Despite recent reports connecting the Red Sox to Jose Abreu, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com tweets that talks between Boston and Chicago are “significantly overstated,” adding that there’s never been much traction between the two sides in that regard. That meshes with what The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal wrote yesterday (subscription required and recommended) when reporting that it’s unlikely the White Sox move Abreu to Boston or to any other club, “barring an unexpected change.”
Elsewhere in the AL…
- Right-hander Mike Fiers reportedly agreed to a one-year, $6MM deal with the Tigers last night, and ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets that Fiers actually turned down a two-year offer from the Orioles. Baltimore was comfortable committing $10-11MM to Fiers in total, but the righty is betting on himself in taking the one-year deal. As Crasnick notes, Fiers is still eligible for arbitration once more next offseason, so if he can remain healthy and hang onto a rotation spot throughout the season, he’d top that $10-11MM guarantee with another arbitration raise next winter.
- Similarly, left-hander Mike Minor didn’t accept the top offer he received in free agency. FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweeted this week that Minor had offers of $30MM total, though those offers came over the life of a four-year term. Minor took a slightly lesser $28MM guarantee over three years, giving him a much higher annual value on the deal. Notably, Minor told reporters after signing that the Rangers were the only team that was willing to give him the option to stretch out as a starter (Twitter link via Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News). Minor said he’s open to either role but wanted to at least have the opportunity to return to a rotation.
- Athletics GM David Forst spoke with reporters on a conference call yesterday and once again iterated that his team’s goal is to add a right-handed hitting corner outfielder to the mix (Twitter link via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle). Oakland will hope to come away from next week’s Winter Meetings with that player in tow, though there’s obviously no guarantee they’ll line up with a trade partner in Orlando. Meanwhile, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that even though the A’s have no plans to trade Khris Davis, they’ll probably receive inquiries regarding his availability, given that Davis is only two years away from free agency. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects a sizable $11.1MM salary for Davis in arbitration this year.
- Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins tells Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith that even after acquiring Aledmys Diaz from the Cardinals, his team is still looking at additional middle infield options (Twitter link). The outfield, too, remains a priority, and the Jays are open to adding some help at catcher, though that’s a lesser priority, Nicholson-Smith notes. While the addition of Diaz certainly gives Toronto some much-needed depth, he’s coming off a down year while shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and second baseman Devon Travis are both prone to injuries.

If the Yanks get Stanton we have big probleme for years!! Imagine Stanton Judge and Sanchez 3-4-5
J leathal86
A lot of strikeouts
jbigz12
theyll strikeout more than the orioles. That would be a lethal combo. I’d take Harper over Stanton there though.
jd396
Ouch
jbigz12
Minor to the rotation is interesting. Didn’t think of that as a possibility. He flops you put him back in the pen where you know he’s dominant.
iwonderifthisnameworks
I would think most people question his durability, not his talent.
jbigz12
I was thinking a little bit of both. Been almost 4 years since he started a game and his last season as a starter wasn’t a beauty. Have to consider the opportunity cost of him not being the dominant lefty out of your pen too. Would have to be better than a 5th starter type to hang around the rotation.
J leathal86
The As can have trumbo from us we will take cotton off your hands
sportsjunkie24
Thumbs up
arc89
A’s don’t need Trumbo they have a 1B in Olson. They have a DH in Davis. They have a RF in Joyce. Trumbo is one bad contract that will keep taking and taking from the O’s.
sacball
Gross, no thanks
Solaris601
I knew BAL would be all over Fiers, but they could have easily matched Detroit’s offer. 3 rotation openings, and they are yet to sign one SP. O’s tend to wait longer than most teams to sign FAs, but if they wait until mid to late January to make their moves, they’re gonna be stuck with arms nobody else wants. Might as well field offers for Machado.
jbigz12
I don’t know if Fiers is the guy you want to pay for. That probably would’ve been. A ton of hrs given up. Would be nice to see someone inked soon though.
J leathal86
If they trade away Machado and britton I’m quite sure they can have the starting rotation they desire
seamaholic 2
Fiers not a great fit for BAL’s stadium, which is very homer prone.
