Latest On Yasiel Puig

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | July 31, 2016 at 8:12pm CDT

The Dodgers are “still trying to move” outfielder Yasiel Puig, tweets Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Puig’s name has popped up in trade rumors lately — most recently surfacing in rumors involving Reds outfielder Jay Bruce.

Puig, as Heyman points out, has seen his overall offensive output decline in each of his four Major League seasons. Now 25 years of age, Puig burst onto the scene in 2013 at the age of 22 with a scintillating .319/.391/.534 slash in 104 games. That was good for an OPS+ of 159, but his OPS+ dipped to 145 in 2014, 110 in 2015 and just 89 in 2016, marking the first season of his career in which he’s actually been a below-average contributor. Puig still draws positive marks from defensive metrics like Ultimate Zone Rating and Defensive Runs Saved, but he no longer looks like the bargain he did during the first two seasons of his career.

Signed to a seven-year, $42MM contract out of Cuba prior to the 2012 season, Puig’s deal allows him to opt into arbitration upon accruing three years of Major League service, which he’s done this year. He’s slated to earn $6.5MM in 2017 and $7.5MM in 2018, but he could stand to earn more via the arbitration process, so he could very well go that route. The three remaining years on Puig’s deal could make him an appealing option for both contenders and rebuilding clubs, although the fact that those three years come at an escalating salary makes it more difficult to ask a team to surrender high-quality talent in return.

All that being said, it remains largely unknown at this point whether there’s significant interest on the market in a player who has had his ups and downs both on and off the field. Heyman notes on Twitter that the Mets, who are among the clubs rumored to be looking at bats, don’t have any interest in Puig. While other contending organizations may have different views of his potential to contribute in 2016 — it’s always tough to know a given team’s front office sees in a player — we certainly haven’t heard rumors of any particular pursuer.

The smart money, perhaps, is on a club that doesn’t have an immediate need for production taking a chance on Puig returning to his established ceiling. Doing so probably means taking on at least some of the remaining financial commitments, which is certainly a deterrent, but it’s possible to imagine a higher-dollar veteran being moved to facilitate a deal. That, presumably, was part of the general thrust of the chatter relating to Bruce. It’s never wise to rule out the creative machinations of the L.A. front office, which has engineered various complicated scenarios in recent years. Unless and until we learn of interest from another team, though, it’s tough to guess at what kind of arrangement might be concocted to lead to a trade of the enigmatic Puig.

Kemp traded to AL club in offseason. IMO, Smith needs to take it easy the rest of the year.

Inciarte and Mallex can play all three spots. Quite frankly, Ender’s bat has been a disappointment thus far and while he’s good enough to start, he hasn’t hit well enough to not play the hotter bat between Inciarte and Mallex.

Why in the world would the Reds want Markakis?

They would be trading for Markakis the same way the Braves traded for Aybar this offseason, except Markakis is still solid enough to warrant regular at bats. Atlanta kicks in, say, 5 million of the 22 million owed to Markakis the next two years and Reds have someone they can play in right field.

Whoa partner. I can see the three-way but the Braves can’t take that kind of pounding. I could see Markakis (equivalent to Puig and less trouble) plus a reliever or prospect. Say Markakis and Krol, Cervenka or Withrow (Previous Dodger). Could also go for Markakis plus Whalen, Gant, Banuelos or Bird.

The ding on Puig is not his ability, or even his discipline (which has improved noticeably), it’s his recurring hamstring injuries. This is the apparent source of his decreased offensive output and has to be the biggest red flag for any potential suitor.

Every fan of a team wanting Puig should read this. He’s actually not even much of a diva anymore. He really was never much of a problem, it was just him and Mattingly didn’t get alone.

It’s the injuries, most notably the hamstrings holding him back.

You guys absolutely nailed it. There’s never really been anything substantial to show that Puig is a real issue in the clubhouse – it’s all ceased and reporters have moved on to the next flavor of the month.

Even when he’s not on the DL – the hamstrings have to be having an effect on his play.

You got a link? I know Greinke threw his luggage on the streets, but again, that was 2-3 years when Mattingly was there and he had no support. The team is a little different than it was than, which was full of vets.

It’s tough to to think that he just stopped hitting at of a sudden at age 25. Hell, even with the down year .5 he still has a career 132 wRC+

Dodgers ideally want Bruce (all bat, no defense-similar to Beltran), Gamel gives them a guy with some control. Dodgers have all the money in the world it seems, Ellsbury is still an above average bat. That’s my rationale for either scenario, for what it’s worth. Thoughts?

And what is your fascination for Linda anyway? Have a thing for 4-5 starters or something?

I have a soft spot for McCann also but trading for him would be a bad idea right now

I think best trade for McCann is if Yanks pay half. He is still top 7 C in most offensive categories (drop off from 4 to 7 in BA is dramatic though). 20HR and 60-70 RBIs is worth $8.5 for his leadership.

