Orioles Option Jackson Holliday

By Darragh McDonald | April 26, 2024 at 11:59pm CDT

The Orioles announced today that they have optioned infielder Jackson Holliday to Triple-A Norfolk. His roster spot will go to outfielder Ryan McKenna, whose contract has been selected. To open a spot on the 40-man for McKenna, catcher David Bañuelos has been designated for assignment.

Holliday, 20, came into this season as the consensus top prospect in baseball. The first overall pick of the 2022 draft, he mashed his way through four levels of the minor leagues last year. He went from Single-A to High-A to Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .323/.442/.499 along the way.

Coming into 2024, there seemed to be a legitimate chance of Holliday cracking the Opening Day roster, despite his young age. Back in December, general manager Mike Elias said as much, telling reporters that it was a “very strong possibility.”

During Spring Training, Holliday seemed to be ticking all the boxes when he hit .311/.354/.600 in official Grapefruit League action. Yet despite that huge stat line, the club decided to send him back to Triple-A to start the year. Elias stated that Holliday needed a bit more work against left-handed pitching and a bit more experience at second base, having only recently moved there from shortstop.

Some observers wondered if this was simple service time manipulation, but the O’s made another surprising move when they called Holliday up on April 9, less than two weeks into the season. He had only played 10 Triple-A games to start the year, hitting a huge .333/.482/.595 in that time, and he was still called up early enough that he could earn a full year of service time by staying up for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Unfortunately, his major league career has gotten out to an incredibly slow start. Through 10 games and 36 plate appearances, he has struck out 18 times, a massive 50% clip. He only has two hits, both singles, and two walks. That leads to a batting line of .059/.111/.059.

That’s a tiny sample size but the O’s have evidently decided that the best move is to send Holliday down to Norfolk and get back into a groove. It wouldn’t be a surprise if that doesn’t take very long. He’s still very young and clearly incredibly talented, while his struggles consist of a small sliver of time in the grand scheme of things. Plenty of star baseball players have struggled initially and still gone on to great success. To use just a couple of examples, Chandler Rome of The Athletic pointed out this afternoon that Alex Bregman had two hits in his first 38 at-bats while Kyle Tucker had just nine in his first 64.

While Holliday could realistically be back in short order and slugging in the big leagues, he’ll first have to catch his breath in Norfolk and string some good plate appearances together, which is likely going to push back his path to free agency and perhaps to arbitration.

A major league season is 187 days long but a player needs only 172 to reach a year of service time, meaning a player can be sent to the minors for 15 days and still get a full year. Holliday missed the first 12 days of this season and was still in position to get to the one-year mark here in 2024 but he’ll now be a pace behind that. A position player optioned to the minors has to stay down for ten days before being recalled. An exception is made if someone else is going on the injured list, but the likeliest scenario is that Holliday will be in Norfolk for at least a few weeks.

He could also earn a full year of service time in the less-traditional way. The latest collective bargaining agreement added measures to combat service time, one of which was the ability for a top prospect to earn a full year of service even if not called up early enough if they finish in the top two in Rookie of the Year voting in their league. Though for that scenario to play out now, Holliday would have to quickly produce better results in order to secure a fast recall and then thrive in the majors for several months. With rookies like Colton Cowser, Wilyer Abreu, Mason Miller and Evan Carter already racking up decent numbers, Holliday would be challenged to end up getting into the top two.

For the club, they will also be taking their prospect promotion incentive off the table for now. Another new measure of the CBA is that teams can earn an extra draft pick if they promote top prospects early enough to get a full service year, and that player goes on to earn a Rookie of the Year award or a top three finish in MVP or Cy Young voting in their pre-arbitration years. That was on the table for Holliday with his promotion a couple of weeks ago but won’t be a factor now. That could still come into play next year if Holliday retains his rookie status through the end of 2024.

As for arbitration, a player needs three years of service to automatically qualify. Each year, a subset of player get in early by what is known as “Super Two” status. That line moves from year to year since it goes to the 22% of players with the most service between two and three years. Holliday could qualify for Super Two status after the 2026 season, depending on how much time he spends in the majors between now and then, as well as where the cutoff is after that year.

