Clayton Kershaw Likely Out Four To Six Weeks

By Mark Polishuk | July 24, 2017 at 12:24pm CDT

July 24: The initial prognosis on Kershaw is that he’ll be sidelined for the next four to six weeks, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). He still is set to receive another opinion before a final determination is made.

While that’s obviously a disheartening development for the Dodgers, that timeline would still give Kershaw time to return and get back up to full strength well in advance of the postseason. And, with a 10.5-game lead on the NL West, the Dodgers can weather the storm even without Kershaw for a month or a bit more.

July 23: Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw exited today’s game in the second inning due to lower back tightness, and manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group) that Kershaw’s issue “is a DL situation.”

Despite the likely DL placement, Roberts felt this injury wasn’t similar to the herniated disk that cost Kershaw over two months of the 2016 season.  This bout of back tightness didn’t involve any shooting pains in Kershaw’s leg, for instance, as Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times notes (Twitter links).  More information will be known tomorrow when Kershaw is examined by the Dodgers’ team doctor.

Given Kershaw’s past history with back problems, one can’t fault the team for being as careful as possible with their superstar left-hander, even if this DL stint ends up ultimately being precautionary in nature.  With the best record in baseball and a 10.5-game lead in the NL West, the Dodgers can afford to give Kershaw perhaps even more time than required to fully heal up.

This being said, another DL placement due to a back problem is an ominous sign for both the team and the player.  Despite that large lead, the Dodgers obviously need Kershaw to make a World Series run, and an extended absence for their ace could have a big impact on the team’s deadline plans.  L.A. has mostly been linked to bullpen upgrades on the rumor mill, though the team has been exploring all options, including checking in on starters like Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander.

The Dodgers have enjoyed great success from their rotation and team as a whole despite a staggering number of injuries.  As MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick tweets, Kershaw would be the 24th different player the Dodgers have placed on the disabled list this season.  That list includes all five members of their current rotation (Kershaw, Alex Wood, Rich Hill, Kenta Maeda and Brandon McCarthy, who is about to begin another DL stint), as well as Scott Kazmir and Hyun-Jin Ryu, who also currently sidelined.  If L.A. was looking at rotation help even before Kershaw’s injury, the search will only intensify, possibly even towards a headline name like Darvish.

Kershaw is enjoying yet another tremendous season, with a 2.04 ERA, 10.7 K/9, 1.53 BB/9 and 47.4% grounder rate over 141 1/3 innings.  One minor wrinkle is that Kershaw’s 15.7% home run rate is over twice his career average, plus he is getting more BABIP (.251) and strand rate (90.2%) luck than usual, which is why his ERA predictors (2.94 FIP, 2.73 xFIP) are significantly above his real-world ERA.  Of course, these numbers are still pretty outstanding, which says something about Kershaw’s body of work that 2017 could technically be considered something of “a down year” by his standards.

It shouldn’t. Unless the injury lingers on the most he’ll miss is two starts.

It very well could. Even without the DL Scherzer is making quite a case. Now with missing 2 starts and possibly more? I’d say it’s Scherzer’s to lose right now.

I don’t understand why people continue to assume that 10-day DL means you’ll only miss 10 days.

There are only two options: 10-day DL and 60-day DL. If you’re not going to be missing 60 days, then your only option is 10-day, which can be anywhere between 10 and 60 days or even more.

Even so jackblue, you smartly covered your a** when you said “Unless the injury lingers…” No need to defend yourself bud!
Even with the limited information we were initially given yesterday suggesting it was only a precautionary minor 10 day DL stint

It fooled a lot of us and made us believe his injury was less serious than it is

          Get well soon Kershaw!

This type of injury cost him quite a bit of time last year and pretty much derailed the likes of Larry Bird and Don Mattingly.

You do realize that there are no minor leagues in September when he returns and somehow he will need a minimum of 2-3 starts to get back up to speed? He went for a 2nd opinion today and the doctor said 6-8 weeks, which is now the official time table for his return. If he comes back mid-September, 6 weeks from now, he might be available to start a game in early October. He is essentially gone for the season.

I never said I want it to happen, but when you put that much stress on your body for almost 10 years now it’s going to break down. I personally think he is one of, if not the most dominant pitcher of all time. But he’s not going to last forever like you may think.

If the San Diego Padres saw you write this comment they would renounce your fandom, and end ties with you because this type of classless behavior (wishing injury or harm on anyone) is frowned upon and does not represent them or their fans (in any way shape or form). It doesn’t even matter the person you’re wishing harm to is arguably the face of baseball in the middle of having a historic season. This transcends baseball.. Why make it personal?

