Yankees Designate Chris Carter

By Jeff Todd | July 4, 2017 at 4:22pm CDT

The Yankees have again designated first baseman Chris Carter for assignment, per a team announcement. He had previously been outrighted after a stint in DFA limbo, with New York bringing him back up to the big leagues just days later.

This time, 26-year-old Ji-Man Choi has been selected to take Carter’s place. The left-handed hitter has spent the bulk of his career at first base, though he does play some corner outfield. He’ll return to the majors for the first time since a 54-game debut last year with the Angels.

It remains to be seen whether Carter will remain in the organization, but he accepted an outright assignment the last time around. New York has had success in the past utilizing this cycle to rotate through veterans when needed, then keeping them stashed without occupying a 40-man spot. (Remember this?)

First base remains unsettled for the Yankees as the deadline draws near. The unit has performed miserably all year and young players Greg Bird and Tyler Austin are presently stranded on the DL. Choi has earned an opportunity with a strong .289/.371/.505 batting line in his 224 plate appearances at Triple-A, but the expectation remains that the organization will be looking hard for a reliable bat over the coming weeks.

I don’t know his numbers for this season but I do know he is good at hitting home runs so what team should/ would pick him up

He hasn’t even hit he’s this year. Pick him up if you need a strikeout with a man on third and less than 2 outs cause he’s done that all year.

Exactly i think the last Sacrifice fly was May 28 against the As i think he only has about 3 all year long. The team will be ok with all his strikeouts but in situation with 0 or 1 out and man on third and you going to swing at a ball in the dirt or not even make contact with the ball. that’s a problem.

I still thank the Yankees would have won that series either way
But, it could have been 4-1 or 4-2

That check swing was as bad as Matt holiday never touching home in my book
Or the missed called out during the 85 World Series with the cardinals and the royals
Cardinals would have won in 85′

Duda + Reed might return Fowler now that’s Fowler’s injured, but no way the Yanks would give up a healthy Fowler in a trade for those two.

I meant literally looking fantastic – decision making, pitch selection, contact made, etc. Watching him, he looks ready

But as far as the PCL, people really need to stop acting like it is all that extreme. I mean:
          .305/.354/.417/.771
          .302/.367/.457/.824
          .325/.380/.485/.865
That is Smith this year in the PCL and the last two years in Pitchers Leagues. Sure, maybe ~.010 points of BA has been added because of the PCL, and maybe there is about a .015-.020 OPS bump too. But he’s 12th in Avg, 24th in OBP, 28th in OPS as a 22yo in a 26yo League not because of the Leagues Park Factors

I’d settle for a defensive player that hits .240-.250 right now carter hitting .195.

    I could see 3 scenarios

1.) trade for prado, move headley to first… (doesn’t help headley hot and cold too)
2.) trade for Todd Frazier (plays 1st and 3rd)
3.) trade for wil Myers (make him your 1st base man and he gives you option for OF if needed)
    3.)

The difference being: Cashman isn’t desperate to end that pitiful 108 year drought, like Theo “The Boy Genius” was. Cash knows this was destined to be a rebuilding year for Yanks, anyway. If he can add someone at a reasonable price, great. Otherwise, Austin will be back at some point and Cashman can go after Hosmer or another first baseman in the offseason, when more moves to clear dead weight–Ellsbury, maybe Headley–are coming.
Think of THIS year as being very similar to the ’95 team which made the playoffs but AFTERWARDS, Tino, Jeff Nelson, Joe Torre, Girardi and others were added while Tony Fernandez, Mike Stanley and Showalter were shown the door and Donnie Baseball retired.
NEXT YEAR is when the Yankees really challenge. Hal and Cash know this.

Thank you JG, my thoughts exactly. Unless they think they’ll win it all, they’re not wasting trade chips. Those will be spent on a pitcher after the season but it won’t be an overpay because there are so many pitching FAs out there this year.
Plus, they are going under the luxury tax threshold so they’re not going for anyone who has much money or length of contract left…

Why don’t the Yankees just let things play out? Don’t trade you minor leaguers for rentals or players that they will not want next year (headley trade) This problem can be fixed internally I believe. This season was supposed to be a lost season anyway so let’s let the young guys get some mlb experience. Platoon headley and holiday at 1st, bring up andujar, and use one of the outfielders at DH for the games holiday is at first and rotate the outfielders. I want to see Frazier get some more at bats at the top level so I’d keep him up somehow.

To me the biggest issue right now is the Yankees bullpen. If the Yankees are going to finish the year in a playoff spot they need to get a couple more quality relievers. Clippard, Betances, and Chapman all seem to be struggling mightily. If you want to get back on track these guys need to get back on track. If you can add 2 quality arms I think this would take some of the burden off these 3.

It’s about damn time! Carter has been an absolute hole at 1st, both offensively and defensively. The Yankees rank last offensively at 1B in all of MLB, and Carter has played a major role in all of that. Choi might not be the answer, but give him a shot and see what he does. I highly doubt he’s gonna be worse than Carter, both offensively and defensively.
