NL West Notes: Reynolds, Giants, Tomas

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | January 18, 2018 at 10:11pm CDT

First baseman Mark Reynolds is hoping to return to the Rockies in 2018, but he’s seeking a big league deal this time around after playing his way onto the team on a minor league pact last season, he tells Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. “I talked with the Rockies during the winter meetings and Jeff (general manager Jeff Bridich) told me that they had to take care of the bullpen and then see what the money situation was,” says Reynolds. “So now I’m waiting to see what happens.” The 34-year-old Reynolds hit .267/.352/.487 with 30 homers for the Rox last season, though there was a glaring 275-point difference between his OPS at home (.978, 21 homers) and on the road (.703, nine homers). Power is Reynolds’ biggest attribute, but it’s a tough selling point at a time when home runs were hit at an all-time high in 2017.

More from the division…

  • Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area tackled some questions from Giants fans. The outfield remains a key point of focus, of course. With Andrew McCutchen expected to play every day in right, Austin Slater could share time in left with Hunter Pence while also picking up some action in center, says Pavlovic. That doesn’t mean the team is bowing out of the pursuit of another up-the-middle player, of course — or that Slater has locked up a roster spot. (He’ll be competing in camp with Jarrett Parker, Mac Williamson, and Gorkys Hernandez.) There’s one other notable name to consider in the internal mix. But as Pavlovic wrote yesterday, the San Francisco front office seems inclined to take its time with center fielder Steven Duggar. “This is a time of year when you would rather have Duggar in your back pocket and bring in a center fielder that allows us to have more time,” GM Bobby Evans explains. Of course, the club has little wiggle room if it hopes to stay under the luxury tax line; it remains to be seen just how the outfield mix will look when camp opens.
  • Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas is facing charges after he was clocked by police driving at high rates of speed, as MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reports. Tomas, who was reportedly driving at 105 mph, was initially charged with reckless driving and criminal speeding. While the incident evinces poor judgment on the part of the 27-year-old, thankfully it is said not to have involved drugs or alcohol. It’s not the best start to the new year for Tomas, who is looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2017 season in which he struggled when he was on the field.

Huh? How? Driving 105 does not necessarily mean you are putting yourself in danger. If you know what you’re doing, you can drive 100+ on the right roads very safely. Uninformed comment

Ok…that doesnt change the fact that driving that fast got him charged with criminal speeding which is a Class 3 misdemeanor and is punishable by a maximum 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.

poll question. what do you guys think is more of a danger on the roads?
someone going 50 on a 70 mph highway or 105 on a 70 mph highway? its amazing that legal fines and jail time come with the person caught going faster when it has to be a fact that the person going 50 is more likely to lead a crash.

I actually agree. On an open highway sometimes I do 105 in my mustang. You’re an a$$ if you’re weaving in and out of lanes at that speed, but an open straight away highway it’s not. Now I don’t know exactly what Tomas was doing … my only point is that 105 isn’t this huge danger people are making it out to be.

I got a ticket for going over 100 mph in North Dakota about 10 years ago.. Cost me $14 bucks.. If you ever want to try driving at those speeds I recommend North Dakota.. Their highways are straight and traffic is light outside of Fargo.. Plus, at $14 dollars you don’t risk an entire weeks paycheck like in most states..

I wouldn’t say it’s definitely “this huge danger” but as you increase speed over the posted speed limit you definitely increase the danger to not only yourself but also others.

I mean they are both owed pretty similar money overall. It’d be another accounting trick for the Dodgers and it’d kind of save the Dbacks an extra year of rostering him and money throw in. I’m guessing much like Kemp, Tomas probably wouldn’t see a Dodgers uniform, but if he did I could see maybe potential uses for him. That said if they did attempt to package him with prospects and money it’d probably be a little easier. And I know we all bag on Kemp’s defense, because it’s bad, but I’m not sure Tomas has ever even shown to be competent in the OF. It’s an interesting thought. You know Hazen probably is itching to shed himself of Tomas, just as the Dodgers are of Kemp, but then you ask why would the Dbacks help the dodgers land an accounting trick? Crazier things have happened so who knows. It is an interesting thought though.

Just an idea to float out there…Brandon Nimmo to the giants. Young OF can possibly play center (though not ideal) and prospects would likely be high but, gives you an younger player to potentially play the corners until duggar or others are ready. Thoughts? Seems like the type of player that would fit in well.

The giants don’t really want to spend prospects, they just don’t have many in the system and likely would have to give up guys that you are trying to give time to.

Mets are bigger on Nimmo than you’d think. They need a 2B/3B and another reliever. I can’t see a matchup there. They aren’t even too keen on Nimmo for Josh Harrison. Arroyo for Nimmo would have been interesting if he was still there maybe.

If the Mets were that big on Nimmo why did they sign Bruce? With Cepedes, Lagares, and Conforto already on board. and with a limited budget, if they thought that highly of Nimmo, signing Bruce makes no sense, If Nimmo were expected to contribute, the money used to sign Bruce could have gone to some other need.

