I can confirm for M’s fans that Miley is awful. He’s barely a number 4/5 starter. That was a terrible trade for the M’s, and Carson Smith is helping my Sox have possibly the best BP in the majors.
mike156
Yes, Miley is awful, He was terrific at the moment Boston traded for him, but this deal may go down as one of the worst in history for Seattle. My only question was why the Sox needed Carson Smith, since the entire bullpen was already Hall of Fame bound?
kjt404
Not so sure about that, worst trade in Matiner history. As an Ms fan love Carson and Roenis, I hated to see them go. That said, I can name at least four trades in their history worse than this one.
Brixton
His FIP is much lower than his ERA, and going to player for a team that doesn’t have a DH playing LF, or Pablo Sandoval anywhere near it is gonna help. Plus hes moving from the AL East and Fenway to an easier offensive division in a bigger park.
I love Carson Smith as much as the next guy, but the Sox don’t even have the best bullpen in their own division.
Heck, you could argue that they’re only third in that division. .
jrwhite21
But Miley does carry value as an innings eater for sure. He should also benefit from a rejuvenated Seattle defense and pitching in Safeco.
I agree with the point that this was not the best trade for the M’s, however, I don’t believe the BoSox have the best bullpen in baseball – likely not even the best pen in the AL East. Probably top five in the league. I still believe they need a better LOOGY setup than Robbie Ross and Tommy Layne.
sn33
This is not the first time you have posted this nonsense. The Red Sox pen isn’t better than the Yankees or the Orioles. That is third best in their division, not the best in baseball. Please get a clue and lose your homer glasses once in a while.
Dock_Elvis
I’m convinced he’s Hawk Harrelson moonlighting here trying to get back to the Red Sox from the burning outhouse that is the southside.
dwilson10
The Red Sox may not even have a top 10 bullpen in baseball. All they have in Kimbrel. My Orioles have a much better bullpen.
Brixton
They still have Koji and Smith
theo2016
The fact that no one mentions tazawa is a travesty. The sox have the deepest bullpen. Its certainly top 1/4 in baseball. I love givens but that was 30 innings. Right now i would rate the sox above baltimore with baltimore having a chance to be better. The yankees bullpen isnt deep so that might backfire, chapman isnt all that much an upgrade over justin wilson imo. The sox have the best swingman in elias also. These bullpens are really about even though and in the end it will come down to the pos players and pitching, in which case the red sox are the favorites.
Brixton
I excluded him because he just wasn’t very good last year.
I’d rather have the….
Royals, Astros, Yankees, Orioles, and Pirates over the Sox.
theo2016
He was the same as ever. He had an elevated babip and low strand rate. Everything else lined up exactly as it should. This is where you have to understand due to low innings totals e.r.a is the most irrelevant stat when looking at relievers. How many times do they get pulled for a lefty specialist that gives up the hit to score their run or 1 terrible outing can add a half run to the e.r.a. peripherals are more important for relievers than starters f.y.i due to the year to year volitility. And thats 5 teams you would rather have which is what i said. Top quarter means top 7 or 8. And the difference between the top is marginal. Like i said the sox are deeper, one injury to any of those pens save maybe the royals makes a big difference while less so for the sox. Keep in mind chapman is missing the first month as well so the yankees are realllllly thin for that first month.
bigpapi4ever
Orioles have a better BP then the Sox? Lol
Kimbrell > Britton
Uehara > O’day
Smith > whoever the O’s #3 is
And so on…
sn33
Ok well first of Britton was better than kimbrell last year. Britton has actually been better the past two years combined. The same can be said about oday over koji only by a wider margin. Not to mention he is 40. Givens/bundy/matusz/brach is going to be better than smith/Tazawa/and whatever two guys you think are hall of famers because they play for “your sox” so your whole “and so on” is a joke as well. This is why everybody on here makes fun of you. Because you tie everything to “your sox” and have no clue about their true talent level as well as no clue about other teams obviously. You are absolutely comical.
Brixton
Last 2 years:
Britton: 1.77 ERA, .944 WHIP, 90% save conversion, 5 WAR
Kimbrel: 2.08 ERA, .975 WHIP,, 91% save converison, 3.8 WAR
Saying Uehara>O’day is a joke.
Smith and Givens aren’t that far apart, if at all. In fact, GIvens was better last year, however only in half the innings.
Then.. factor in depth. The Orioles have other ERA-under-3 guys in Matuez and Brach, when the next lowest ERA on the Sox after your “big 3” is Robbie Ross, whose ERA was near 4.
Brixton
From there, I’m curious of ur argument against the Yankees pen.
Chapman>Kimbrel
Betances>Smith
Miller>Koji
Shreve>Ross
sn33
It’s simple. The guys on the right play for “his sox” so they must be far better.
bigpapi4ever
We’ll have to agree to disagree and leave it at that
sn33
Nobody with half a brain would agree with such an asinine statement. Brixton even put out numbers for you. You have zero argument or clue.
dwilson10
Look up the projected best bullpens in baseball for this year. The Orioles are 3rd and that’s with Jason Garcia, he already got sent down and replaced by Bundy (who is better than Garcia). That’s also without Mychal Givens who had a 1.88 ERA last year as a rookie. The Red Sox were 26th last year and Baltimore was 5th. The best back end of the bullpen this year is the Yankees then the Orioles.
dwilson10
You just can’t see past your own players. There is no agree to disagree, you should even disagree with your own statement. The Red Sox are not a top 5 bullpen
sn33
Exactly. Even I can admit the Yankees will have a better bullpen than “my Orioles” haha I can’t wait to see his post that says Pablo > Machado
stymeedone
Miller was traded to the Tigers.
stymeedone
Oooops, that was Wilson. soo sorry.
hojostache
Yup…Yankees BP is stacked, unfortunately their SP is not. Everyone would need to stay healthy AND pitch at their expected level or better. I don’t think either happens.
bigmarketbusts
If Sanchez doesnt make the rotation, I think you can even argue Torontos is deeper than Boston with Cecil, Osuna, Storen and Sanchez
NorahW
This thread is supposed to be about the Seattle Mariners, not who has the best bullpen in the AL East.
donniebaseball
Not even the best bullpen in the division man. Miley had a bad year, but keep in mind relivers are volatile in nature
chesteraarthur
Man, I can’t wait to watch the bosox crash and burn.
I can’t tell if you’re delusional, ignorant,or just a troll. I’d love to hear how their pen is better than NY’s.