In addition to Holliday’s struggles, the O’s are able to make this move because so many other players are performing so well. Gunnar Henderson and Jordan Westburg have both been excellent and seem likely to take the bulk of the middle infield playing time. Westburg had been spending more time at third but could now move to the keystone on a regular basis with Holliday’s demotion, with Ramón Urías getting more time at the hot corner. Urías isn’t hitting well this year but has solid career numbers at the plate and he is considered an excellent defender at multiple positions. Jorge Mateo is available as a depth infielder off the bench.

McKenna, 27, gets back on the Baltimore roster just a few weeks after being removed. He spent the past three years serving as a glove-first bench outfielder for the club. From 2021 through 2023, he hit just .221/.299/.318 but racked up eight Defensive Runs Saved and seven Outs Above Average on the grass. He also stole eight bases in nine tries.

He exhausted his option years in that time and was nudged off the club’s Opening Day roster this year, but was passed through waivers and stuck in the organization. It was reported earlier this week that McKenna was taking some reps at second base to expand his versatility, but he didn’t get a chance to take the infield during actual game action for the Tides before getting added back to the big league roster.

For now, it seems like he will go back to his role as a depth outfielder, behind the regulars Anthony Santander, Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad. Once Austin Hays is ready to return from the injured list, McKenna may be in jeopardy of losing his roster spot again, though Kjerstad getting optioned back to the minors is another possibility.

Bañuelos, 27, has been bouncing on and off the roster in the past week-plus, mostly out of convenience. He has been traveling with the team on the taxi squad as an emergency third catcher behind Adley Rutschman and James McCann. Twice in the past ten days, he was added to the roster when someone else was hurt, seemingly because he was there and ready to suit up. In both cases, he was designated for assignment shortly thereafter.

The first DFA led to Bañuelos passing through waivers unclaimed and sticking with the O’s. If he were to pass through unclaimed again, he would have the right to elect free agency as a player with a previous career outright. He has one major league plate appearance, a flyout, and hit .270/.369/.526 in Double-A for the Twins last year.

Hey if they call him up in a month then fine. But I bet anything he will get called up in July and he will barely miss the cutoff for being a super 2. And frankly I don’t have a problem with them doing that but let’s not pretend service time doesn’t matter.

Or it could just be the fact that through 10 games, he has been worth minus a half win. Sometimes even the best prospects aren’t ready for the majors and service time manipulation isn’t the reason

I say hats off to Balt! They could have left him in the ML until July to start with but they gave him a chance. He could have forced their hand, but he sucked. Say what you will but he deserves this. Most teams would have never done the 10 game trial.

Yes, service time does matter. You don’t want to burn a year of service time to learn on the job and be below average,if they started his clock they would have done it to get above average production and possibly win the extra pick.

Holliday is 20 and if he is not quite ready that is OK but then he can’t learn on the job for the defending AL east champion.

I’m sure long term Holliday will be a great player but for now the Os have enough alternatives.

Yes, the team will be aware of service time, but if you think his call up will be based on that, rather than the needs of a contending team, you are double jointed and have your head in a dark place. He will get the call when he’s ready to cover for someone who is slumping or injured.

To players with a lot less hype, 36 at bats would be their entire career with that kind of output. So it is not nothing. I hope he gets it together, but there are no guarantees.

I’d like to think it is a cross between production and service time. Some teams promote kids so that they can waste three years of service time learning how to play.

That is true on all parts… Holliday will be a very good/great player… also, that’s what happens in the MLB… You tank alot and end up with the best farm system. Not the O’s fault at all… I hope things start shifting in the MLB…. you shouldn’t be rewarded by failing miserably and you also should be allowed to buy a team like the dodgers. Just an opinion!

Before it would be a factor, he would have to be well and then sent down. That isn’t the case. He was called up just before a service time was an issue – proof of not trying to manipulate – and he was sent down after giving a fair shot as opposed to 1 or 2 games.

