Mets Rumors: Gonzalez, Infield, Nimmo, Harrison

By Steve Adams | January 16, 2018 at 9:04pm CDT

Veteran Adrian Gonzalez will have the inside track to be named the Mets’ primary first baseman in 2018, reports Mike Puma of the New York Post. The 35-year-old first baseman (36 in May) reportedly agreed to a deal with the Mets over the weekend, though that agreement is still pending a physical. That shouldn’t be considered a formality, given the back issues that Gonzalez has had in recent years. The Mets still view young Dominic Smith as a piece of the future, per Puma, but the organization is not convinced that he’s ready for the big leagues just yet. While Gonzalez comes with virtually no risk — the Mets will only pay him the league minimum, with Atlanta on the hook for the remainder of his $22.35MM salary — he’s coming off a woeful season in which be batted just .242/.287/.355 with three homers and multiple DL stints due to persistent back injuries.

A few more notes on the Mets…

  • Puma also tweets that the Mets, even after adding Jay Bruce on a three-year, $39MM contract, are focused on infield additions. New York could conceivably upgrade at either third base or second base (with Asdrubal Cabrera playing the other spot), though the team’s preference is to add a second baseman, according to Puma. He also notes that a free-agent signing is likelier than trade. There are a number of veteran options available in free agency both at second base and at third base (links via MLBTR’s Free Agent Tracker). Options range from Brandon Phillips, Jose Reyes and Neil Walker to Yunel Escobar, Todd Frazier and Eduardo Nunez, with several other veterans that could be had on minor league contracts also available.
  • Prior to being traded to the Giants, Andrew McCutchen was a known target of the Mets in trade talks. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic shines some more light on the matter (subscription required and strongly recommended), reporting that New York wouldn’t part with outfielder Brandon Nimmo for a one-year rental of McCutchen. New York still believes Nimmo will develop into a quality big leaguer, though Rosenthal adds that the team believes he could be part of a package in talks with the Pirates regarding Josh Harrison. The 24-year-old Nimmo, who was selected 13th overall in the 2011 draft, hit .260/.379/.418 with five homers and a pair of steals in 215 plate appearances as a rookie last season. It would seem that if the Mets are to entertain the notion of moving him, they’d prefer multiple years of control over whichever more established asset they acquire in his place.
  • Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News hears the same as Rosenthal, reporting that the Mets would indeed be willing to include Nimmo in a trade that would pry Harrison away from the Pirates. However, she adds that the Mets would not part with Dominic Smith in order to obtain Harrison, even with Gonzalez in the fold for 2018 and Bruce (who figures to see some time at first base) locked up through 2020. Ackert adds that the Mets were approached about Smith in multiple trade negotiations this winter but weren’t inclined to include him in any of the proposed scenarios. She also notes that Eduardo Nunez, Neil Walker and Jose Reyes are among the team’s potential infield targets in free agency.

If it makes any difference, I believe Gonzales first went on the DL for tendinitis.

Why would the Pirates want Smith anyway? They have Bell. Unless they want to move Bell back to the OF and leave Meadows in AAA for a while.
Nimmo/Meadows would be nice options for Pittsburgh in the OF. I’d still see if a future SP could somehow be in the mix.

Of course the Pirates don’t want Dominic Smith, no one does.

What is the source for this? Oh look, the New York Daily News. The New York papers just make sh… up.

He is a poor mans hunter pence. I think it would be amazing if he reached that skill level, but he plays similarly to him. That to me is his ceiling, but likely lower than that. Useful, prob a fourth outfielder type guy. Really happy kid though and is fun to watch.

So, like a combination between Eric Byrnes and Woody Harrelson’s character from Cheers, then?

He could also use more playing time, plate appearances, but even with inconsistent playing time he showed he was an asset off the bench. I like the kid, but if he can make a trad for Harrison happen, I’m all in.

He had a 380 OBP and above average fielding and that is in line with his long term numbers…. so yeah, he already IS an elite bat and he is much better than Harrison and the Pirate would be fleecing the Mets.

Pence is a bad comp as a player. Nimmo has plate discipline and is a good CF. He is a leadoff type. Pence was a free swinger with power in RF. Only comparable might be personality, but honestly I don’t see that either. Pence is a goof and nimmo is just happy to be here at this point.

Nimmo is an everyday leadoff hitter at best. Excellent fourth OF at worst. He is worth a lot more than Harrison.

Funny how Don Smith has been compared to a prime Adrian as a ceiling. I see Don learning a lot from Gonzo and becoming a better pro for it. Nimmo is underrated as heck, guy plays with grit, energy, passion, and brings a spark to the table. He will be a good everyday big leaguer. I hope both get 400+ ABs this year and continue to develop. Mets are closer than people think…

Mets window to win is right now, before our pitching staff hits free agency & our cheap owners let them walk. No time for projects with Nimmo & Smith getting 400 Abs

Mets pitching nearing free agency is more fiction than fact.

Other than Harvey and Familia after this season, is 2 years of Wheeler, 3 of Degrom and 4 each of Syndergarrd and Matz a closing window?

Mets are likely to work out extensions with Degrom and Syndergaard at the appropriate time. No need to rush now.

The window isn’t closing. It’s just that nobody knows if wheeler or Harvey is a decent pitcher anymore. Matz is a question mark too though I like his chances a great deal more. If all of them pitch like they can or have shown at one point then yeah the Mets have a shot but that’s a big if at the moment. Mets need great pitching because their entire infield is a huge question mark.

Hopefully we will finally see that rotation of deGrom, Syndergaard, Harvey, Matz and Wheeler we’ve been waiting for since 2015. So sad they’ve never all been healthy at the same time

Clearly the guy the Mets need to sign is Nunez. We have zero speed. He’s flying under the radar after a nice season. Versatile, can play all over the place. Plan B: bring Reyes back to play 2b/3b + mentor Rosario.

Nice job by the Mets in trying to destroy Wilmer Flores’ career. In another organization probably he would have been already a 30 HR second baseman.

Flores is a middle infield and 3rd base defensive liability with slow feet, excessively long arm action, low foot speed. There’s good reason why he’s not a starter. He’s just not quick enough for starting role and we’ve repeatedly seen this over the years.

The safest position for him is DH and first base. Plus spot starting elsewhere. Play him often elsewhere and his defensive warts become rather evident and hurt the team.

      Career vs. RHP:
      255/291/392

in addition to the poor defense at every position besides 1B, but yeah – he’s definitely a 30 HR guy considering 75% of his AB’s will come against RHP that he slugged under .400?

      • erosen

Sure, for his career PA and HR if you add vsRHP HR/PA*450 and vsLHP HR/PA*150, you get only 21 HRs.

But more recent years are more relevant- do the same for the two most recent years, 2016-2017, and I get 27 HR

If he’s healthy is 600 PA a good target? Here are the NL average PAs by line-up position last year:
        2nd 738
        3rd 722
        4th 705
        5th 688
        6th 671
        …

If he was given about 150 games, that would be roughly 620-680 PA available, so the 27 figure per 600 PA would be 28-31 HRs.

And if he was getting more PAs than the Mets gave him over the years, he may have improved faster with more exposure to MLB pitching. So maybe in such an alternate universe, he’d already be a ~30HR hitter as the previous poster suggests.

I think Nimmo & Lagares would make a fine CF platoon but this team has other holes at 1B, C, 2B & 3B and a rookie SS. That’s not a championship caliber lineup.

If they signed Lucroy & traded for Harrison, that would be better but they’d still be counting on the bats of Cabrera, Lagares/Nimmo/AGon & Rosario.
