Cardinals Sign Greg Holland

By Steve Adams | March 31, 2018 at 8:38am CDT

March 31: The Cardinals have made the signing official.

March 30: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that Holland’s salary is not pro-rated. He will earn the full $14MM sum regardless of when he is added to the big league roster. Beyond that, his contract comes with the standard awards bonus package ($50K for All-Star or a playoff MVP Award, $250K for Rivera/Hoffman Relief Award, etc.).

It does not, however, sound like anything will be finalized today. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets that the Cards are still reviewing his physical and still need to lay out a preparation plan for Holland to get into game shape.

March 29, 10:35am: Heyman tweets that Holland will earn $14MM on a one-year deal with the Cardinals.

10:25am: Mark Saxon of The Athletic reports that the two sides have agreed to terms on a deal (Twitter link). The contract is still pending a physical.

10:16am: The Cardinals and free-agent closer Greg Holland are moving close to a deal, reports FanRag’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link). The 32-year-old Holland, a client of the Boras Corporation, is the lone remaining top-tier free agent that has yet to sign.

Greg Holland | Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Holland paced the NL with 41 saves and 58 games finished as the Rockies’ closer last season but stands alone as the last remaining top-tier free agent on the open market. Reports have indicated that the righty received an offer to return to the Rockies earlier this winter, but Colorado pivoted and signed Wade Davis after Holland didn’t bite on their initial proposal.

St. Louis will stand to benefit from a collapsed market, as they’ll now land one of the better available relievers of the winter for a value that falls shy of the $17.2MM qualifying offer and $15MM player option that Holland rejected back in November. The Cards had previously been set to enter the season with Luke Gregerson handling ninth-inning duties, but the veteran Gregerson has been slowed by an oblique injury in camp and, more recently, a hamstring issue that will shelve him to open the year. Dominic Leone figures to open the season in the ninth, though he could very well give way to Holland once the former All-Star works his way into game shape.

The Cardinals, clearly, will be hoping for the dominant form that Holland displayed through the season’s first three months before wilting in the second half of the year. August proved to be a particularly dreadful month for the former Rockies stopper, as he surrendered 14 runs on the strength of four homers in just 9 1/3 innings.

While he rebounded with a solid finish in September, Holland’s fastball velocity and location were off for much of the summer — even when his ERA wasn’t reflecting it — and his struggles returned against the Diamondbacks in the NL Wild Card game. Of course, given that the 2017 season was Holland’s first back from September 2015 Tommy John surgery, it’s perhaps not surprising that he faded down the stretch. Certainly, it’s plausible that fatigue played a significant role in those difficulties.

In order to sign Holland, the Cardinals will forfeit their second-highest pick (their second-round selection) in the 2018 draft as well as $500K of international money. Because he signed a contract for less than $50MM in total guarantees, Holland will net the Rockies a draft pick after Competitive Balance Round B — in the 75 to 80 range of the draft.

1 year deal. Surprises me they were willing to part with the draft pick for only 1 year deal and still pay a premium for someone who struggled late last year.

I think that you are going to see a much different approach toward giving QO’s going forward because of the reasonableness of the past off season salaries.Whereas only three years ago no one had ever taken one only the superstars and upper level players will be turning them down now.

You can’t get ready to play MLB by staying in shape. Pitchers need to gradually up their pitch count, while hitters say they need at least 50 at bats. Jake Arrieta signed March 12 and isn’t ready yet. Holland is a reliever, so he doesn’t need to get a high pitch count, but he still needs to make sure he isn’t overdoing. He’ll probably need about a week from the first day he throws.

The Cubs actually were in on Mikolas, but the Cards ST location in Jupiter, FL reportedly helped sway him to sign with St. Louis (surprised that was an important factor, but to each his own). Source: stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/back-hom…
Nothing against Mikolas, but from a Cubs perspective, this and Cobb rejecting a 3/$42M offer were arguably blessings in disguise, as they enabled the opportunistic signing of Darvish. [That assumes the Cubs would’ve signed Chatwood regardless, who Epstein said the Cubs aggressively pursued and outbid a competitive market to acquire.]

Darvish is an incremental improvement over Arrieta. The Cub’s rotation is not great. True, Arrieta may have already pitched his best baseball but I don’t think you’ll get much more out of Yu than you got outta Jake. Lester, Quintana, Hendricks and Chatwood aren’t scaring anyone in the playoffs.

And please tell me again who you replaced Wade Davis with?

Dominated? I think you’re thinking of Jansen. Jansen had a playoff ERA of 1.62 as the closer to Morrow’s 3.95. Morrow gave up 5 runs in 5.1 innings in the World Series. I realize 4 were in one game, but he wasn’t even the closer then. Guys don’t usually get better going from being a setup man to a closer. Morrow was good in LA because he had Jansen behind him. We just have different ideas as to what “dominant” is. Morrow would have been a great pickup if it was then followed by signing Davis or something. But to be a team hoping for a World Series and relying on him to close… That’s silly.

How many times dd certain Card fans come to the Cubs board EVERYDAY, every trade, every signing, and release. Yeah I’m sure the Cubs will regret letting a AA player whos ERA was 13+ and War -0.7 go. Come on man. I do like SOME Card fans who I can talk to. Others are idiots. I’ll agree there are some Cub fans the same way. But what comes around goes around.

No Name commenter was on the board for the opening pitch. IF you’re a Card fans than stay on you’re own board talk about you’re own team why you worried about some other team. Not like anybody can control either team. Love to get a long with Card fans but some people you just can’t reach. BTW commenter saying Happ will start off with a SO sure shut him up for a few iinnings lol.