There is no manipulation until there is and here, there isn’t so no, it isn’t a factor.

It is merely a conspiracy in your mind that it “could be” or “might be” what Orioles management is thinking.

They call those “theories” not facts.

They should’ve let him start the season with the big club. Sending him down for two weeks was dumb, and only messed with the kid’s head. And once he was up, they should’ve given him another week. Clown shoes management for a team so unbelievably stacked with talent.

Look at his AAA stats – do they look like his head was messed up?

How about the concept of sending him before he strikes out 100 times out of 200 (his pace) so he can regain some confidence before he goes in a well!

          Armchair psychology is dangerous!

Can you imagine if the O’s accidentally DFAed him instead? I was thinking back when free agency was in the infancy stage and Red Sox management was too late (I believe) with tendering Fisk his contract. He went free agency and as they similarly screwed up with Lynn and Burleson, they were traded to the Angels. If I’m remembering wrong, please remind me. Not sure why I mention this …

As a Pirates fan it was good to see Holliday get some MLB time – but totally expected he was going back down.

Easy. To see if he was ready to take over, plus that incentive they gave to teams for calling up rookies early. Since he didn’t show them he was ready, they sent him back down to get fixed so they can continue to contend. Not sure why people are even questioning this move. This isn’t a rebuilding team we’re talking about.

Dewey— I think you’re right about Fisk, a perennial Sox killer one he went to Chicago. They really screwed up when they traded Fred Lynn. I believe it was Rick Miller who came back in that deal, and I thought that Mark Clear was part of that same deal. Weren’t Lynn and Burleson traded in the same deal as well?

Yes, Fisk was on Haywood Sullivan. Jerk. I think Lynn and Burleson were separate trades. Lots of guys were let go in trades: Cooper, Scott, Smith, Lonborg, Lyle, etc. being a Red Sox fan in the 60’s and 70’s and early 80’s was tough. Then Buckner. Oy.

He seemed a little overwhelmed by all the hype, camera’s following him everywhere, the countless stories about his dad, him throwing up his first wad of chaw on national TV, being left out of the annual ‘who can grow the biggest mustache’ contest. How can anybody expect to perform under those conditions?

If it is a team like the White Sox or Rockies or another team without a lot of hope for the season, your idea makes perfect sense. But for a team with championship aspirations like the Orioles, they cannot afford to let someone “learn on the job” because it could cost then games that could be needed at the end of the year. The Orioles are not playing to judge players, they are playing to win games.

Because the minor leagues in baseball is far more established and expected. Overall #1 picks usually take 3-4 years to develop. The NBA is more reliant on pure athleticism which means you don’t really need to develop and learn because you can just freestyle if you are athletic enough. Nobody can freestyle in baseball.

I’m all for manipulating service time. Kid gets a huge signing bonus and they have no obligation to pay him piles of money a year earlier than they need to after developing him. A player isn’t going to take a discount to stay with a team so why should a team not maximize the players time at the organization. People try to make this a moral issue when it isn’t. It’s a business on both sides of the ball.

This wasn’t even service time manipulation. The Orioles have perfectly legitimate non service time related reasons to send Holliday down.

What are the qualifications for the 26th man? Do you really want a top prospect sitting bench? No. Do you want a high paid FA sitting bench? No. What you want is some one who can fill in defensively, pinch run, and maybe pinch hit. If they have options, great. If they can play multiple positions, the more the better. They are also likely to bounce from majors to minors, at the whim of the team, so they need to be disposable, just in case a waiver claim gets used, or they refuse the assignment.

Should have brought up Mayo to play third every day. Westburg at second. Where is the confusion in that. There is zero need for sub .200 outfielder or any outfielder at this point.

I am not certain Mayo is ready either. He would struggle, and is a righty, so BAL would be right back where they are now… with two perfectly capable IF riding the pine in Urias (reverse splits) and Mateo (only hits lefties).

