Red Sox, Mets Discussing Addison Reed Trade

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2017 at 5:33pm CDT

5:32pm: Boston has also “kicked the tires” on Twins righty Brandon Kintzler, per Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press (via Twitter). The interest in Kintzler was noted recently, though it’s notable that the sides are evidently still in touch to some degree with the deadline drawing near. Still, it seems he and others are not the top priority for the Sox.

2:47pm: There’s one other team that is also a “serious suitor” for Reed at this time, tweets Newsday’s Marc Carig. Still, though, nothing is close at present, WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford notes on Twitter.

2:01pm: Earlier this morning, MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal reported that Mets closer Addison Reed was a “focus” for the Red Sox, and there’s increasing talk about Reed potentially heading to Boston in a deal. Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports that talks between the two sides have begun to heat up, though a deal isn’t yet close to finalization. ESPN’s Buster Olney adds that there are “about five” teams left in the running for Reed, though the Red Sox are the only one he specifies by name.

The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, meanwhile, reports that the Sox are focused solely on late-inning relief help at this point. According to Speier, Reed is “at or near the top” of Boston’s wishlist, while deals for left-handers Justin Wilson (Tigers) and Brad Hand (Padres) are unlikely.

The 28-year-old Reed has dominated opposing hitters since donning a Mets jersey in 2015, working to a pristine 2.09 ERA with 9.9 K/9 against 1.5 BB/9 in 142 innings. He’s spent much of the season closing for the Mets with Jeurys Familia unavailable (first due to a suspension, then an injury), but he’d shift into a setup role for Craig Kimbrel were the Sox and Mets to complete a deal. Reed would be complemented by righties Matt Barnes, Heath Hembree and Joe Kelly (who is nearing a return from the disabled list) as well as left-handers Fernando Abad and Robby Scott. A free agent at season’s end, Reed is earning $7.75MM in 2017 and is still owed roughly $2.7MM of that sum through the end of the regular season.

That’s funny, I don’t remember Jason Bay hitting 27 home runs an entire season let alone through July. Hes not a terribly underperforming oft injured overrated choke artist like Bay. Hes having a solid season and his trade value is only hurting because people see the 27 home runs and think that’s all hes good for. Hes hitting 262 with an 851 ops and people act like hes Curtis Granderson hitting 224 whos only good for walks and homers. If no one else wants him ill take him on the mets all day.

Both Bruce and Granderson should have been moved( By Now ) for Possible Pieces of the Future,
If Mets keep Bruce next and he has Down Year they will get a Bag of Balls for an Year older Outfielder !

If the Mets bring Bruce back next year they will earn a booby prize in player development. Needing to justify Bruce’s (and Granderson’s) salary has sorta forced them to mistreat their best young player. A rational actor would not spend ~$18M on Bruce only to have him take playing time away from Conforto.

My guess is that keeping Bruce for this season was a miscalculation based on a misreading of the market for OFers. Doubt they will similarly err next year.

Agreed!! I say resign him after the season. He’s done some damage with no Cespedes.. The Mets would be in even worse shape without him this year.. and they were trying to give him away in the offseason for a 6 pack of beer.. and not even import beer. At the end of the day I will take .260 30+hrs and 100rbis from a corner outfield..

By all reports, there is little or no interest in Bruce at all. Baseball is flush with power hitting outfielders at the moment. I’m sure the Mets are trying to move him, with his FA status pending, but nobody wants/needs him right now.

Your one word comment, “idiot” doesn’t make clear who the alleged idiot is–guessing from Connorsoxfan’s reply that it was directed at him–nor exactly why you believe him to be an idiot. It’s just abusive and wastes the time of everyone who reads it. If you’re gonna be too gosh darned (or something similar) lazy to spell out the basis for your criticism why not be completely lazy and skip the one word ad hominem as well.

Connorsoxfan is to be commended for his peaceful response to your drive-by abuse.

Buster works for ESPN. It is possible that the Red Sox are one the only teams he knows by name. Although I suppose we can safely assume the Yankees are not one of the five, since they would definitely know them too.

They are the CNN of sports. Watch MLB network for real coverage. They even had to buy intentional talk from mlbn just to stay relevant.

Gammon may be getting up there in years but back when our only sports news came from sports reporters, and newspapers that actually were delivered to your doorstep and printed on paper, Gammons Sunday piece on baseball for the Globe was as good as it got! Hmmm, we also has Bob Ryan on hoops, Will McDonough covering football and Leigh Montville doing random features. Hell, even Francis Rosa on hockey and Bud Adams on tennis were at the top of their game. That was one “loaded” Sunday Sports page. So cut poor Pete some slack, it’s almost like watching Ali take on Spinks towards the end. The poor Boston Globe, with all those stupendous beat writers and then, of course, along came that goofy idiotic red headed step child Dan Shaiughnessy and its been also down hill since….

Regardless of the pitching? Come on now. Winning baseball games is about scoring more runs on offense than your pitching and defense give up. If your offense can manage to score a single run you will win if you get shutout pitching.

Yeah but the pitching isn’t good enough to survive on 3 run performances over and over. Nunez and Devers should help, but they still need a big bat if Moreland can’t get back on track to rotate 1B/DH with Hanley. Nunez won’t help with power really, but the hitting and baserunning is good.

