Tigers keep him. (Cespedes’ contract calls for him to be released at its end so he can reach free agency despite not having six years of service.)
Here are today’s Cespedes rumors…
- The Angels have had discussions with the Tigers regarding Cespedes, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
Earlier Updates
- Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post tweets that the Nationals do not have interest in Cespedes.
- The Nationals are a surprise possibility for Cespedes, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. GM Mike Rizzo is said to love him, Heyman notes. It’s somewhat unclear where Cespedes would slot into the Nationals’ outfield if everyone is healthy, though. Heyman also lists the Mets as suitors for Cespedes, and rumors do suggest that the two sides are at least having preliminary talks.
- The Tigers’ asking price on Cespedes is currently high, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, with the belief being that Detroit would ask the Orioles for Kevin Gausman in return. The Orioles, reportedly, are loath to part with the former No. 4 overall pick.
- The Orioles could still make a Cespedes trade work even after acquiring Gerardo Parra, tweets ESPN’s Buster Olney. Corner outfield help has been the Orioles’ top target over the past week.
- Olney’s colleague, Jayson Stark, tweets that other clubs feel that the White Sox are struggling with how the impact of Cespedes or fellow corner outfielder Justin Upton would impact the current roster. The ChiSox already have a logjam at first base, DH and the corner outfield. I’d suggest that Avisail Garcia could be demoted to Triple-A. The Sox remain high on him, but he’s not showing much power and has struggled in the field. As of yesterday, the Sox had flipped the switch from “seller” to “buyer” and were said to be aggressively pursuing offensive upgrades, including Cespedes and Upton.

Come on Cardinals this fits your perfectly right now!
zerobs
Isn’t Garcia out of options?
bombsaway
He has one option remaining
sufferingmetsfan
Don’t know why the Mets aren’t trying to workout a deal. Cespedes would but a much better fit than Bruce.
John Mozeliak
The Cardinals can afford to give up a couple prospects for this guy. This is a NEED. And if this year goes well he could very well sign long term.
John Mozeliak
But I know the Cardinals will not go big and they will stick with Brandon Moss.
stl_cards16 2
Likely OF is Piscotty, Grichuk, Heyward. Moss at 1B
Lefty_Orioles_Fan

Oh come on the Orioles will do no such thing!!!!!!!!!!!!
basemonkey 2
Yeah. There’s no way they part with any of their top young guys. It’s just nat’l reporters drumming up interest.
coleham
@sufferingmetsfan Please take Jay Bruce. You need him, he’s awesome. He was the saviour of the Reds organization. Get it done.
Dock_Elvis
Dombrowski generally does such a good job. Sitting back and watching the field develop helps the Tigers. He was able to get a better package for Price than Cueto might have… Now the field for rental OFs is narrowing and he’ll do well flipping Cespedes
sportingdissent
Garcia is one of the few players that has at least been consistently average, with no huge swings either way. While the other players are obviously an upgrade, I’m not sure it’s a huge upgrade. They could really use a consistent bat at second or third. Guys like the Reds Brandon Phillips and (pipe dream) Todd Frazier should be on their list before a corner OF, unless the idea is to give up on Adam LaRoche.
I take it back, the best idea is to give up on Adam LaRoche and acquire another bat anywhere.
Dock_Elvis
Todd Frazier certainly is a pipe dream within a pipe dream. I’m not even sure how the Sox get that done with out grossly altering their roster structure.
nrd1138
The Sox scored a lot of runs with LaRoche out of the lineup which should tell you something. However, I still think at the end of the day the last two series for the Sox is a pipe dream and they will come back down to earth. Every time they have gotten to .500 they swoon and lose 4-5 games then and that is another MO of a Robin led team. I can see that still occurring here. Do not give up what little you have for a rental that likely is not going to push you over the top.
Dock_Elvis
LaRoche was a solid offseason signing… Hasn’t worked so far for sure…must be drinking from Adam Dunn’s old dixie cup
sportingdissent
Vehemently disagree. Their lineup underperformed significantly versus history. Now that the numbers are returning to their historical form, the White Sox are performing exactly as they should have all season. That rotation is elite. This is one of the better teams in the American League.
Dock_Elvis
I agree…but their record until now might mean that they don’t exceed expectations going into the season. Sox are also often notoriously bad early on. I think they can be interesting, but they still have a hole to dig from and a log jam to overcome. I don’t want to sell them short, only mention the deck their slow start has stacked against them.
raef715
didnt Laroche always used to suck in the first half and then put up big numbers in the second? but no signs of waking up at this point.
The White Sox invested so much this season, now that they are showing some life, may as well go for it within reason.
sportingdissent
Other way around. The worst is yet to come!
Dock_Elvis
True….he used to be my stellar 2nd half fantasy pickup.
mikecws91
Nope. He got off to a hot start, but he’s hitting .223/.280/.299 since June 1. That would be tolerable given the team’s production to date, but he’s also been HORRIBLE in the field.
max l
I thought he’s been mostly DH’ing??
Niekro
Could the Braves be a 3rd team that helps the White Sox would not mind them taking a flyer on Garcia he has so much potential.
Dock_Elvis
I just don’t see the Sox trading Garcia and replacing him with a rental.
I’m also wondering of teams are.holding off on deal with San Diego in lieu of waiting to see if players are placed on waivers in August
nrd1138
Agreed, though I will admit a send down to the minors for Garcia to have him work on his power may wake him up. Maybe he is just complacent with how he is doing now, which tends to be a theme with many of the players on this club all season.
Dock_Elvis
I don’t always buy into managerial effect…but Robin is pretty laid back.
stl_cards16 2
Not many of the Padres are going to pass through waivers. So unless you’re wanting Shields, the deal has to be done today.
stl_cards16 2
Reply fail.
Dock_Elvis
No they probably won’t… I suppose unless you’re a team with a high waiver order number and it makes sense.
Shields makes sense, especially if he keeps posting solid numbers. That deal was just so backloaded
Los Calcetines Rojos
I really don’t see the sox doing anything of significance. Only thing I can see is Carlos Gonzalez right now. Yoenis just doesn’t fit with this team in terms of the logjam it will create and same can be said for Upton. The rental status also doesn’t help since the sox are trying to rebuild a system as well as contend.
I could see someone like Cargo as a possibility due to his control but that would be a nifty set of prospects along the lines of frankie montas, erik johnson, Trayce Thompson, and Courtney Hawkins. That package would set the sox back big time and I really don’t see Cargo as the type of player you should do that for.
RedFeather
Cardinals need to offer Poscotty, Marco Gonzalez, and Alex Reyes for Car Go right now.. He is under control for a few more years so we can take the pressure off of resigning Heyward next year. Get out there and do it MO. Plus it would be funny to see Car Go change uniforms tonight and play against the Rockies.
Vandals Took The Handles
The last thing the Cardinals need is to get another LH hitting OF. They’e already overbalanced that way.
RedFeather
Well not if the left handed hitting OF Jason Heyward walks next year.. which was my point.

Storen for Cespedes.

Wow.. POST FAIL, sorry guys for that.. Old commenting was so much better
Dock_Elvis
Yeah…I’ve been patient with the new system.. But after having gone through the trade season on here now… I realize that it might have been better to wait until after on the remodel… The lack of exit and new post filter as well as the notification system have been very difficult. Its OK if you want to go manually check a comment for replies and you only post once….but I’m a regular and I’m active in the comment section. I spend 80% of my time now just tracking posts.

How crowded can the Angels outfield even get? lol
jmorgan
Lol the orioles….
Doubt it…
I will eat my hand if they make another trade today

The…Angels?! How many outfielders do they *need*?