I’m a Yankees fan, Do you think I wish Dustin Pedroia suffers a career ending injury? No. I want him to play for the Red Sox as long as he can, and I want to beat him– at his best..

Agree with you about the trade but Verlander is in the top 25 in quality starts in mlb in a bad half year for him. That’s hardly #4 starter territory.

I get your point, but the Quality Starts stat means that you can, at minimum, pitch to a 4.50 ERA while getting 18 outs and get credit for one. This is about what Verlander has done this year, posting a 4.54 ERA/4.27 FIP, which is a 4 or 5 starter.

That’s not what the Dodgers need. They can probably source a better performance by using Stewart or Stripling so they don’t have to give up prospects and pay 10’s of millions of dollars to get it.

You can also pitch a perfect game and only get credit for one. It works both ways. I did notice all the best pitchers are at the top of the ranking and the worst are at the bottom so it has value.
As for Verlander, he has had three awful, awful starts against the Indians due to control issues which has skewed his averages. He has been very good in his other starts and it seems to be behind him. Earlier in the year when the bullpen was the worst in baseball he stayed in the game too long and got burnt.
I don’t think he should get traded to anyone. The contract is fair and there is no excess value worth giving up prospects. Detroit doesn’t need to shed his contract. There is no reason to sell low.

If JD Martinez can be traded for little more than a bucket of balls, and his contract comes with no strings attached, then there is no reason to expect any team to give up any of their top prospects, especially their #1 prospect, for anyone. Al Avila established the value when he dealt the most valuable player who will change teams this season. A guy like JV, who comes with a big contract and a lot of mileage, isn’t worth a whole heck of a lot in return, even with the Tigers agreeing to eat a large chunk of future salary. So, while it’s possible JV winds up in Dodger blue at some point this season (and he doesn’t need to be a deadline deal because he’ll surely pass through waivers), it’s unlikely they will have to give up more than a fringe prospect or two for him.

JD Martinez has nothing to do with the market for Cy Young caliber pitchers. The compensation will be determined by how far below market value they are being paid. Verlander has little or no excess value therefore the compensation would be very low. That may not be the case for others.

There is no demand for OFs, and all JD brought back on a QO would have been a 4th round pick. Avila may have gotten less for his rental OF than YOU imagined, but all the other GMs who have rental OFs HAVEN’T GOTTEN ANYTHING. How does that fit with your theory? Pay attention to the demand side as well as the supply, and you may show better understanding of the market.

Does nothing but give them rotation depth. Cause you know that rotation doesnt have injury histories or anything. Its a long way from now to October. Kershaw, Hill, McCarthy, Kazmir, etc. At least Chacin and Cahill give you solid production from the 4 and 5 while guys are on the mend.

Oh and Hand improves the pen and Cahill can be shifted to the pen in the playoffs so you really get 2 effective pen pieces come playoff time. Not like the Dodgers need that either.

Everyone- Kershaw is missing a month- don’t lose your heads.
The Dodgers have a firm hold on the NL West and will probably go for a rental to help them get through August. Dodgers don’t seem to willing to include any of the top guys in trade talks. I would guess they go for a dependable innings eater- Jaime Garcia is a name that would come to mind for me.

This injury doesn’t flip the market on its head my any means. Not saying is has no impact at all, but 5 missed starts can be given to a placeholder type guy. Especially with a 10.5 game lead in the West, an offense that’s been on fire and a shutdown bullpen. They’ll be fine.

So much bickering on here about unknowns. The facts say 6-8 weeks. Is it reasonable to come back late September if it is closer to 8 and be ready for playoffs. Seems like this guy never has a real chance in the playoffs. Either he is hurt or his team goes cold at plate. He will go down as the dan Marino of baseball.

I don’t see how the injury changes anything, dodgers likely aren’t going to win the WS if Kershaw doesn’t come back this year no matter who they add. And they’re still the favorite to win it all if he does come back, with or without Darvish or anyone else. The season hinges on getting Kershaw back, not on getting Darvish. If the price is reasonable for Darvish, Gray or even JV (but tigers gotta eat some of that contract) then sure go get them, but if other GMs are making stupid demands then just grab a few bullpen arms for prospects not named Verdugo and Buehler and move on. If we need another impact arm in the rotation why not just call Buehler up for a stretch run? He’s probably got as good a chance to have an effective playoff run before the league gets a book on him as any of the non-Darvish SP options out there. I’m fine with spending some low level high ceiling prospects like Alvarez, but Buehler and Verdugo will be part of the young core as soon as next year they should be untouchable, and if that takes us out of the Darvish/Gray market so be it.
