Adrian Gonzalez’s season and possibly even his long-term playing future have been threatened by his recurring back problems, but the Dodgers first baseman tells Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times that he intends to return to the field in September even if his back is still bothering him. “Put it this way: Even if I’m not quote-unquote 100%, I’m still going to go in September because what I have is what I have,” Gonzalez said. “If it doesn’t get better with all this time off, it’s not going to get better, so I might as well learn to play with medication.” If he isn’t healthy enough for regular play, Gonzalez said he is happy to take a pinch-hitting role or to cede playing time to Cody Bellinger since “I’m just here to win. It’s not about, ‘It’s my position,’ or, ‘It’s his position.’ It’s about winning as a team.” The piece is well worth a full read, as Gonzalez also discusses how his back problems have raised the question of retirement.
Here’s more from around the NL West…
- Outfielder A.J. Pollock has officially returned to action for the Diamondbacks, with the club announcing that he has been activated from the 10-day DL after a lengthy absence owing to a groin strain. Arizona hasn’t encountered any real troubles in his absence, but the return promises to make for an even more compelling roster. The surprising D-Backs not only seem a shoe-in for a Wild Card spot, but currently sit just two-and-a-half games out of the NL West lead.
- Eduardo Nunez didn’t play in a scheduled rehab game on Sunday due to continued discomfort in his ailing hamstring, and the Giants infielder may not return to action until after the All-Star break, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes. Nunez, who has been on the DL since June 24, is perhaps the Giants’ clearest trade chip as the club prepares to be deadline sellers. If he can’t return until after the break, Nunez will have just over two weeks to keep up his solid pre-injury production and prove to interested trade suitors that he is healthy, or else the Giants will have trouble gaining full value in a deal.
- Christian Arroyo suffered a fractured left hand after being hit by a pitch in minor league action on Saturday, and the Giants prospect is in danger of missing the rest of the season, MLB.com’s Chris Haft writes. Manager Bruce Bochy said he was hoping Arroyo would be healthy in time to be a September call-up for the Giants. Arroyo made his big league debut earlier this season and hit just .192/.244/.304 in 135 plate appearances, though San Francisco obviously wants to give one of its most highly-touted young players more experience in the Show. Arroyo’s development has already been stalled by another hand injury in June; in fact, Arroyo’s first game back from that prior injury was Saturday’s contest.
- Padres relievers Craig Stammen and Kirby Yates are under-the-radar candidates to be moved at the deadline, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune write as part of a reader mailbag. Stammen has a 4.53 ERA in 45 2/3 IP, a number that is somewhat inflated by a few bad outings; 10 of Stammen’s 23 earned runs this year came during a three-game stretch in April, plus he allowed a grand slam in his last game. Yates, meanwhile has an outstanding 2.08 ERA, 14.2 K/9 and 5.13 K/BB rate over 26 IP since being claimed off waivers from the Angels in April. Neither pitcher is likely to net the Padres a big return in a trade, though as Lin notes, San Diego has little in the way of healthy trade chips aside from Brad Hand.
- Also from Lin’s mailbag, he reports that star pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza is playing catch but hasn’t yet thrown off a mound. Espinoza has yet to pitch at all this season after suffering forearm tightness in early April, and then additional soreness in May that led to a shutdown. The Padres, as you might expect, are taking it slow with Espinoza’s recovery given his long-term value to the organization. Lin notes that Espinoza might possibly not pitch at all this summer, as it will still be a while before the young righty is ready for game action.

Uh Anderson Espinoza isnt a south paw. baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=esp…

Load the queue with Padres homers suggesting ridiculous hauls they would get for Hand.

several reliever options could be available this deadline. it will be interesting who makes the first big moves and “sets the market”.
Hand/Buchter (SD), Robertson/Kahnle/Jennings/Swarzak (ChW), Blevins/Reed (NYM), Neshek (Phi), Wilson (Det), Madson/Casilla/Doolittle (Oak), McGowan/Ramos (Mia), Wood/Storen (Cin)
I Believe We Can Win
Well considering the past 2 years Hand has:
2016- 89.1 innings 11.18 k/9, 3.63 bb/9, 46.7% gbr in 82 games
LEFT: .124/.221/.200
RIGHT: .233/.310/.379
2017- 43.2 innings, 10.98 k/9, 2.47 bb/9, 50.5% gbr in 39 games
LEFT: .180/.293/.360
RIGHT: .196/.254/.286
He’s under team control for cheap this year and the next 2 years, is effective against R and L batters, and can pitch multiple innings to save bullpens padres should be seeking high compensation for Hand.
Preller doesn’t have to trade Hand. Stammen, Cahill, Chacin, Richard he has to trade cause they’re FA at the end of the year. Hand has 2 more arb years left.
And if Hand finishes the season with 60+ innings producing as he has hes going to demand even more during the off season. He posts back to back 80 inning seasons itll cost a lot more.

Too much weight on Agons back literally his back cant support his gut

You must be a pleasant person with a satisfying life.
dodgerbluebitches
He has lost quite a bit of weight and my bet is he could not only kick your ass, but is also in better shape. Back injuries in baseball are not weight related moron, it’s the constant torque on the back with the swing.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Padres HAVE to trade Stammen cuz of his pending FA status and Espinoza isn’t a southpaw.

