Cafardo’s Latest: RPs, Bautista, Teheran, Shields, Ausmus

By Connor Byrne | June 5, 2016 at 10:24am CDT

This summer’s trade market will favor relief pitchers, not starters, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. While the pool of starters who are expected to be available looks shallow and largely unappealing, the opposite is true in regards to bullpen options. Cafardo points to Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Arodys Vizcaino, Jeremy Jeffress, Jeanmar Gomez, Sean Doolittle and Will Smith, among many others, as relievers who could be on the move in the next couple months.

Here’s more from Cafardo:

  • The 30-27 Blue Jays are in the thick of the playoff race, but if they fall out of it, right fielder Jose Bautista and first baseman/designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion (both pending free agents) are prime trade candidates. The Cardinals, Cubs and Hunter Pence-less Giants would all have interest in Bautista, according to Cafardo.
  • The Red Sox and Braves would match up well in a potential trade involving right-hander Julio Teheran, per Cafardo, who notes that Boston’s package would have to be headlined by outfield prospect Andrew Benintendi, infield prospect Yoan Moncada, third baseman Travis Shaw or catcher/left fielder Blake Swihart. Of that group, the Red Sox would prefer to give up Swihart, though Cafardo doubts he alone would be enough of a return for Teheran.
  • Before the Padres traded righty James Shields to the White Sox on Saturday, the Red Sox, Orioles, Tigers and Dodgers expressed interest in acquiring the 34-year-old. Shields’ final start with the Padres – in which he allowed 10 earned runs, eight hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings on Tuesday – served as a deterrent to some clubs, though, reports Cafardo.
  • The 27-28 Tigers aren’t considering replacing third-year manager Brad Ausmus as of now, relays Cafardo. However, given that he’s in a contract year, Ausmus could be managing for his job.

If the Red Sox trade any of those guys, save maybe Swihart, for Julio Teheran, all my faith in Dombrowski will instantly evaporate.

Very telling that this is published the day Swihart is put on the DL. Sums it all up right there. Yes, even when healthy he is enough for Teheran.

If Red Sox fans think that they can get a solid pitcher (even if he’s not a #1/#2) with the durability, “track record” (he’s shown success), and cheap contract like Teheran without giving up at least 1 elite prospect, they’re mistaken.
As a Braves fan, I don’t ask for Moncada (bc its too much) or 2 of the top 3/4 elite prospects, but Benintendi + Raudes/Chavis/lower prospect is “too much” to trade.. I don’t have a response for RS fans- lol.

Swihart for Teheran is a pipe dream. Not because I’m a braves fan (which I’m not BTW) but coppy just said they would have to be overwhelmed by an offer to deal Teheran. More like Benintendi, Roudes, and Chavez. Is it too much? Yes. But Atlanta’s front office won’t take any thing less. I think Houston is a better fit for Teheran. Bregman and Martes would be enough for ATL to pull the trigger.

Bregman is going nowhere. Especially not for Teheran. Not saying that Teheran is a bad player or anything because he’s a very solid pitcher but Bregman isn’t being sold for anything less than a perennial number 1 pitcher and even then I don’t see it happening. Assuming Bregman stays on this path and keeps up this type of play in the majors, he will be playing shortstop for the Astros for a long time.

Correa is not a very good defensive ss. Many people assumed when he came up that he’d eventually end up at 3b.

I would very much rather Bregman play at short. Like chesteraarthur said, Correa is not that great of a defensive shortstop. Correa is 6’4 225. Bregman is 6’0 180. Correa has the ideal frame and arm strength for 3rd base. Bregman, while he could very well be a serviceable 3rd baseman, has the ideal frame for short and has more range than Correa.

You are forgetting that Julio equates to a no. 1 because of the current market. There are no front line starters available via trade or free agency this year because the Nats locked up Strasburg. It is a sellers market, with the Braves being the sellers. I could easily see the Braves getting Bregman for Teheran. Especially with the Astros staff.