They are also assuming some injuries…so there will be ABs out there. Lagares may or may not produce this year, which makes his salary more problematic….so having a league minimum guy in the platoons makes it more palatable. I’m hopeful for Lageres who has been working with JD Martinez’s hitting coach in the off season. Of course…it’s the Mets..so I’m sure they find a way to screw it up. Personally, I really like Nimmo and think he deserved more of a shot earlier. He gets on base and done well in the field…at league minimum with 3+ years of control.

While I LOVE what Ender Inciarte brings to The Braves…and feel that he’ll be a building block for a future playoff run for The Braves….IF The Giants were to BLOW The Braves AWAY with an offer for Inciarte (who would fit PERFECTLY in centerfield for The Giants, given that they play in a division with DEEP centerfield parks like AT&T Park, Dodger Stadium, Petco Park, Chase Field and Coors Field)….The Braves should at least listen.

If I’m The Braves, if The Giants were to offer outfielder Helliot Ramos, outfielder/1B Chris Shaw, and starting pitcher Tyler Beede……I’d seriously consider it!

Ramos and Shaw both provide serious power playing outfield…while Beede would be another power arm that could either push for a spot in our future rotation/convert to a high leverage, closer type role/be used as trade bait to fill a need on our offense/be trade bait to get prospects to fill the lower levels of The Minors.

If not, then I’m more than happy with The Braves keeping Inciarte. Given that The Giants are trying to stay under The $197 mil Salary Cap Tax Threshold (Inciarte is scheduled to make only $4 mil in 2018, followed by salaries of $5 mil, $7 mil, $8 mil and a team option of $9 mil in 2022)! Inciarte BOTH fills a crucial outfield role AND has a contract that fits UNDER The $197 mil payroll!

From The Braves perspective, trading Inciarte ONLY makes sense IF they are BLOWN AWAY by an offer for hjm. With that said….The Giants are indeed trying to load up for a World Series run in 2018. Why not BLOW The Braves AWAY and acquire a perfect fit in Inciarte?

Because the Giants aren’t going to deplete an already weak farm by trading away their top prospects for Inciarte. If they were going to trade those guys they would be better off throwing in Suarez and Garcia and trying to land Yelich.

        • RunDMC

Maybe, but SF is looking for a CF, and while Yelich has played it, he would be questionable defensively. A move to corner seems inevitable. And there’s no telling that a package of SF’s top package is enough if they have their sights set on Acuña and Robles. ATL could have Lane Adams in CF until Acuña is ready with Pache being the CF of the future, slotting Acuña to RF.

While it would be an incredible take, it could also have the negative effect at delaying a serious run sooner than later by subtracting Inciarte.

yeah or they could sign or platoon someone a lot less flashy and once the tax resets next year work on a prominent signing since they don’t have to worry for a few years about resetting it again and not deplete the farm – i don’t think people understand exactly how depleted the system is – it is so bad that last year they actually didn’t have enough guys to fill the AA roster and had to scout local independent leagues to get enough guys to fill the roster. The lack of pics over the last few years has seriously impacted the system -not the level of picks mind you but sheer number

I just dont think the Giants have enough to get that done. Ramos is very far away and Inciarte is a very, very strong, young player on a very team friendly contract.
For a team on the verge of competing like the Braves, they would probably want young, controllable, cheap major league talent which the Giants lack.

Do the Giants have enough talent to get Inciarte? If so, how barren would it leave their farm system if they made the trade? I honestly don’t know a ton about their farm, but based on some tidbits around the Cutch deal..it sounds like they are pretty thin.

We shouldn’t do that, but we also shouldn’t forget the many examples of amazing rookie seasons that did not carry over to a sophomore season as well. Sophomore slumps exist mainly because the entire league now has seen him for a whole season and had an entire off season to prepare for him. He is THE guy now, not the rookie surprise. He is the guy that pitchers will focus on. Of course, some special players have been able to work around this, but right now we don’t know if Bellinger (or Judge) are special or just another ROY flame out. Too early to tell, either way.

If you want to argue that EVERYONE should have to re-take the test after 5 or 10 years, I wouldn’t argue, in fact I would support that argument. But to single out MLB players as if they are more reckless than anyone else is reckless itself.

Tomas has only been in the USA for 5 years or less, meaning he’s recently taken some semblance of a drivers education course.

Giants aren’t giving up their top three prospects. Plus Inciarte counts as 6m against the luxury tax and the Giants have 3-4 million.

Brave already have two catchers who are better than Hundley. I really like Inciarte i also think he’s a perfect fit for what the Giants need. But hes not worth their top three prospects especially Beede. Beede is the Giants 6th starter and he will be needed for them to complete.

Rox should steal Tommy Joseph from Phillies. He’d hit 30 hr’s playing half his games in Colorado and can be acquired for a bag of balls.

