MLB Announces Suspensions For Harper, Strickland

By Jeff Todd | May 31, 2017 at 1:58pm CDT

TODAY: Harper’s ban was knocked down to three days upon appeal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.

YESTERDAY: Following last night’s brawl, Major League Baseball has announced suspensions for Giants righty Hunter Strickland and Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. As Joel Sherman of the New York Post first tweeted, Strickland will receive a six-game ban, while Harper will miss four contests.

Both players have appealed their sentences. They’ll also each pay undisclosed fines, per the league announcement.

The fracas occurred when Strickland plunked Harper in the hip in the first pitch of his plate appearance. The latter charged the mound, with both players landing punches before things were broken up.

While the two hadn’t even squared off in years, the last time they did it was under dramatic circumstances. Harper, of course, swatted two long home runs off of Strickland in the 2014 NLDS.

While Strickland did not admit to any intent after the game, the commissioner’s office nevertheless found that he had intentionally struck Harper with the pitch. Per the league’s announcement, his actions were responsible for “inciting the bench-clearing incident and fighting.” As for Harper, one of the game’s most visible players, the ban was announced for “charging the mound, throwing his helmet and fighting.”

While Harper will officially sit for less games, the punishment will hurt the Nats more than it does the Giants. The former will lose a fair bit of production from one of the game’s best hitters, while the latter will miss out on only a few innings from a quality reliever. That imbalance is ripe for some criticism, though it’s also something of a matter of perspective. If the punishment is intended primarily for the player rather than the team, then perhaps it’s not as skewed as it might otherwise appear. The bigger question, perhaps, is whether suspensions of this length provide sufficient deterrent value at all.

“Charging the mound, throwing his helmet, and fighting.”

Apparently MLB has a loose definition of the word “throw”

Bat swings slower than 98 mph, so why is the bat considered worse than the ball?

A fly could hit you at 140 mph… take a bat swing at “swinging bunt” speed of say, 30 mph. Which would hurt more? Mass effect.

Why would a bat be considered more of a weapon than a hard object being thrown 100 mph? I believe both could kill hitting in head. Both “weapons” have to be accelerated and directed at somebody, by somebody(other than a pitching machine I guess). Everybody would want a guy arrested that brought a bat to mound and whacked pitcher but it’s different with 100 mph hard ball with accuracy. I use the term weapons loosely and have no problem with it being part of the game but think it’s ridiculous that people are talking weapons. Just want to know why either object is considered differently when used as a “weapon”. Maybe they should make it a rule that after batter is hit and before he takes base the pitcher stands on plate and batter gets one shot at him from the mound. That would make it interesting!

Yeah, I never really got the impression he was either. It appeared as if he was debating about it for a long time as he was going out in anger. When he got out to the mound he still wasn’t totally decided till the last second and then purposely threw it to the side in extreme anger.

LOL he could just could have horrible aim too.

I agree. Speed doesn’t kill. Momentum (speed x mass) kills. Bat has more mass than a baseball. At the same speed, a bat does more damage. That’s why knee breaker criminal enforcers use bats instead of baseballs on their prey.

A baseball thrown 98 mph is a deadly weapon. Throwing at someones hip is not cause to go out and kill the pitcher.

Strickland genuinely deserves more for getting revenge over something that happened 3 years ago, especially since the Giants WON THE WORLD SERIES THAT YEAR, he was just being a child and Harper had complete right to rush him and actually land a shot, because Strickland only landed slaps.

I’m not going to engage in any debate on this, but I feel compelled to point out that there are precisely zero cases where MLB issued a DV-related punishment where the player was “proven innocent.” There are reasonable discussions to be had about when it’s appropriate for the league to punish despite a lack of [evidence or arrest or prosecution or conviction or what have you], but you can’t start with that sort of statement.

It was a joke, but still think about this:

DUI case relates suspensions aren’t handed out until after the case has concluded but DV suspensions are issued immediately, regardless of the judicial outcome.