I’d gladly keep him- we’re paying him $12 million dollars in his final year of his contract and that’s less than what a BOR pitcher is making NOW and much less than what a pitcher his caliber will make in 4 years.

Cool, so you save a little money on a number 3 starter while there is no bats in the system. The one thing the braves have are back end starters. They should absolutely look to move him.

“no bats” isn’t correct. “not that many bats” would be accurate though.

and lol- “absolutely look to move him”- not really unless we get a return that we like. If not, we don’t have to move him. We don’t lose anyway unless Teheran becomes like Jurjens which is unlikely….
We can keep him to “lead” (notice how i didn’t say anchor b/c I dont think he’s a #1 pitcher) the young rotation in the future or trade him for (an) elite prospect(s)- it’s a win-win solution.

Red Sox fans don’t think Tehran is a number 1 or 2 or even a 3 if he were to come pitch in the AL East. Would you give up 2 top prospects for a number 4 pitcher? If not, that’s why Red Sox fans think it’s too much to give up. We can certainly disagree with how we are projecting Tehran in the AL, but admit that he won’t be a lights up top pitcher on the Sox.

I can’t argue that because there’s nothing to back that statement up.
But I can argue that he’s arguably pitched better than any of the RS arms this year and has dominated two of the better/best AL teams in 2016 (Royals AND the RS themselves).

He’d be fine in the AL East. His numbers would go up due to playing in tiny ballpark’s for 75% of his starts, but any starter is going to have that.

As a Rangers fan I can say from experience that just because a pitcher pitched in the NL East doesn’t mean he’s Not going to pitch well in the AL, case in point the Cole Hamels trade from last season. The Red Sox were too afraid to make the trade but Not the Rangers and the Rangers continue to reap the rewards!!!

They’re not necessarily saying it’s not equal value, they’re saying that it’s not worth it to them. Teheran is a good pitcher, but not the type where people are willing to make the overwhelming type of deal for.

that depends on the player and the proposed deal..
some fans want like Moncada and Swihart or Benintendi and Espinoza.. that’s crazy..
But Benintendi and a lower prospect for Teheran ISN’T crazy… especially when he’s going to be their #3 pitcher (or better bc the RS rotation is garbage except for Price, who’s struggling right now too) and getting paid literally the minimum for a pitcher like him.

I guess Teheran’s success in 2013 and 2014 means absolute crap then @chesteraaruthur. When it comes to success, you don’t take just this year’s work, you take their career work. I said Wright has been good for 70+ innings b/c before this year, he was bad last year (4.00+ ERA in 72 innings) and barely pitched in 2013 and 2014.
Teheran on the other hand pitched well in 2013 and 2014 and struggled in 2015 like most young pitchers at the age of 23-24- it’s not uncommon for young pitchers to struggle and you guys are taking it like it was some rare occurance. By your logic b/c you think Wright had twice as much as value as Teheran, Teheran AND Wright should both be triple the value of David Price b/c he has a 4.88 era right now, right???

Teheran is a former #1 in baseball prospect with a team friendly contract pitching in TOR form. The only reason he wouldn’t be the Sox #1 by a big margin is they overpaid for Price last year.

Did that trade really help the A’s? No, but the Cubs got a good shortstop in return. I think this defeats your comment in showing that just because you can make a trade does not mean you should. Now, if getting Chapman only costs you some lower rung prospects, then yeah it is a good deal, but selling the farm for a guy that will be around for 1/2 a season is to really a smart way to manage your system IMO.

Greatest observation this year., last year, maybe ever, for baseball, final exams and poetry.

As to Bautista and Edwin E. getting traded: Caf may be correct, but I dare to say that

        — Tulo would be the first go …. whose play is screaming for aanother field and another manager.

