AL Trade Notes: Twins, ERod, Red Sox Pitching, Hill

By Jeff Todd | July 9, 2016 at 12:25am CDT

Twins GM Terry Ryan says that his organization had “better be open for business, which we are,” as MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger reports. Minnesota seems ready to market its trade chips, though it’s still unclear how the club will approach the deadline. Its best pieces, as we just covered in MLBTR’s top trade candidate series, include righty Ervin Santana, utilityman Eduardo Nunez, and relievers Fernando Abad and Brandon Kintzler. Ryan says he’s willing to consider any type of prospect in its trade discussions, and noted that the organization “wouldn’t be opposed” to paying down some contractual obligations “if you’re getting a good player back and it takes some money to do it.” He did note, however, that the Twins typically don’t hang onto cash when dealing a player.

Here’s more from the American League:

  • Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski says that he still has hope that Eduardo Rodriguez can contribute to the team this year, as Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. That assessment could well have an impact on the team’s approach to the trade deadline. “If people would be looking to say we’re going to be getting someone more talented than Eduardo Rodriguez, it’s not going to happen,” said Dombrowski. “They’re just not out there. They’re not out there and available. Sometimes you’ve got to fix some things internally. We’ll see what happens.”
  • Regardless of the Red Sox’ views on Rodriguez, the team figures to be in the hunt for at least one rotation arm. As Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports, Boston has been in touch with the Padres, who could market Drew Pomeranz and/or Andrew Cashner (though the latter had a really rough outing tonight). Also, senior VP of baseball ops Frank Wren is said to have watched both Rich Hill of the Athletics and Julio Teheran of the Braves recently.
  • Hill has returned from the DL to rave reviews for the Athletics, and both Drellich and Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle suggest that widespread interest is building in the southpaw. The former cites the Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, and Tigers as organizations that are taking a look at Hill. And Slusser adds yet more teams to the possible mix, listing the Blue Jays, Royals, and Orioles as possible suitors that have been watching him pitch of late. While Hill’s frequent injuries limit his appeal somewhat, there’s an argument to be made that he’s the best pure rental piece available this summer.

Jays don’t need him unless they replace dickey or Stroman struggles. Sanchez is strong, you cant I just toss your ace in the bullpen

Dickeys doing just fine and Stroman has rebounded of late, a starting pitcher upgrade would be for when Sanchez is moved to the bullpen.

Must get Swihart, Moncada, and Benintendi or Devers from Boston or keep Julio Teheran. Better plan is to keep Teheran and go after Matt Moore to give us two great values at the top of the rotation. The Rays will trade for pitching prospects like Sean Newcomb or Koby Allard.

Not really the point. The Braves aren’t going to trade Teheran unless someone obscenely overpays like the Dbacks did for Shelby Miller. Probably even more so, since Teheran is actually good.

I think RSox fans are forgetting how cheap JT deal is for the next 3 years compared to what it costs in FA. Pitching is expensive either money/years or prospects.

In Case you haven’t noticed the Red Sox aren’t worried about money, it’s not really a matter of how good JT is, or how cheap he is, it’s a matter of trading premium prospects, is just not worth it

I don’t know who told you he can pitch in the A.L nevermind the A.L East.
I Rather go for Hill who will be way cheaper and who we can probably sign in the iff season.

Braves say no. The deal, if it ultimately happens, will be one of top 2 (moncada or Benni) one of next two (espi or devers) and two medium prospects like ockimey and chavis/raudes.

Goodness gracious you remain true to form. As usual you are overvaluing Teheran and asking for far too much. You basically want two elite prospects (one of Moncada/Benintendi and one of Espinoza/Devers) and two more “medium prospects ” like Raudes or Ockimey, all for a guy who away from Turner Field or whatever it is isn’t an elite SP. I’m not sure there is a SP in the game worth that package, much less Teheran.

