Orioles To Re-Sign Craig Gentry

By Jeff Todd | February 7, 2018 at 12:24pm CDT

The Orioles have struck a minor-league deal to bring back outfielder Craig Gentry, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter link). Gentry receives a MLB spring invite and could earn $900K in the majors.

The 34-year-old has seen action in each of the past nine MLB campaigns, including a 77-game run with the O’s last year. He took only 117 plate appearances in that span, but did produce a useful .257/.333/.386 slash line. The right-handed hitter performed much better against lefties, as he has for most of his career.

Gentry will likely battle for a bench spot in camp, with players such as the right-handed-hitting Joey Rickard, switch-hitting Anthony Santander, and lefty-swinging Jaycob Brugman also in the same general mix. The Orioles will need to give at least one spot to a lefty bat — perhaps one that’s not yet in the organization — but figure to have at least one reserve spot open to competition.

Yep looked good at times, plus a real nice presence on the base paths when used.

seriously, what are these guys doing about their rotation!?! Yeah, we all know how slow this offseason’s been yada yada yada and many teams still have holes, but I really cannot recall a team with SUCH a dire need continuing to do NOTHING this late in the game. A major league ballclub is prepared to go with Gausmann as its #1? Really? The direction of this franchise is truly pathetic; what are they hanging on to? Im not an Orioles fan so Im a complete outsider looking in, but man from the surface this team seems completely fine with wallowing in mediocrity. I feel bad for the fans.

Who says they are doing nothing? Do you have insider knowledge?

What’s pathetic is how people get so consumed over pro sports.

PP selling baby parts. meh, but, the Orioles haven’t signed a starter….how will we live ?!!

What is sad is that some folks can’t let others express their thoughts with out being judgmental and negative.

Actually Bundy is our #1, Gausman is #2. I’m more concerned that as an O’s fan I have no idea is the #3 starter, much less #4 or #5 starter. I didn’t think it was possible to have a worse rotation than last year, but Duquette is saying “hold my beer.”

Castro is going to get a spot I can say that with some certainty now. I still can’t see how we don’t sign 2 guys this offseason. We don’t have any other options. Castro or Ynoa will take the 5 slot but idk after that.

Cortes the rule 5 pick from the Yankees is going to get every chance to take one of the rotation spots, with Ynoa penciled in for another.

I’d be more interested in this if he hit left handed. Right now he’s redundant with Hays and Rickard.

He is way less useful with much less upside than Hays and a different kind of meh relative to Rickard..

Oriole’s will resign Tillman and he will actually have a banner year. Fear not. Then the big left handed bat coming in a day or two. I am……..

Jaycob Brugman should get a decent amount of playing time. I liked how he played with the A’s. I believe Brugman can get him self a everyday job. He can blossom to good potential. Surprised the A’s let him go since they seem to keep guys with good obp and a decent average. Good power as well.