Acquired Logan Morrison for Logan Morrison?
angels fan 3
They signed Chris iannetta to a major league deal
charliewilmoth
Thanks. (I discussed him in the post, obviously, but missed him up top.)
olyfan
Cook also has a major league deal (as did De Fratus before he was waived & re-signed to a minor league deal). Aoki has a vesting option.

They signed Chris iannetta
Brixton
I actually really liked what they’ve done.
They made a ton of underrated moves and overall improved just about everywhere.
Martin is better than Jackson when hes hitting.
Aoki is better than Trumbo if Trumbo is playing the outfield.
Lind > Morrison
Iannetta atleast as upside, and was worth 4 WAR in 2014-2015.
They improved the bullpen and the rotation as well.
rightwingrick
Miley will likely have his best season ever in Seattle. It’s a pitcher’s park, tough on right-handed hitters, good for left-handed fly ball pitchers. And Miley will be a #3 or #4 guy, and what they want him to do is eat innings and be reasonably solid.
Anyone who knows Seattle baseball knows the Miley trade is FAR from the worst trades the M’s have made. It doesn’t even make the top 10.
thebatflip
Adam lind come back home!!! Go jays!
Samuel
The best I can say for that GM is that at least he’s not “Preller!”
Angels got the good GM. Mariners got the bad one.
polishphlyer
Sad to see Carson Smith leave but he’s had 1 good year in MLB and, watching him, 1) I’m not convinced he’s MLB prime – yet 2) his pitching motion is Tommy John scary. King Felix had 201 inn. last year and nobody else was close. After losing Iwakuma (for about 5 min.) Jerry Dipoto looked around, saw Miley’s 193 inn. and friendly contract, and decided he was Mr. Right Now. As a #5 SP, he looks even better. So, a maybe-great RP for a solid #5, and that’s okay with me.
You can’t look at the 2016 spring training bullpen and say it’s better than the 2015 spring training bullpen (coming off a great 2014). The 2015 bullpen, lack of SP depth and an inexplicably bad offense sunk 2015. Dipoto’s done a nice job with SP depth and getting people who can create offense, so 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an overhaul of the bullpen as 2016 progresses.

As a Seattle season ticket holder in the ’80’s, I’ll agree the Miley trade might not break into the top ten lousy moves. Don’t forget Chone Figgins, Steve Yeager, Kevin Mitchell,
Milton Bradley, Jeff Weaver, Jesus Montero, that’s all I can recall without having a puke bucket handy.
This is the franchise whose owner had to be lobbied mercilessly by all baseball people to draft Ken Griffey Jr. and not Mike Harkey. ( he thought he could get Harkey cheaper, because he was coming out of college and had no options) .
This is the franchise, that had to stop introducing the owner in his skybox because the crowd would start yelling ” JUMP “.
Ah, the good old days.

The Bedard trade… The Carlos Guillen trade… the H-Ram trade…the Varitek trade… The Carlos Silva signing… the Moyer to Philadelphia trade…
