6 To 8 Teams Interested In Marcell Ozuna

By Connor Byrne | December 12, 2017 at 10:42am CDT

TODAY: The Rockies and Blue Jays are also among the interested teams, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald (Twitter link).

YESTERDAY, 7:45pm: The Marlins are telling teams Ozuna would be easier to acquire than outfield mate Christian Yelich, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets. That’s not surprising, as the 26-year-old Yelich is controllable by way of a team-friendly contract through 2022 and carries a more consistent track record than Ozuna.

7:01pm: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is drawing interest from six to eight clubs, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports (on Twitter). Along with the Cardinals, whose interest was already known entering Monday, the Giants and Nationals are among the teams in on Ozuna, per Frisaro. The Athletics are also still considering Ozuna, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Slussser first reported their interest in Ozuna in early November.

Two of these clubs – the Cardinals and Giants – have spent a large portion of the offseason engaging with the Marlins about right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, and they even had deals in place to land the 2017 NL MVP. But Stanton nixed those trades before accepting a deal to the Yankees over the weekend, sending the Cards and Giants scrambling for other options. Ozuna makes for an appealing Plan B, then, as he’s coming off a season in which he slashed a career-best .312/.376/.548 with 37 home runs and a 4.8 fWAR over 679 plate appearances.

In terms of production, last year was an outlier for Ozuna relative to the rest of his career – which began when he debuted in 2013 – but he has still accounted for at least 2.5 fWAR in three of four full seasons. At worst, Ozuna seems to be a solid regular, and the 27-year-old doesn’t come with an onerous, Stanton-esque contract. He’s controllable for two more years via arbitration and will earn a projected $10.9MM in 2018. That’s certainly an affordable figure, though it should also help the Marlins land a quality return for him. They’re obviously educated on both the Cardinals’ and Giants’ farm systems thanks to the Stanton talks.

The Nationals, meanwhile, share a division with the Marlins, but that shouldn’t necessarily serve as a deterrent to a payroll-cutting Miami team whose primary goal in an Ozuna trade should be to bolster its weak system. Washington’s prospect pool is only the majors’ 18th best, per Baseball America (the outlet ranks the Cards’ 13th and the Giants’ 27th), but it seems that’s primarily because of a lack of depth. The top of the Nationals’ system is impressive, according to BA, and that could help pave the way for an Ozuna swap.

With the Nationals at risk of losing Bryce Harper to free agency in a year, Ozuna might somewhat help cover for his potential exit in 2019. In the meantime, the Nats could perhaps use a left fielder to complement Harper in right and Adam Eaton in center. They do, however, have other in-house options in Michael A. Taylor and Brian Goodwin. Taylor was particularly strong in 2017, yet the Nats may not be content with him functioning as a regular in 2018, if their interest in Ozuna is any indication.

What more does Mikey T need to do to have the Nats give him the starting gig? Was the playoff series where he was clearly your best bat not enough to get the nod?

I agree that Taylor seems like he’s earned a shot, but making a judgment on a 5-game sample is ill-advised. Ozuna’s an All-star type player, Washington needs to win now, so I could see Taylor and a low-level prospect (someone like Jose Sanchez) for Ozuna

And you wonder why they haven’t made the World Series. Let’s over value PROSPECTS when we have a chance to get a player who would put them over the top.

I’m not even a National fan, nor do I wonder why they haven’t made the World Series, because making the World Series is hard. 6 years of Robles is worth more than 2 years of Ozuna, though. Robles is a top 5 prospect in all of baseball

I definitely agree that the cardinals could and would beat any package the Nats can give. The Cardinals have a lot of motivation to get him and would cross that bat of their list…the cardinals are rich in pitching and outfield…and if the Nats are the cardinals biggest competition than consider Ozuna a Cardinal before Christmas

I think I read somewhere that a good comp for ohtani is luke weaver? I’d hate lose Reyes because the talent is there and his friendship with Carlos could help them both develop but for machado I trade Reyes if there’s a window to extend him before the deal is final

I’m with you Password. I’d trade Reyes in a second in a package for Machado. Sure, he seems like the best thing since sliced bread. However, you never know if he will come out from Tommy John surgery as strong as he was. But, as you say, as long as there is a window to resign Machado for 2019. That’s the big if. The Cards need a Holliday deal. Where Machado will stay. Not a Heyward deal wher you give up top prospects and he leaves leaves after one year (Thank goodness!). Seems like Cardinals are having a tough time finding takers on our mediocre players with the exception of Reyes at the winter Meetings. Mozeliak has no one to blame but himself on that matter. Can’t believe no one has jumped on Brett Cecil!! Ha!

If they lose Harper after this season? They do have another potential phenom in Juan Soto who bats left plays corner outfield (probably ends up at first base) also from the Dominican and there’s Victor Robles who projects to be better than Taylor in CF … so Eaton in CF again whilst Soto (age 19) and Robles (age 20) complete their development. … they trade Taylor plus two pitching prospects … Not 18 year old Sanchez another Dominican who likely is their best projectable defensive shortstop. … Difo perhaps …

I just don’t think the Cardinals should Target Ozuna or Yelich. I worry that Ozuna will return to be the .270 hitter he was before, and Yelich doesn’t have enough power in my opinion. Personally, JD Martinez is my first choice because there is no draft pick attached, and his power is insane. Yes, he’s not a great defender, but moving Fowler to a corner will help. Then ship Weaver, Kelly, Hudson, Bader, Fernandez, and Grichuk to Tampa for Archer and Colome. Finally you have a playoff caliber team. And, you still have Reyes, Flahrety, and Alcantara in your system.

I am so tired of Billy Beane’s song and dance every year about players, at the trade deadlines and offseason. The A’s are still interested in Marcell Ozuna, just like they were when they threw their hat into the ring on Shohei. Spare us the silliness and wasted time. Some people hang on his words when he says things like that. Come on…the only way for the A’s to get (what they think will be good) players is if they overpay. Even then, the players he’s chosen often don’t fulfill their pay check with quality work. Billy Butler comes to mind. Spare us the talk, BB, we’ll believe you when we see Ozuna on the field, and not one minute sooner. My days of believing all the BS hype about the A’s signing/trading for good players was over with BB, a long time ago! Also, if David Forst is the A’s GM, why is it that the only one we hear from and who gets him name mentioned is BB? Tired of BB! It’s time for an organizational/FO change, from the top down!

Jeter already unloaded Stanton. Trading Ozuna doesn’t make any sense. Trade Prado, Chen, Tazawa, Ziegler for whatever, a washing machine if he can.

Teal, This is going to be a Houston style teardown. 25 players making minimum. Two to three years of 100+ losses. Two to three years of #1 overall picks. The current marlins limited playoff window closed when Jose died.

Not sure about Pint, but probably pretty close. Maybe a Forrest Wall or something to compliment Almonte and Howard.

This has Giants written all over it… Miss out on Stanton, end up giving the same amount (in prospects) to land Ozuna. They are better off keeping those guys and drafting well. No offense to Ozuna or his game.

If the A’s get Ozuna they are giving up Barretto for sure. Maybe even Puke
