While Padres righty Tyson Ross is progressing through his throwing program, he is not expected to make it back until after the All-Star game, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets. The expectation is that Ross will begin throwing bullpens in a few weeks, and his timeline should gain more clarity once he reaches the mound. A return in mid-July could in theory put him in play at the trade deadline, but it seems increasingly likely that Ross won’t be shopped until after the season.
Here are a few more injury notes from around the game:
- Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will forego surgery on his right knee in hopes that he’ll be game-ready in three weeks’ time, as Roger Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports. That doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll be expected at the major league level at that point, as the length of his layoff could require at least a brief rehab stint. The struggling veteran has already been placed on the 15-day DL after being diagnosed with a cartilage tear.
- Indians righty Danny Salazar will miss his next start due to shoulder fatigue, the club announced. It seems that the hope is it won’t be much more than that, as he’d likely be placed on the DL to free a roster spot otherwise. Salazar’s status remains worth watching, however. The 26-year-old has been outstanding in his first 11 starts. Cleveland will go to Cody Anderson for the spot start. While he’s struggled at times this year in the majors, Anderson has dominated in three Triple-A starts and is as good an insurance policy as you’ll find around the game.
- The Cubs had to pull outfielder Jorge Soler from tonight’s action due to a hamstring injury, as Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He’s headed in for an MRI tomorrow, but it seems as if a DL stint could be in his future. Veteran minor-leaguer Matt Murton could get consideration if that proves necessary, but skipper Joe Maddon also suggested that prospect Albert Almora could receive consideration.
- Meanwhile, the Angels continue to sort through a host of pitching ailments, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. Of immediate concern, set-up man Joe Smith is hoping to stave off a trip to the DL with a hamstring injury. Starters Tyler Skaggs and C.J. Wilson are both in different stages of the rehab process. The former is expected to head out on a rehab assignment after a five-inning extended spring appearance tomorrow. And the latter hopes to re-start a throwing program this week.
- The Angels are also waiting for some position players, as Fletcher further covers. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons (thumb surgery) could return to the majors as soon as Friday; outfielder Daniel Nava (groin) has only just returned to baseball activities; and catcher Geovany Soto (knee surgery) is throwing but has yet to hit or get into the crouch.

It’s been a good run Tex but you need to walk away
Vedder80
Why? To save the team money that they agreed to pay him?

breaking down too much and getting old. It happens to everyone his age. Bring up the young pups and let them play

He doesn’t need to walk away. He’s getting paid to play a game, the Yankees will have to push him out the door if they think they have better options(sadly, they don’t)

Its been so much fun watching Tex play for my division rival yankees over the years. I was really hoping he’d have a healthy season and break out. Hes done so much and now with how everything has gone, people seemingly want him gone.. Tough end for sure.
Maybe he needs to take a page out of joeybats book with extreme diet/fitness/conditioning management? Jose quit all red meat as he believes was the cause of his hip/shoulder inflammation a couple years ago.

So now they report the whole story. About 15 minutes ago they said Almora will likely be the guy the Cubs call up if/when they put Soler on the DL. Now it turns out his name was just mentioned by Maddon. The move that makes the most sense is moving Bryant to LF full time while Soler is out and have Baez and La Stella take turns at 3B……. and calling up Murton as what would be their 5th OFer. Or they could put Zobrist out there full time and use Baez and La Stella at 2B. Calling up Almora now when IMO he isn’t ready is just dumb. I just left a LONG post in the original Soler news on this site that I would actually like to see them call up Vogelbach, who is essentially a Schwarber clone who doesn’t get the hype Schwarber did. He has been in the system longer so I guess Schwarber would be a Vogelbach clone. They both have the same build and they have nearly identical swings. Vogelbach has excellent plate discipline and over the course of his minor league career has walked almost as much as he has struck out. His power potential is starting to show its face this year in triple A and has 9 HRs in 53 games. That would be 3rd most on the ML roster behind Rizzo and Bryant. Only reason IMO he hasn’t gotten major hype or media coverage like other Cub prospects is because he is blocked by Rizzo at 1B. But IMO if Schwarber who never played LF before he played 36 games there in 2014 in the minors and had his trial by error period at the ML level last year…….. why not give Vogelbach the same shot? Especially if he hits as well as he has in the minors which I think will translate to the ML level. If they don’t call him up at least this year some time I don’t know why they still have him. How much longer are you going to let him rot in the minors when he has put up about a .290 BA with a .390 OBP in his minors career? The kid has power too. It hasn’t shown that much over the last couple of years, but his 9 in 53 games is pretty solid. I’m not saying he is a potential 40+ HR threat like Schwarber……. but I think 30 HRs if he pans out is definitely in the cards for him. Rizzo hit 87 HRs in 1,693 minor league ABs…… Vogelbach has 69 HRs in 1,681 ABs. Even if he doesn’t hit 30+ at the ML level, 25+ is a likelihood. Couple that with possibly a high average and excellent on base capabilities…….. why isn’t he here already? Would he be a gold glove caliber LFer? No. But was Schwarber? And if he is absolutely appalling in LF the why not try Rizzo out there and have Vogelbach play 1B? Is Rizzo firmly anchored at 1B for some reason? Everyone else on this Cubs team can manage to play multiple positions…. why not Rizzo? Vogelbach has done more than enough to earn his shot…… I say they should give it to him. If after a week Vogelbach is pitiful in LF, move Rizzo out there and put V-bach at 1B. If Rizzo is pitiful out there for a week or so, then send Vogelbach back down I guess…….. or maybe…… MAAAYBE try Vogelbach at 3B and put Bryant out in LF. I think Vogelbach is a diamond in the rough, at the very least offensively. I think his offense would force management to find somewhere to put him just to keep his bat in the lineup…… much like the case they had with Schwarber last year. How much longer can they sit on their hands with Vogelbach? Either give him his shot or trade him away already. Go on youtube and look at Vogebach highlights this year…… then youtube some Schwarber HRs from last year. TELL me they don’t look eerily similar. Same build, same swing, same plate discipline (if not, Vogelbach may be better than Schwarber in this category)……… IMO same potential.
But this scenario will almost certainly not happen. They will likely call Murton up or maybe Almora, and settle for the safe/mediocre route. I think Vogelbach brings way more upside than either of those two. Yay….. Almora is great at fielding…… fielding means nothing if you provide very little offensively. Great, you can prevent runs….. but you can’t produce them. They already have Russell, Baez, and their entire catching position not providing much or at least consistent offense. You could also say their RFer isn’t providing much offensively so far this year either. That’s 3-4 everyday position players or near everyday position players that are mediocre at best on the offensive side of the ball. Why add a 4th or 5th in Almora?

This post was from last night, when Almora had just been mentioned by Maddon. I ran the other post on Almora’s likely promotion based upon reports from this morning.

Woah. Vogelbach is a bat-only player. He’s not even a good first baseman. Scouts have never been high on him. He’s a DH-only type. Rizzo is an excellent first baseman; why on earth would the Cubs move him to left field. Trying Vogelbach at third base would probably be the most hilarious thing ever witnessed on a baseball field.
And preventing a run is just the same as producing one. That’s why teams have pitchers.

Tex still plays a mean first base. He never really got his bat going in New York as I expected seeing him with Texas. I don’t think he’s out of shape and still moves around first well. I think wherever he plays next year he will turn bat around if it’s a pressure of NY issue. If not his broken wrist will have been the end of his career. I hope the world baseball tournament was worth another 2 yrs @20 mil.

I bet money, when the season is done, Ross will have to have TJ surgery….book it.