Injuries to key players happen. The Cardinals have certainly dealt with it in division and league championship seasons w/ in the last 15 years to varying degrees of success.

I’m wondering what happens if brewers staring rotation goes down and yellich cain and Braun. Obviously it changes outlook. It did last year. 2016 was perfect season for cubs. Last year every starting pitcher spent time in dL . Still won division .

Injuries—well last season they had ALL FIVE starting pitchers on the DL, lost Russell for a month and a half, Contreras for a month, Zobrist and Heyward each went on the DL twice, Bryant played a third of the season with a lingering finger injury…Schwarber didn’t produce much and they still won 92 games and the division, after being UNDER .500 at the all star break. Injuries do happen, but they seem to be deep enough to at least contend if they are hit hard.

Cubs won’t be in 4th or 3rd or 2nd. Injuries lol. Cubs have the biggest dept in MLB.

1st Base NP WC, Cant, Happ, Zorb, Baez, KB all can play first base

3rd Base NP Happ, Zorb, Baez, La Stella, all can play 3rd

Doubtful Rizzo ever get hurt unless someone hits him in the head.

Cubs players are rotated a lot and are not over played and rested. Unlike Dusty did with Wash and MM does with St.L

SP we can go 7 strong in SP IF we had too. So an injury to a SP can be replaced easy. MM for starters.

Good lord only one World Series in 3 years ? How many teams would love that? How many teams sweep? Did Astros last year ? Cards in 2011? So it’s the 2016 took 7 games to win world champion Chicago Cubs? I’ll take it . Ask Kershaw he would take it too. Cubs could win 10 in a row and some cardinal fans would still whine. All you guys go to Vegas and put your money where your mouth is if so sure division is cardinals and not Cubs. Only one World Series out of 3 . Ha ha love it

#59. The cost of this transaction is $14M + pick #59 + bonus pool $$. IMO, that cost is too high and it is an overpay. Any pick the redbirds received via the Lance Lynn QO/FA signing is irrelevant when calculating the cost of this independent transaction. I understand why the redbirds and their fans are comfortable with overpaying.

The Giants just don’t have a good farm system and they don’t really have anyone on their roster to trade for prospects. They are in a strange place as a high-revenue and high-spending team with an old manager who is more comfortable with veterans, it would seem. I think the Giants might actually tread water for a while.

Definition of insufferable fans- posting about cubs on an article about the cardinals. Congratulations you have now surpassed us as most insufferable fans in baseball.

This will be sure to solidify the Cards locking up third place in the NL Central..

Too bad Holland will only come in when the Cards are ahead, can’t pitch more than about an inning per game, and will be sure to be misused and abused by Matheny..

Let me tell you this, Cardinals are not fighting for 3rd place. No the Cardinals are not fighting for 2nd. NO, the Cardinals are NOT fighting for a WC spot. the Cardinals in my opinion are the smartest organization out there and they are fighting for the division. Period.

Fans been saying that now for 2 seasons. believe believe so says Fat MO and MM counting his money while at the drive thu in his Ferrari. Believe.

100% for sure Card will be in 3rd place. Holland won’t make a difference. If he did he be well signed by now and as stated by another poster will be lucky to avoid injury in the next 3 months because MM will burn him out. 100% for sure. But ok I will bite will see.. Good luck that is all I will say and believe what ever floats you’re boat. Heard that story before YAWN!

After yesterdays performance you will need more than Holland. 15 SO – OF 0-12 Fine Group of Men. Yes Sir Fine Group of Men.

Which one has a Ferrari? MM is an idiot and seems like an FJ Cruiser kind of D-bag. But seriously, this team is the definition of average and will finish 3rd or fourth. Life long cards fan, but we dumped our season a tickets a few years ago when we realized MO only looked good when he was in TLR’s shadows just signing off on whatever Tony wanted. MM has always been an idiot and easily out managed by his counterparts. It’s absolutely shocking how little situational baseball knowledge a former good defensive catcher turned out to be.

You are no cardinals fan saying 3rd or 4th. Stop acting.

Just realistic and don’t get delusional at the beginning of every year. This decline was seen coming in 2012. Average team with the leagues worst manager.

Holland may be that stabilizing veteran presence in the bullpen that can lead the Cardinals closer to equality with the Cubs
    Great addition
Now Matheny/Maddux has the Arsenal for matchups and closing

Holland won’t do a bit of difference if the Cards SO 15 times and their SP gives up 4 runs and their BP gives up 5 more…

Like the tenth comment I have seen cubs fans bashing on the cardinals FIRST game. The first game does not mean the whole season. You seem like a baseball fan you should know that…

They gave 14m to Holland for a year, but they couldn’t offer that much to Lance Lynn?

Wth is going on? Holland’s ERA was above 6 the 2nd half of the season, and 8.47 over his last 19 games. How does he get 14m and Lynn only gets 12m??? That just doesn’t make any sense…

It’s called good agent from bad agent. Love him or hate him, Boras gets it done.

Moose was his ultimate failure (possibly worst ever) and Holland — to an extent was also a Boras failure, rejecting 2-3 higher higher offers.

But Holland making more guaranteed money than Lynn on a one-year deal makes Lance Lynn’s agent look like a failure. This is why for better or for worse Boras holds out to the very end -and this time— it worked.

Both good points. I would want Lynn as starter over Holland as a reliever. If you are a player you have to go Boras if you want the big money

That’s because the starting pitching market was down

and the reliever market has skyrocketed the last couple of years. That’s just the market!

      Max,
Stl offered lance the 17.2mil Q-offer, and Lance declined.