True to form is right — a Red Sox fan who has no idea what he’s talking about. Teheran has a 2.10 ERA on the road this year. If available, he’s also probably the best young pitcher available when considering performance and price. That’s not my opinion — it’s the opinion of the “experts.” It’s all moot because the Braves aren’t going to take prospects for Teheran. And speaking of overvaluing folks, Owens has very little value since he hit AAA last season and couldn’t pitch there or in the majors.

Yea and the Red Sox aren’t giving you those amazing PROSPECTS for a pretty good starter, although one that is nowhere near worth 2 Top 20 prospects. Every single Braves fan thinks Teheran is worth the moon because they got ridiculously overpaid for Miller. Guess what-it isn’t gonna happen and if the Braves won’t move him unless they get an overpay then they can keep him. Other SPs on the market who could be had cheaper and put up similar production

How did that work out for you all last year when Boston reportedly wouldn’t include Swihart in the Hamels trade? Hamels is now an All-star for Texas and when Swihart wasn’t on the DL he was hitting .270 in the bigs and his value declined sharply because of questions about his ability to stick at catcher.

That is a very uneducated comment I don’t think there is any question that Swihart will stick as a catcher I personally don’t think the Sox are going to trade him as they see him as there future catcher. He has a sweet swing and will be above average offensively for sure and the Braves would give up a lot to get him to be there catcher.

Swihart is a throw in player right now.. He will not be a catcher in the bigs on the reg.. He has lost his trade value.. And you opinion means jack.. Prospects will always be traded for MLB guys.. And I honestly hope ATL keeps him.. They have the prospects to get offense and the budget next season!

Swihart is still gonna be a catcher. What are you talking about?
He lost his position only because we have better catchers than him avalible.
He just has to work on his defense as a catcher and game calling.
But that happens to a player who just started catching just the other day.
He didn’t even catch in high school.
          So all this is expected.
And he will be a Catcher in the majors.
He still practices catching before games.
And Sox management still wants to keep him catching also..
They have him in left field just to get his bat in the line up and build value that is all.
By the way Swihart played S.S in high school.
          Where he batted like. 570

Wow, what an amazing guy!! He won’t catch!! Period.. It’s the single hardest position on the field to master! Also the hardest on the body! They don’t move good catcher to the outfield unless they know they won’t be long term catchers! Also don’t talk about guys high school stats and what position they played, seriously almost all major leaguers played SS and Pitched in high school! Lol.. And I would imagine beside pitchers most minor leaguers hit .500 in high school!

        I don’t know about Swihart.
But for them others you mention they all have a good chance to make it to the Hof as you say.
Same was said about Bogaerts,Betts and Jbj Sherlock!!
        Who’s laughing now Einstein?
        Your comment is really dumb.
Because don’t no-one knows how them players are gonna turn out.
Who are you to say none of them will make it to Hall of fame?
I know this. None of them are worth losing over a N.L pitcher who gets a free out every 9 batters.
The A.L East is a different animal.
They can keep Teharen we don’t want him. SORRY!!.
But they sure want our players though!!
The future bums you speak about..
        How dumb are you? VERY!!

Post season flops, really?? A team with an average age of like 25 advances to the NLCS in their 1st year/partial year playing together and it’s a post season flop AGAIN?? I’m not sure what happens this year or in the years to come with this team bit I like our chances to hopefully do something. And really a braves fan talking about post season flops?? Were you alive in the 90s??

More likely Sox go for Rich Hill. A crazy idea would be Earvin Santana 47 MM left on a bad contract as the 4th starter & Nolasco 19 MM left on a worse contract as a 5th starter –he’s been terrible but still better than Sullivan or Bucholtz for Rusney Castillo 51 MM owed, through 2020, Bucholtz 6 MM owed and a 2d tier prospect. Castillo is a very good defender and the Twins can put him in RF and see if he can become more consistent with regular playing time that he never got in Boston. The Twins save 9MM. The Sox can afford to eat Nolascos $$ once they find someone better.