J leathal86
Second time in 3 years we have missed a free agent and offered more years than the team who got them fiers/Fowler unbelievable go Os lol
adshadbolt
Players see the righting on the wall in Baltimore they don’t want to go there and knowing the O’s they probably would have failed his physical.
jdodge22
I really can’t understand the redsox lack of interest in Stanton. This team not only has lack of power but they are a boring and unlikable team. Ratings for nesn are down significantly. Stanton would boost the interest and excitement for this team through the roof. No more 20 homer .280 hitters!!!
fmj
I’d take a team full of 20 HR 280 hitters
seamaholic 2
Depends if you’re trying to win or increase ratings.
ellisburks
Yeah boring and unlikeable. Betts wounds puppies in his free time and Benintendi knocks glasses of milk from old ladies hands. Worst of the bunch is Sale who punches children and steals their candy. Not a likable person on the whole team.
jbigz12
I’d say the Red Sox are a lot less likeable without Ortiz. They don’t have their big fun loving media guy anymore. Sale isn’t going to be getting a career in broadcasting after he’s done.. Has nothing to do with the quality of the team but I can see how someone would see that. Betts is a stud but he’s a quiet guy. Not unlike most other teams but I think the loss of Ortiz does change the way an average person would look at the Sox. Looks like a bunch of non personality guys cause Ortiz’s or your Manny Ramirez, curt schillings of the world they have had playing for them. Papelbon too. Not a good or a bad thing just an observation. I’m an orioles fan so I wasn’t a big fan of any of those guys.
BoSoXaddict
You have it backwards. The Red Sox have LOTS of intetest in Stanton – it’s Stanton who isn’t interested in playing for Boston. And, TBH, even as a lifelong Boston fan I can understand that. Don’t like it, but I can understand it. We’re just not the FA destination city we once were and our media/fans, while passionate and informed, can be very tough on some players if they’re not cut out for that level of spotlight and scrutiny.
vinscully16
Devon Travis is a good ball player, but he needs off the Toronto turf.
Torontopoly
There’s no longer turf in the infield so it’s not as big an issue. The SkyDome moved to dirt in 2016.
jimmertee
The Rogers centre turf is a huge issue for Devon Travis. His knees are fragile at best. With the new defensive shifts he is running all over the turf. He needs to be traded now. Travis knees won’t last in Toronto.
cygnus2112
I’m a big Steven Piscotty fan and think his future is bright but I also hope that he’s traded to Oakland where he needs to be so that he can be as close to his family in this trying time which in the end, results with the A’s & Cards doing something equitable…
jimmertee
Aledmys Diaz is not going to be a solid long-term solution for the Jays. He scouts a very poor defensively and his bat is just okay. He may pop a few in the Rogers Centre. They got him for practically nothing and no other franchises were interested either.
I don’t know why the media [or fans] is even listening to Atkins or Shapiro. The Toronto Blue Jays need a full-on rebuild. Barring major acquistions for #1, #3, RF, 2nd, leadoff, 40% catcher, a new SS, and a lefty shut down releiver, this team is going no where in 2018.
Mihailo1227
I believe Abreu staying, the White Sox value him a lot what about avi Garcia?
Grebek7
Hoping Avi stays too. Love for him to find his powerstroke next year. Build off his breakout season last year, Avi plays the game the right way & plays hard. If someone blows Rick away with an offer he can’t refuse he’ll be moved, don’t see that happening though. Sox should eye contention in 2019, especially with the returns the have already gotten in weak division minus Cleveland. Avi proved to be excellent in the clutch last year
dazedatnoon
eye contention in 2019?
Contention for the AL Central with 2 other teams rebuilding, maybe…
Contention for the World Series, no
I’m a White Sox fan and this narrative seems silly to me. CF is a hole, SS is a hole, DH is a hole, over half the rotation is a hole, the bullpen is a enormous hole currently.
Ohtani and Stanton are off most teams “to do” lists. When JD Martinez signs then Abreu becomes the best available bat on the market. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit to see a GM reach to make a deal happen. It has happened sooooo many times before.
Aaron Sapoznik
All of those “holes” you refer to should become plusses come 2019 or 2020.