I say the jays trade Saunders for him if they can’t resign Saunders. By now the should at the very least have an idea if wat Saunders wants 45-50 over 3 is fine anymore c if u can trade him for puig at least we will have an awesome defensive out field and a chance at 50 dingers between Upton/pillar/puig with 30+SB from the first 2. Out of the 3 big FA’s we have let joey bats go sign Edwin for sure if not Saunders then. Pompey becomes our 4th out fielder he cansteal 20+ not much pop from him maybe 10 hr at best but he’s hitting over .280 last I checked in the off season focus on signing donaldson for 5-7 years 20+ I would easily c. Keep in mind trying to keep Edwin bats and Saunders means we won’t b able to keep donaldson stroman and Sanchez in the long run. A martin trade for lucroy other prices involved might be a good ideas also I love martin but he makes about 20 mill how many 20mill guys can u have on a 140-160 payroll…….. Why would you trade Saunders when he’s having a great yr and a reason for why you’re in the wildcard/AL East race? You’re right on the expected market salary. Realistically, you’d have to pay that for him. However, you can give him a QO and get draft pick compensation for him. Huge risk to trade him because you’re trying to win now.

Yasiel Puig might be a good fit for the White Sox who appear to be in their customary retool mode once again. The White Sox have had success with Cuban born players dating back to when Minnie Minosa was a star player on many of those “Go-Go” teams in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Jose Abreu is their latest Cuban star and seems in need of a boost with his hitting of late, something that Puig might provide alongside him in the middle of an anemic White Sox batting order.

Acquiring Puig could be an especially worthwhile risk if bench coach Rick Renteria was to replace Robin Ventura as manager. Renteria speaks fluent Spanish and has been an excellent developer of Latino players throughout his professional coaching and managing career. He was credited with Starlin Castro’s turn around as Cub manager in 2014, as well as struggling first baseman Anthony Rizzo’s. Renteria would likely still be at the helm on the North Side if not for the unexpected availability of Joe Maddon at that conclusion of that season. Hopefully he will get another opportunity to manage in Chicago on the South Side.

Puigs situation is like starlin Castro a change if scenery will help him.

        A) What about Castro’s numbers have shown anything has helped?

        B) Castro’s decline wasn’t due to nagging injuries, he just doesn’t hit. Puig’s hammies explode at random.

        C) Should the Dodgers care what a change of scenery does? They need corner OF help. Hes a corner OF. Unless they can improve in some way, why even trade him?

Exactly. Puig’s defensive abilities alone are very difficult if not impossible to duplicate, and nobody I’ve heard proposed to replace him in RF offers such a large offensive upgrade that it offsets the loss on the defense side. Bruce sure doesn’t do it. But for all we know they are thinking Toles is his replacement.

Would a straight trade of Melky Cabrera for Puig solve the Dodgers corner OF dilemma?

          And Jay Bruce would?

I’d be inclined to take switch-hitting Melky Cabrera and his .312/.359/.473 slash over Bruce’s .265/.316/.559 metric. Speaking of which, Cabrera has also posted a 1.8 WAR thus far in 2016 including a 2.3 oWAR compared to Bruce’s 0.7 WAR and 2.1 oWAR. Neither are Gold Glove candidates in the OF but Cabrera still bests Bruce in the dWAR department, significantly so. Cabrera doesn’t possess Bruce’s power but he is a solid contact hitter who rarely strikes out, the antithesis of Bruce at the plate.

Did I mention that Cabrera is also clutch?

That both have similar remaining dollars on their contracts and team control through 2017 with Bruce’s team option being exercised following the 2016 season, as expected?

Puig, De Leon, Verdugo, Holmes and Barnes for Sonny Gray, Reddick and Resypnski.

Actually one of the first proposals that makes sense. Dodgers get an OF to replace Puig for the season, get a solid arm for the rotation

Also a proposal that has not been speculated on by any reporter with only hours left before the trade deadline. Anything is possible with Billy Beane but time is running out, especially with a rental like Josh Reddick involved. None of these players will pass through August waivers either.

How often does a player of his caliber ever truly stop hitting at age 25, without being injured? Obviously teams learn to exploit your weakness, but if the hamstring is really the main problem here I’d think a lot of teams would be interested. He could definitely turn back into his old self, especially with a change of scenery. Best case you could flip him if he has a good year, and worst case it’s a wash. Worth a shot for non-competing teams I’d think. Heck with that arm turn him into another Chapman on the mound lol

That’s the dumbest trade in the history of trades. Ericka aybar isn’t even average. He’s the same exact player cody Ross is. He’s pest so in no bids he’s the most dangerous hitter. The hardest ball he would hit would be a weak grounder that doesn’t make it to the dirt and the infield is back. Why would L.A. trade for a SS with no where to play with Corey Seager at short?
