The Padres have designated infielder Jose Rondon for assignment, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Twitter link). Rondon’s spot on the Padres’ 40-man roster will go to reliever Craig Stammen, whose deal with the team is now official.
Rondon, 23, has been a member of the San Diego organization since it acquired him from the Angels in a trade involving reliever Huston Street in July 2014. At the time, Rondon ranked among the Angels’ top prospects, though he hasn’t yet emerged as a regular major leaguer. During his time with the Padres, the righty-swinging Rondon has accrued just 26 big league plate appearances and hit .120/.154/.120 over that limited sample. Rondon divided last season between the Double-A and Triple-A levels, where he batted .293/.347/.442 in 347 PAs.
With one option remaining, Rondon could conceivably catch on with another club and continue to serve as minor league depth in 2018.

To be fair, you need a really high IQ to understand Rick and Morty.

Please, just stop. Please.

Hmmm curious decision.
Matt Galvin
Just Traded an Infielder to Blue Jays to open a spot.
HaveUseenMyBaseball
Pads need Solartes spot to add Makita. I meant I find the decision to dfa Rondon over others to add Stammen curious.

Surprised it wasn’t Gale, but whatevs

Would he be a good pick for the cards?
bjaeger2003
Yankees will sign him to a minor league deal. They need the IF depth
tim815
He was DFA’d
They can claim him, not claim him, or trade for him.
He isn’t to the “minor league deal” stage yet.
bjaeger2003
Thanks for the clarity. I used the wrong word but “claim” is what I meant.
jdgoat
He’s going to the Phillies to replace Galvis
Brixton
JP Crawford exists
jdgoat
My guess is he’ll take his roster spot, maybe more as the utility guy though
DVail1979
Yes … he’s going to replace Galvais … JP Crawford who?
bjaeger2003
Yankees will sign pick him up. They need the IF depth.

Wouldn’t the Solarte trade have opened up a 40-man roster spot? In that case, why not just wait to announce the Stammen signing?
lowtalker1
They signed the rhp from Japan today as well
They needed 2 slots

If he had an option left, why not just option him off the 40 man…?
HaveUseenMyBaseball
Thats not how it works.
lowtalker1
thats not how this works. To use an option would be to remove them from the mlb roster an option them down to the minors. to get them them off the 40 man; they would first have to dfa the player. if that said player clears the other 29 teams then they can release him or outright him to the minors and off the 40 man.
bosoxforlife
It would seem that Solarte is worth more than two empty uniforms.

Looks like that Street trade can now officially be rendered useless
lowtalker1
street got the padres alvarez. alvarez plus hahn got norris. norris got a pitcher out of the nats farm…. havent heard anything about that guy since though
outinleftfield
Pedro Avila. He pitched for your low a and high a teams last season. Still only 20 years old. Has a mid 90s sinker and 2 other pitches that are average.
lowtalker1
There we go. Didn’t hear much of him during the year. Time will tell
disgruntledreader 2
His fastball is a pure four-seamer, and his curve and change both flashed well above average in Ft. Wayne.
outinleftfield
I haven’t seen him pitch in person since he was in Hagerstown. At that point, he threw a FB with heavy sink that sat 93 and touched 95, a change that flashed plus at times and that he used as an out pitch, and a slurvy 10-5 curve with below average command.
Average is not a bad thing. A MLB average change and curve with a plus FB would make him a very valuable starter for any team.
It would be interesting if he went to a 4 seam after the success he had with the sinker in the Sally League. Is that the Padres pitching philosophy?
lowtalker1
depends on the pitcher. sliders seem to work their way into padres pitchers hands as well
disgruntledreader 2
Usually, they prefer it.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Shouldda use him as their shortstop and not traded for Galvis.
HaveUseenMyBaseball
Preller must not think much of his SS defense or his bat. Most likely will end up at 2nd base and Pads have enough of those.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Wouldn’t have mattered in 2018 and Galvis is gone after 2018 anyway so…
kingtopher
Jesus Christ let it go already. Do you ever do anything except make the rest of us Padres fans embarrassed to be associated with you? I don’t really get that trade either, but Rondon sure wasn’t the answer.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Galvis isn’t the answer either
nolan1021
He would be a good pickup for the tigers who need more infield depth.
outinleftfield
He would be a good pickup for the O’s. Good infield depth or platoon player. He hits LHP really well. Doesn’t have much power, but could be interim at 3B if Machado is traded.
Phillies2017
He’s the type of piece every team would want. 24 year old infield prospects don’t grow on trees. He’s not a slam dunk superstar by any means but you could do a lot worse than a young infielder with a good glove, solid contact ability and average pop for future considerations at most. He could stand to get on base more