Luis Robert looks to be the White Sox future CF.
Tim Anderson has already been locked up with a contract extension to be their core SS.
To call the DH a “hole” on a rebuilding team is ludicrous. It could easily be filled by the likes of Jose Abreu or Avi Garcia in the short or long term OR simply be utilized on a rotating basis to give many of the future stars a break from the field when their competitive window begins.
As for the White Sox starting rotation and bullpen, each of those areas figures to be their greatest strength in a couple of seasons. No organization in MLB has a more impressive group of power arms in their system than the Chicago White Sox.
Priggs89
It’s way too early to call SS a hole for the White Sox.
Tim Anderson was not great last year by any means, but he was nearly a 3 WAR player his rookie year. He has excellent speed and underrated pop in his bat, and he was a VERY good defender his rookie year. He definitely took a step backwards last year (at least one), but he had to deal with a LOT more personally than any 24 year old should ever have to deal with. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he started playing significantly better after seeking out professional help… People seem to forget that these guys aren’t robots. I’ll cut him some slack for his performance last year.
I believe this upcoming season will be very telling for his career progression. I have high hopes that he can bounce back on defense and build on his finish with the bat from last year. And hopefully he can take a walk or two. We’ll see, but like I said, I’m not even close to ready to call SS a hole for this team at the moment.
Aaron Sapoznik
Priggs89: Well said!
Grebek7
I was talking about Hahn being blown away with an offer for Avi. I would doubt some GM offers a haul for Abreu either though & Jose’s more valuable to Sox than any other team. Contending for the A.L. Central in 2019 isn’t unrealistic & once your in never know what can happen.Twins rotation is garbage, Santana unlikely to repeat last years success, Berrios not yet proven & their lineup isn’t intimidating. With Tigers & Royals rebuilding, Indians only very good team in division. Bullpens dont take forever to remake. Not a big Tim Anderson fan either but he was dealing with the death of his best friend last year. I’m not ready to say he can’t play. Alexei’s worst offense year was when his father-in-law was murdered in Cuba. Mentorship role Jose & Avi will play in the development of these prospects is invaluable. I dont envision Rick trading either of them. Definitely not Jose
Frank kemble
Blue Jays and Phillies would line up well on a trade for Stroman or Sanchez. Cesar Hernandze with 3 yrs of control to Toronto, along with a pair of AAA prospects like OF Dylan Cozins and RHP Franklin Kilome…throw in one of several young starters who is not succeeding like say Ben Lively or Jared Eckhart or Mark Leiter Jr..or zach efflin. Both Stroman and Hernandze have a few yrs of control and similar salaries atm…toronto also gets a young corner power of bat..a pitching prospect and another young starter. Good for both teams.
jimmertee
FYI, Stroman is not available in a trade. The Jays won’t be trading him. Period. Sanchez finger issues are not resolved so the Jays likely won’t be dealing him either. He’ll likely end up in the pen if his finger explodes again.
sacball
A trade for Stroman would have to start with Hoskins
stubby66
Honestly I think San Francisco is a lot farther ahead signing Cain, JD Martinez and trading for Davis to make up their outfield for the same amount of money for Stanton. ( who only haves 1 more hr than Davis in a 4 yr span.
sacball
Giants are more likely to sign Dyson than Cain (no draft pick compensation) with Duggar possibly coming up in the middle of the season
jbigz12
Only because Stanton has missed time because of injury. And Davis is a butcher in the field. He’s probably best suited for the AL.
Aaron Sapoznik
As I have been saying, Jose Abreu will not be traded this offseason unless the White Sox are blown away with an offer. The front office has not been pro-actively shopping him but have told other clubs they would be willing to listen on offers.
I still maintain that there is a better than even chance that Abreu receives a contract extension with the White Sox and remains an important core piece as their competitive window begins in 2019 or 2020. He is the current face of the franchise, desires to remain a White Sox and just might continue in that role until he hangs up his spikes.
Grebek7
Well said Aaron. Jose’s not going anywhere i hope he gets that extension too
Grebek7
Dombrowski offers Hahn Betts, Bogaerts & Devers for Abreu then we got a deal