What’s obvious is that they shouldn’t burn either of those two dudes in favor of an unknown quantity right now with the Yankees on the horizon next week. They need a bench player, not a starter. Plugging in Mayo right now would be premature.

        Two things.
        1. Looks like the Os have moved on. Drafted in 2019, Hjerstead 2020 and Cowser 2021 have passed him.
        2. Is there some flaw to his offense that GMs around the league see that is a red flag?

The reason they promoted McKenna over Stowers is probably because McKenna plays CF well and Mullins has not hit lefties well so far this year. McKenna will play CF against lefties probably only until Hays returns.

That’s part of the sink or swim mentality. If you can’t swim in the deep end, stay away. There have been plenty of guys who were younger than him and had better starts to their first year. Ivan Rodriguez started out strong in this first 10 games. He had 14 hits in his first 10 games. Trout had 6 in his first 10 games.

I get it, not everyone will be successful in the MLB and that’s the reality. I think the guy is a bit overhyped just because of his father. Kind of the same as with Vlad Jr.

It’s incredibly stupid to keep him on the roster when he is as young as he is. He is really holding the team back at this point. Anyone else then people would’ve wanted them sent down after 2-3 games.

Why do you keep repeating that without context?

Yes, maybe this is the only time he’s struggled in his pro career. His pro career is only 165 games though. So he’s looked pathetic in the easily most important, easily most challenging 16.5% of his career?

He may trun out well, we dont know. But straight faceplanting in this 16.5% of his career as he did is not showing that yet

          Haha sorry. 6% obviously

But point stands. 6% of his career is a pretty large chunk considering it is “only 10 games”

He struggles 10 more and its 12%. He struggles 10 more after that and it’s 16%. He struggles 10 more after that and it’s 20.5% of his career

Sending him down is the only logical choice before he makes himself look like a complete bust; something he would do extremely quickly based off his “of his pro career” games played youre so focused on

A poor debut/cup of coffee like this is rarely enough to send a prospect down in the rankings, not that rankings ultimately matter much anyways. He only turned 20 back in December and I suspect will go back to crushing AAA pitching upon his return. Most prospect evaluators will very much consider him one of the absolute best prospects in the game despite the poor debut and demotion.

This does absolutely nothing to his prospect status, he’s 20 years old and this is simply too small of a sample size. Changes nothing

Well the Orioles will get another year of service time.

Them sending him back down tells me that there is something in his swing they want him to change. He can make swing adjustments that he can benefit from in AAA. If the Orioles thought he just needed to adapt to MLB without a swing change MLB wouldn’t help that.

The first year Mike Trout was called up: .220/.281/.390 for a wRC+ of 87. Clearly a bust…. at 19.

    Age 20: .326/.399/.409 for wRC+ of 167. and a season of 10.1 fWAR.

I’d caution against people comparing Trout’s cup of coffee against Holliday’s first taste of the majors. Holliday’s small sample size was 15x worse than Trout’s by wRC+. While I think he’ll be fine in the long run, it’s worth remembering a few things:

    1) Prospect development is not linear.
    2) Success is relative. Some consider Profar a bust, but he’s carved out a humble 10-year ML career.
    3) Failure is a natural part of growth. Unfortunately for Holliday, it came on the biggest stage in an era where fans have been spoiled with increasingly fast starts to great careers by young talent.
    4) Comparison is the death of joy. However Holliday develops, he’ll develop.

I’m sure he’ll get another bite at the apple in the not-too-distant future.

I agree, nowadays, it’s mostly about what have you done for me lately, attitude. Growing up, watching baseball, I don’t remember there being so much hype and exaggeration of players as we do today. But, I guess that’s expected, given his dad was in the majors. I guess that’s just part of being a successful player in the MLB. If you can’t take the pressure that is with all of the media and fans constantly watching you, then you’re probably not going to have a long career.

I’d imagine he gets another shot later on this year and probably cracks the starting lineup next year. But, with any player, you never know how they’ll perform. Remember Rick Ankiel? Guy was lights-out for 2 years and then fell off a cliff.