        — after the current manager, whom for the love of the game I cannot understand why or how he remains, such as the way he is presently brutalizing young Osuna’s arm, and then there is his field-managing consistent one-run losses ,

—- then either Edwin or Bautista may consent to be traded to a contender.

What use would the Cardinals have for Bautista? He isn’t going to replace Piscotty, he can’t play center, and he isn’t going to replace Holliday. He isn’t going to displace Diaz, Carpenter or Peralta (who is expected to join the team again in 2 days). Maybe they throw him at first, but then what do you do with Adams who is under control and started hitting again or Moss who is currently looking more like the player in Oakland and less like last year? So why would they give up the haul necessary to rent Bautista?

Once again Cafardo shows how little he knows about baseball outside of his time zone. MLB did not rule that the Dodgers could not use lasers to position players, they simply reiterated the rule that they can’t be used during play (which the Dodgers were not doing anyway), and that the rulebook states that markers can’t be left on the field. Cafardo’s remark that this technology isn’t available to other teams is puzzling, to say the least. Somebody, please explain why the Boston Globe guy’s weekly baseball missives are followed so closely. Might understand it if he got things right…

My favorite quote from the weekly Cafardo PR piece
“David Ortiz has registered the three slowest home run trots in 2016, according to trot tracker Larry Granillo. The Red Sox DH strolled around the bases in 32.03 seconds on April 30, 30.76 seconds on May 8, and 30.13 seconds on May 28 “

Ausmus should just then go get a job in the White Sox org. They apparently keep you in place even if you have a mediocre managerial record (see Robin Ventura), and only will remove you in you hurt the owners feelings.

You want Ausmus? You can have him.
Ausmus does not learn from his mistakes. Lowe has pitched badly for over a month, now. Yet, Saturday, the Tigers had a lead late in the game, 7-2, and sure enough, Brad goes to Lowe. After 2/3 of inning of 2 run ball, he then had to go to the closer. Just terrible management of the bullpen. Lowe should be moved to mop up until he corrects his flaws, but Brad continues to use him only with the Tigers ahead. He did the same thing with Coke and Joba. Any wonder a team with this much talent flounders around .500?

If Red Sox were to trade one of those elite prospects and a top pitching prospect like Anderson Espinoza, I would want a Jose Fernandez.

If the Red Sox trade for Teheran here is a possible deal…
Red Sox Get: SP Julio Teheran and OF Jeff Francoeur
Braves Get: C/LF Blake Swihart, P Brandon Workman and INF Marco Hernandez

Cubs have some good prospects to trade but they won’t give up the any top prospects or any major league players besides possibly Soler,Richard or Montero because why mess with success? That would be stupid and they didn’t certainly get to this point being stupid!!

Is everyone really arguing about a cafardo article? That’s like arguing over a Plasche article. It’s irrelevant and written at an 8th grade level.

Bautista is batting .230. Whoever signs him will be getting the 2017 version of Prince Fielder, Carl Crawford, Big Panda, etc… He has gigantic waste of money written all over him, but yet someone will throw down $25M a year based off how good he used to be.

No surprise this is a Rangers fan. He has elite on base skills and still has big power. Whoever signs him will likely overpay, but do not mention him with those other players, Bautista will still be productive

Looking at average to see if a player is good is not a way to look at stats anymore. According to ops , he’s 23% better than league average, or 30% better than odor lol

I would say that in game play Odor is 100% better at landing a punch than Bautista. Who the hell wants to overpay for that guy. No way the Cards or Cubs want him and the Giants are to smart for that too.

Ya that’s correct, Bautista has baseball skills, odor has fighting skills. And teams will be lining up for Bautista if the jays fall out of contention, don’t kid yourself that they won’t

For a trade this year I would agree. But any team who signs him to a 4-5 year deal will be regretting it down the road. Teams keep throwing money at aging veterans and more times than not it comes back to bite them. Fielder, Choo, Crawford, Pujols, Hamilton, the list goes on and on.