Espinoza lol

But Arroyo hit a hr off Kershaw, so he’ll be fine

With Nunez still ailing and Moose more than likely staying put in KC due to their playoff hopes, I think this opens the door for a Boston – Todd Frazier matchup. Possibly Oakland could move Lowrie to Beantown instead but I think the Red Sox will be after a power bat. Frazier has good defense and is a quality baserunner as well
Frazier has stepped his game up lately.

possible packages….???
3B Michael Chavis &, RP Jamie Callahan….
Chavis is Boston’s 3rd best hot corner prospect following the much hyped Devers and also Bobby Dalbec. I could see the Red Sox dealing from the depth they have here in the minors. Also, White Sox could be losing a few relievers this trade deadline (Robertson, possibly Kahnle, Jennings, Swarzak) and have a few with injury questions as well (Jones, Putnam). Callahan would be a nice addition to compete for a spot with Burdi and Clark in spring training 2018.
OR
OF Lorenzo Cedrola, RP Darwinzon Hernandez, & SP Bryan Mata
This package is younger and would need White Sox to like the future projection of the players involved. Cedrola has some nice tools but also little power and unlikely to offer much in the OBP category besides his batting average. Hernandez, a lefty with a solid fastball, has control issues and lacks secondary pitch refinement. Mata is looking good early on, but at 18 yrs old, he is a long way off from contributing to a major league roster. Again, all of these players “could be” quality pieces, but have years before they are to be considered ML ready.

You seem to know about some of the Sox kids.
cedrola saw at Ft Myers last year. Kid has a cannon fro an arm in CF and nice glove to boot from what I saw. 1 throw was from dirt of warning track in straight away CF to 2b in the air and on the money as posted on Soxprospects at the time. Seems to get nice reads on balls hit his way also. I’d like to see them wait on moving him and they have already got him playing in the Sally league this year as a 19YO holding his own with the bat.
Dalbec hit decent at half rookie/halfA lowell last year, but still K’d a bunch of times and is striking out a ton this year, just not hitting at greeneville. Didn’t think was a prospect when drafted and still don’t. Chavis is tho and is finally healthy. Hope they hang onto him and find a position for his power bat.
Cam
Gotta tip your cap to Agon there. He’s pretty much saying, if he has anything left to give, he supports his team getting everything they can out of him before he’s done, however they can. As someone with a shot back myself, I can’t begin to imagine trying to play pro ball in anything less than agony.
GarryHarris
What type of back pain is Adrian Gonzales having? I’ve had a ruptured disk in my back shaved. The pain and weakness was immediately gone and I regretted waiting so long for the procedure. Not all injuries are alike but that type has such a high success rate.
DodgerBlueSince82
Couldn’t agree more! A-Gone has been a model player and teammate since he’s been with the Dodgers. Most veterans wouldn’t be willing to take a back seat to another player (especially saying it publicly) if they were healthy enough to play, Let alone a rookie. Even one playing as well as C Bell. This shows how much he cares about winning and that’s the kind of guy you want on your team.
Assuming he is relatively healthy, A-Gone has been a clutch hitter his whole career. He would be a great PH option in the playoffs. He would also be a great guy to help the younger players in the dugout/clubhouse.
Go Dodgers!!!

Cam has it right…Agon is a classy professional.

Still think Hand makes a ton of sense for the Brewers. Could see something like:
Brand Hand and Jholys Chacin for Isan Diaz and Marcos Diplan. The Brewers get a guy in Hand who gives them a nasty left handed option out of the pen who comes with years of control for a young team who wants controllable assets, along with Chacin who could either slot in the back of the rotation or be a swing man down the stretch. Diaz is blocked by Arcia and is the top 50 prospect people are suggesting the Padres will receive, along with Diplan who Preller’s finger prints are all over having been in the Texas front office when he was signed as an international free agent by them.

deal.

Brewers are gonna fall off. Making a trade like that is dumb.
The cubs on the other hand can trade for Hand it wouldnt cost a top 50 prospect. 2 maybe 3 mid level top 100 prospects. The padres are just not good. It’s a shame wil Myers signed that extension. He could have been a really great asset on a good team.
bleacherbum
Cahill and Yates look like good fits for Boston. Cahill could displace Fister in the rotation and Yates could be a quality addition to add to the bullpen corps to bridge the games to Kimbrel. Yates also comes with a couple more years of control which should be appealing to D.D.
Trevor Cahill and Kirby Yates for Michael Chavis and Trey Ball would help both clubs.
BKG98
Ill send over the paperwork.

That’s great news that AJ is back, and it could not come at a better time. The D-backs could really use AJ against three tough lefties, especially against Kershaw tonight.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Whatever will be will be, but one thing’s for sure, the Padres are going to look a lot different by the time August rolls around.

Just DFA Gonzalez and work out a deal with the Yankees. No guarantee Bellinger is have a repeat year nezt year. Seems like he’s the real deal though.