I dont know Connor. I usually agree with you but who would you want to give the ball to in the 7th inning of a tie game in Game 7 against the Yanks? Hembree who hasn’t met many inherited base runners he hasn’t invited to score, Barnes who seems to be just fine until he has one of those “Bardesque” outings, Joe “I’ll Make the Cool T Shirts” Kelly? Or maybe Fernando “I only face lefties when we are up or down by a dozen runs” Abad? Seems like the Yankees pen might actually make up for their short shifted starters and what happens if Severino keeps getting better and better and they add a Sonny Gray? I really think DD should go all in (for the third straight year) on a quality 8th inning guy then let them fight it out – I mean like literally, like a steel cage match between Thornburg, Smith and whoever DD can grab – Reed or Wilson or even the Twins guy for set up privileges next season … what do you think the Mets are looking for from the Sox? What is the Mets add in Bruce, who has been playing 1B lately and, despite what the others say in this space, would be a major offensive upgrade over Moreland who is down to 230! Poor Mitch. Didn’t he have like 14 doubles in April and he still hasn’t hit 20 yet? Good glove but can you say “platoon?”

They won’t get 4 prospects for Reed. So don’t hold your breath. And they need help at other positions with their anemic offense. Are you counting on Mr. Tweak playing more than say 110 games next year?

The way I read this is there are about 5 teams involved but the writers are hearing the Red Sox more often than the others. DD is probably pushing and the Mets probably have a couple Sox prospects they have their eye on. Until deals are finalized we all know a lot can change. Usually the connected writers have a pretty good idea of where the smoke is. As an example you would tend to believe the Yankees are the front runner for Sonny Gray.

If it’s 4 prospects 2 or 3 of them will probably be low level because Addison Reed is a 2 month rental. No one is giving up 3 or 4 top prospects. The Red Sox would be idiots to make that deal. They have Hembree, Barnes, Kelly about to come back and a fresh healthy arm in Brandon Workman who has been throwing 95. They all throw 95 with Kelly up to 100. Reed is a stud but you don’t give away to 10 prospects for a 2 month rental.

Depends granted Chapman was a “Big deal” but look at what the Cubs paid for him.
Beltran for Wheeler was another one. Mets gave Fulmer for Cespedes. You never know top prospects do get dealt for a 2 month rental sometimes.

You can’t compare Reed to another of those players. So get closer to the Truth and modify your lofty dreams for one or two and half being low level. Can’t count on any quality in the Sox minor league talent, however Sandy and his dugout cheerleader can really talk it up.

You mean like when he traded Anderson Espinosa who was the Sox top pitching prospect for Drew Pomorantz and now Espinosa is having TJ surgery and Pomorantz is 10-4 w/ 3.59. Looks like a pretty good deal now. I know your talking about Thornberg and Carson Smith but both will be back and hopefully as good as they were. Smith in the next 30 days. Thornberg not until next year.

Sandy if you don’t get a good deal on reed hold on and let him walk. Want a prospect in the top 10

Would love Chavis but it’s a lot for him alone unless Jay bruce is getting included

Why would the sox ever need or want Bruce besides his power? Where do you play him? Look at the money aspect and the redsox hitting the luxury tax. It makes zero sense to add him with our lineup this year. Hanley owed huge money Moreland cheap but not a bench player at 5.5 mil he won’t start in the OF with our core and young doing so well off the bench. We need pitching and a club house leader more then a power bat

Could get both Addison Reed and Jay Bruce and not go over the salary tax threshold this year. I doubt they get Bruce but they could and not go over.

First Duda to Tampa now Reed to the Red Sox. The Mets are so pathetically jealous of big brother.

Need a Bullpen Arm, another starter who ISNT WASHED UP like Foster, AND a big bat. They will maybe get 1 of those 3 and will miss the playoffs Bc of it

Reed they can wait until the last minute. They should really have moved several others (Cabera, Bruce and Grandy) by now, but the cheapsakes won’t pay the remaining salary (even though they’ll end up paying it anyway). Got nothing for Duda as a result. That there’s so little interest in Bruce really shows how cheapened the HR has become. He could finish over 40 HRs is playing a decent RF and nobody wants that?

I think Jay Bruce with Addison Reed would have been perfect for the Red Sox. Remember Mitch Moreland has a broken toe so they could play Hanley at 1B and Bruce could DH. Then when Moreland improves they have a 3 player rotation for 2 spots. Bruce is the power left handed bat the Sox miss when Ortiz retired

Notice that Bruce has been playing first the last couple games since the Mets sent Duda to Tampa? As long as his salary doesnt put us over the Luxury Tax for the third year in a row (causing some huuuuuge penalties), I’m all in favor of getting Bruce with Reed. Not giving up Groome but how bout giving the Mets the 6th and 48th best prospects in all of the minors? Of course, that’s would be Swihart and Henry Owens circa 2015 …

I’d love Reed – his strikeouts to innings pitched are very appealing for a reliever coming into games in the 7th and 8th innings when there are runners on base. Even though I like the young guys. I don’t think there’s a baserunner yet that’s Hembree, Barnes and Kelly feel bad about not letting them make it across the plate. Hey, it’s not like those inherited runners scoring! It’s not like those runs cout against their ERA. Take Joe Kelly for example. Manager Dave kept telling us all about his streak of consecutive scoreless innings when the fact is, about a half dozen runners crossed the plate when Joe “I Make the Really Cool T-Shirts” Kelly was on the mound … Can’t one of you fanatical sabremetricians come up with an accurate formula to value relievers by combining interdicted runs allowed, their own runs allowed, give some factors to strikeouts with men on base, etc. so us ordinary fans who still live by the triple slash line (yes, that’d be batting average, home runs and RBI) have one of your saber numbers to help us value middle relievers?