Bautista isn’t like those players though, it is highly unlikely he’ll just fall off a cliff. It all depends on what he signs for though. If it’s 3 years and 80, it’s a good deal if he keeps doing what he doing, if it’s 4/150, you’re right, but not many players could justify that contract

Bautista playing in Chicago would be a major up grade. I thik his numbers would go up. Also hitting HR is Wrigley is easier than Toronto. I’m from Chicago and also have home in Toronto. I,m not BJ fan, I get sick of hearing about Toronto teams who the Canadian’s take very serious. Soler going to be traded, that is a fact when who knows but it coming – Mean time Cubs are looking into the Miller trade – I would NOT be surprised if the Cubs pull off a 3 way deal soon, or at least in the next month. Also when you guys are talking SP look at the teams. The A’s are in the middle of the pack, the AL is tight all around – Really the only SP to even think about doing trades with are Miami, Atlanta, TB and Miami is still in the hunt. So odds are slim they are going to trade their ace. Unless its the farm +1

It’s funny how cafardo talks about the Jays falling out of the race, I believe with the starting pitching of the Red Sox they’re just as likely if not more so to fall out of it, be interesting to see what happens if there offence starts to struggle.

First, Tehran has little chance of being traded, as he is young and controllable, and Atlanta wants a quick rebuild. The GM has stated it would take a major league player to get him, plus more. Second, Boston tried Swihart, and found him lacking, so he has become the Sox fans’ favorite trade bait. He has been exposed as a catcher, and his bat doesn’t play as well at any other position. He doesn’t have the value you think he does. Third, Cafardo has generated over 50+ responses to his nonsense. I guess that’s why he gets his own column.

I don’t see why the Cardinals would want Bautista, nor do I see the two as a fit. I don;’t think they have the prospects to acquire him, and they really need to focus on improving their pitching IMHO

A lot of talk about what a guy is worth. Its not about matching up players values in trades, it’s about giving more than other teams that want a player would give. Unless you are Dave Stewart.

I wonder if this means that they are in the trade market for a RF now, To be honest, with Bautista, Encarnacion, and many other talented players on the Jays’ roster becoming free agents at the end of the season, I would much rather be sellers, than buyers at the deadline. Our farm systerm isn’t great, and I would rather get solid prospects at the deadline, than let Bautista, Edwin, and more, go in free agency, and only get a compensation draft pick for each player who leaves. After this season the Jays are not contenders, and I don’t think it makes sense to contend now, with the future of this team being in jeopardy. I would be happy if we traded Bautista for Phil Bickford, Chris shaw, or two lower level prospects from the Giants.

As soon as I read this article I thought Red Sox fans would reject any trade for Teheran for any of their prospects. I don’t blame them. Boston has a great eye for talent, develops players and they excel yet they badly need pitching to win it all. That wouls cost prospects, not named Moncada.

Why the Cubs would have interest in Bautista makes zero sense. He’s a rental….. they have plenty of OFers. Why trade away valuable trade chips for a fucking rental who IMO isn’t all that great. Hey he can hit HRs…… so can Rizzo, Bryant, Fowler, Zobrist, Soler, Baez, etc. Cubs have plenty of power.

Teheran’s trade value is whatever the Braves would accept in order to move him. It’s clear they don’t need or want to, so saying he isn’t worth Moncada is silly. They wouldn’t take less, so that’s what the price is. I wouldn’t be surprised if Coppy tries to tag on Olivera in any Teheran trade. If he goes anywhere, it will be in the offseason, when the Cashners of the world are asking for $120mil. See how quick your team parts with a beloved prospect then.

Overrated prospects..period..Teheran has a proven track record..BTW..he never once touched 98mph in any of your delusions..I forget did Maddux throw 98 or just hit all the corners and change speeds brilliantly..he’s noMaddux but he’s worth two of your top4 any day of the week..and at the moment looks like Cy Young compared to Price or your other options