Or they could keep that bag of balls and sign Chris Carter to a Milb deal and he would hit 60 homers and cost the league minimum.

When are these players hitting 60 HRs at Coors? These are the TOTAL number of 40 home run season for the Rockies since the humidor was installed in 2002.

        2015 Nolan Arenado – 42
        2015 Carlos Gonzalez – 40
        2016 Nolan Arenado – 41

That is it for the past 15 seasons. When Chris Carter hit over 40, Miller Park in Milwaukee had a higher HR park factor than Coors. So in theory, Carter would have hit FEWER homers as a Rockies player.

Coors Field helps batting average, without a doubt. The outfield is huge and more balls fall in as hits when they would be outs in other parks. And the park is advantageous for power hitters, but not more so than any of 10-12 other hitter friendly parks like Texas, Philly, Cincy, Milwaukee, Yankees etc.

Amazing how with modern automotive tech and advancements we still use 40+ year old speed limits. Probably because it has nothing to do with safety.

The federal speed limit was removed not even 20 years ago.. They are set at the state level now.. That is why some states are still at 65 mph and some are at 75 mph.. Montana tried going back to the way it was before federal limits which was set at “Within reason” during the day and 65 mph at night but they had some serious crashes and issues with idiots..

We should title this article ‘Glass Houses.’ I’m not sure if I know a person that’s never gone over 100 mph. I myself am guilty a hundred times over. I’ll tell you, I’m easily confused. Aside from our Sunday morning presentation we establish as reality, we want athletes to be extreme and risky and push the limits in the sport they play and then we expect a bank manager personality to take hold when they punch out. Because, of course, deep in our hearts is the belief that if we were gifted the talents to be a super star athlete we’d know how to do everything right, as subjective as right is.

Well said, man. I know I’m different to judge whether it was 100 on an open highway or 100 on a residential, but it sounds as though Tomas did the first; what most drivers have done at some point in their life. I think he should still have to pay the fine and learn the lesson because even though he plays baseball, he shouldn’t be above the law. We know it’s going to be a ticket if we get caught speeding, so let’s sign him up for traffic school and hope he exercises caution in the future.

I am curious, if blanco is still available it might make sense to reunion with him and user him as a cf option, they let him go when he was down due to health but if he is healthy he is cheap and familiar with the CF role in sf.

Irresponsible by Tomas but the truth is sometimes we just get caught. Most of us don’t normally drive 105 but I bet most have. I know going between MD and FL on 95 with minimal traffic will almost lull you into cruising above 100. Until you get to NC where their is always cops waiting to ticket travelers.

Yeah cause that certainly worked out for Jose Fernandez. Sober or not, it’s stupid behavior for someone who is set for life and it’s still relatively young. These players have been highly invested in, it would be nice for them to have some personal responsibility. It’s like we’ve learned nothing from the likes of Fernandez, Yordano Ventura, Andy Matte, or Oscar Tavares.

Fernandez died in a boating accident when they hit some rocks.. He wasn’t driving the boat.. Not sure how he pertains to Tomas going 105 mph.. Tavares had a blood alcohol level of almost .30 when he crashed..

Three of those deaths happened in the Dominican Republic, where the roads are a lot worse than Phoenix, and one happened on the water which is not even comparable. It’s not a great idea to drive 105 MPH on a US freeway, but it is not exactly a death wish like driving that speed on a two lane dirt road in the DR either.

How do we not know that the cop isn’t a Rockies fan? What if someone in the Diamondbacks front office happens to be very good friends with the cop? What if a cop/Giants fan plays in a 12-team 5×5 fantasy baseball league dynasty and could somehow benefit. THERE ARE MURDERERS OUT THERE!!! THIS COULD BE ANYTHING! I HOPE EVERYONE IS OKAY!

I really wonder how the Giants view Brandon Belt. If the Giants truly believe that Chris Shaw can be a big time player, then they should trade Belt. At some point, they need some salary flexibility and have to make a tough choice. If you’re a team like the Padres, isn’t Belt a better value proposition at $15M per year than Hosmer? From the Giants standpoint, it gives them a few more million to spend this year and get a decent CF. Next year it’s $15M to use on a Bumgarner extension.

Belt has a no trade clause and coming off multiple concussions. Nobody is trading for him. Besides the Giants will probably trade Shaw for the Centerfielder they need.

Belt doesn’t have a no trade clause pence does. And I agree few teams wouldn’t want to take the chance till they see him play which we would get a low return on him. Everyone forgets Belt is good for us in the reg season and post season if this season is a bust Belt will be gone and Shaw will be at first if not he will be traded for a starter or some other expensive player on our way to our 4th WS this decade.

Belt has a 10 team block on trades. With injuries, salary, and 1/3 of the teams rebuilding there’s a very limited trade market.

Reynolds is a definite viable option for the Rox at 1B. It may depend on his contract demands. He had a good first half in 2017 and faded after that. He is still an MLB player with good power and defense.