I think fans — especially here — are more in tune with the business side and forecasting of performance. It’s a fun extra layer to analyze, but we’re dealing with living, breathing, emotional humans (and a very precocious one, in this case). It’s always better to keep expectations low and be surprised; baseball is hard.

Overhyped prospects sometimes fail the first time or period. It happens.

For every Ken Griffey Jr., there are 20+ Billy Beanes and I am probably being conservative.

There’s a reason most players spend 4-5 years in the minors.

    1. Holliday can’t learn to hit MLB pitching in AAA. When he goes back down and hits again everyone will go “see?” But he’s still only hitting AAA pitching.
    2. 36 AB is a blip. Most stars can point to a 2 for 36 somewhere in their careers.
    3. WHY MCKENNA??? Do they need a 5th outfielder? We already know what to expect, because he’s had 447 AB somehow that he’s going to hit .220 and hit 1 or 2 HR in 100 AB, and that he’s an ok outfielder. Not that they don’t have Cowser, Santander, Mullins and Kjerstad, plus supposedly Mateo can play CF too so they bring up another OF not named Stowers?

      Replying to 1.
I think they want him to make a swing adjustment. I bet they will have him do something to shorten his swing (maybe lower leg kick?) and recall him once he starts hitting AAA pitching well with the new swing. Apparently they had Cowser change his swing when he went down last year and it took him a while to feel comfortable with it.

I bet they identified something to change in his swing a while ago but they werent going to change anything as long as it was working for him.

Nobody is perfect. I would imagine he goes down and works it out. A rough start but he has been told he was the next greatest thing for a while and it may have been too much. This may be that humbling experience we all occasionally need to get us in the right place to succeed. It wouldn’t surprise me if he is back up before September.

Plenty of MiLB Gods who transitioned poorly. Adell hasn’t even put up a glimmer of his MiLB skills, Gabriel Arias is another from the last 2 years. PEOPLE see the numbers and IGNORE the context.

MiLB is about heat. That is why Verlander’s heaters were turned up like a Miata on nitro, BUT his sliders/curves, had a 71% Whiff rate. You bring up those MiLB superstars and they chase EVERYTHING from excitement, then get paralyzed by curves.

O’Nioel Cruz is no different so far. All of those HRs in ST, 2 were off of Veteran pitchers, the rest were MiLB pitchers..throwing heat.

I watched him from his last 2 years in Travel ball and the kids bat was passable. His fielding was amazing. He was as ranked as he was because of the pool available, not the performance. Wait till you see how Dismal Max Clark does, same scenario, lackluster pool, big fish in a dinky pond. Why he has an amazing .279, .378 OPS, .377 slug which doesn’t really transition to power..and that is in RK ball 🙂

For the Holliday fans, man I AM SO sorry this happened. The kid, IF HE CAN EMOTIONALY recover…that RIpken BS was horrible to lay on a kid…he MAY be up in 3. He does not have ANY plate discipline and not only can he not hit curves/sliders, up and in balls, but he can’t even tell if that is what is coming at him, so he has a LOT MORE than a swing to work on. So I hope they fix him.

I wonder when the MLB will start testing for winstrol in the minor leagues more than twice a year with a hand-slap the 1st time and no publication of offense which rolls over each january? Oh well if they don’t take action for cocaine, heroin, PCP..(lol) and STILL have not reinstituited the testing for HGH….Ah well, money is money

Holliday is not a bust. He does need time at AAA to work on some things. Why would a team stacked with infield talent and division title aspirations let him work those things out at the MLB level? This was the obvious move.

Holliday raked and raked some more in ST. Baltimore basically said we love you Jackson but can’t quite fit you up here enjoy AAA for a month.

Holliday goes down there and takes even more. He forced their hand. Good for him.

MLB pitchers said hit this …he couldn’t….I think Baltimore would have stuck with him but for the K rate one out of every two is beyond even Joey Gallo.

He stays down there for a month plus and will be back. Maybe sooner if an injury takes out Gunnar, Westburg or Mateo for a couple weeks.