Punishment was not arrived at in the DV cases until the judicial process was complete — every time except for Olivera, I believe. (He’s also the only one who was ultimately convicted of a criminal offense.) It took several months in many cases. Also, all of them were agreed upon by the player, his agent, and the union.

As stated in the post, this was the first time they had faced one another since. It is indeed easy to assume intention, but in this case I haven’t seen a single person (excepting Strickland) explain it any other way. The circumstantial evidence (and whatever else they knew) was evidently enough for the league.

In a nutshell you see what’s wrong with the system. Bring in hard throwing situational relief pitcher who averages less than one inning per appearance, let him throw at the other team’s star, and then mete out punishments that are grossly disproportional in actual impact. Strickland and his team loses maybe one to two IP. Harper loses 20-24 PA. And Harper gets paid at 24 times the rate of Strickland, and so his financial penalty is 16 times more than Strickland’s. This one is like a hockey game where they send the goon out.

Surprised no other fines were issued but happy to see that MLB didn’t go crazy suspending a bunch of guys for what is and always should be part of the game. I also liked to see that Strickland didn’t even get support from his catcher. Fight his own battle, it wasn’t a team problem. I didn’t understand anything about the helmet toss. Seemed a bit much, at least throw it into crowd for souvenir or at somebody running in for fight. Bruce B’s interview was classic, only thing he could say was about Harpers helmet toss. I’m still laughing.

Right. Was a play on how ridiculous his helmet toss was. He gave it the side arm sling right into the ground. Was like a kid on the playground. Plus if he would have frisbee tossed it into the crowd he may have not got caught in the kisser upon arrival.

As was suggested by Wilbon, Harper went out with the intent to throw the helmet, but thought better of it at the last second, I watched the replay after hearing that and I can buy that explanation.

    1. hunter take one step to the right
    2. do a drop toe hold on bryce
    3. lock in a kurt angle ankle lock all the while screaming maniacally to the sky

either that or pull out ‘el socko’ and go mankind all over bryce…

Batters who strike out don’t get to hit the pitcher in the butt with a bat. If pitchers want to hit batters who hit homers they ought to pay for it. You can’t get away with cheap shots in hockey because some guy on the fourth line is going to smear your entrails all over the glass. It’s ridiculous to me that anyone would think it’s right to pelt guys with 98 mph pitches and hide behind your teammates running out of the dugout. Don’t hit a guy if you’re not willing to tangle with him one on one.

How does anybody actually think Harper is in the wrong here? God forbid he stands up for himself. Hell, buster posey didn’t even stand up for his pitcher, I think that speaks volumes to what he thought of stricklands moronic actions. Get better hunter and stop giving up home runs, or just stop playing so you don’t get so butt hurt. Baseballs unwritten rules need to be shot into the sun asap

How often do we see a baseball brawl? Not very often. How often do players get hit by a pitch. Quite often. Harper should’ve been a man and just took his base. Anthony Rizzo seems to always lead the league in getting hit and how many times has he charged the mound? Zero. Harper has been hit once this year and as you know he charged the mound.

True, but how can Harper know instantly in that moment that it was intentional. Strickland has had control issues in the past. I just feel the suspension of Harper should have been longer considering he charged the mound instead of going to first like a man

Never punched someone for talking crap? So now imagine getting hit by a 98 Mph fb on purpose (because it looks like it was)… I have been hit by 90+… it isnt fun.

And a side note, if this was a batter for batter plunking, you just move on (unless its up near the head) it is just part of the territory being the best hitter on the team.

I’m sure quite a few of Rizzos are intentional. He’s a pretty damn good ballplayer and I’m sure a lot of pitchers take issue with him standing so close to the plate, albeit legally.

Even Kris Bryant. He hit 2 HR in his first two AB of a game last week. He was then HBP on the first pitch of each of the next two AB. Didn’t even hesitate to take his base with class.

I know this is probably unpopular opinion, and I’m not defending Strickland, however, whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? They didn’t even spend 1 day determining if there was actually intent, it really could have been a slip of the hand. But everyone loves Harper, therefore it’s easy to say “oh it’s intentional due to a two+ year old grudge”. And harper only getting 4 is garbage, there was way more hate coming out of harper, had he not failed completely, there was absolutely intent behind throwing his helmet at Strickland. Then the “fight”, I think they’re equally at fault, if you can really prove Strickland did it on purpose. And I mean like proof, not “look at the clip, its clear,” regardless of what you might think, that isn’t proof.

Hahahaha. In what world are you living in where “everyone loves Harper”? Read the comments on any article about him from any non-Nationals site, and I guarantee you more people are bashing him than loving him in 99% of them. This is the only comment section I’ve read on this site where it seems more people are on Harper’s side. That should show you how big of an idiot Strickland was/is in this situation.

Innocent until proven guilty is a tenet of the criminal justice system. This is quite a different situation. Also, there is an appeals process available. To the question of proof, we don’t know what the commissioner’s office considered here, but it’s possible they had more than we’re aware of and also that they drew together and analyzed evidence of a more circumstantial nature.

“Innocent until proven guilty” applies in the court of law, not in private enterprise.

At best, Strickland was operating recklessly and endangering one of the most valuable assets in his field, try doing that at your job and see what happens. At worst, he was intentonally trying to harm another member of his own union on the job.

The suspensions are justified (if not light). Move along.

As a Giant’s fan, I have no doubt that Harper was hit intentionally. And, I think the suspensions are fair, since as bad as intentionally hitting a guy in the hip with a fastball is, charging the mound is more egregious. I understand it; Harper was understandably pissed, but guys get hit intentionally all the time and don’t charge the mound. Harper should have just taken his base with Strickland ejected, and a suspension of a game or 3.

You may be right, but if so, it’s a problem. If MLB determined that Strickland hit Harper with intent, wouldn’t they have come to the same conclusion had Harper not charged the mound? IIRC pitchers have been suspended without the batter charging the mound.

This is a joke. MLB is making a huge issue about suspending players who initiate fights. If Harper brushes it off and goes to first nothing happens, but he points the bat at him, chucks his helmet, and charges the mound and actually starts the fight. Don’t give me wrong, both players deserve to be suspended, but where did Strickland throw the ball? At his thigh, not his head. Honestly, how could you say it was intentional immediately when the pitch was thrown. For all Harper knows the pitch slipped. The only reason Harper’s suspension is for 4 games is because now that Mike Trout is injured, Harper is the best player in baseball when he wants to be. And the saddest thing of it all is that Harper had taught all of the young viewers that it is alright to not only throw punches, but their own helmet and most likely only receive a 2 game suspension after appealing.

Harper still doesn’t need to charge the mound. If he just acts like a man and goes to first, Strickland gets suspended maybe 1-2 games and he gets nothing. Also, as Harper is awful at throwing helmets he wound up to throw it and completely missed.

Strickland should get the brunt of this because throwing at a player is no worse than a player throwing his helmet at another player.

The idea that it’s somehow acceptable to hurl a 98 mph, small, hard object at a person from 60 feet away without them knowing is unbelievable. Get that out of the game. It’s not welcomed.

MLB needs to seriously step in on this stuff. Harper 10, Strickland 25, and have that the deal for future situations like this.

Intentionally throw at a player, auto 10+ games. Manager and PC a game each (send the message), and if a player crosses that line into the field at a player, it’s 10 games.

Because it’s 2017 and by now we should realize throwing a hard ball at someone at 90 mph because they hit home runs off you two years ago is ridiculously stupid.

And also players get hit when pitchers aren’t even trying. There’s no possible way to throw a major league fastball at someone safely.
