Injury Notes: Gregerson, Marlins, Mets, Pomeranz, Dickerson

By Steve Adams | March 8, 2018 at 10:08am CDT

Presumptive Cardinals closer Luke Gregerson is dealing with a strained oblique, writes Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. While such injuries can often take upwards of a month to heal, it seems that Gregerson’s could be more minor, with manager Mike Matheny referring to it only as a “little setback” that “doesn’t seem very bad.” That said, doctors haven’t placed a timeframe on Gregerson’s return to action, either. The 33-year-old Gregerson (34 in May) has pitched just once this spring, and it’s currently unclear when he’ll get back on the mound for his next appearance.

A few more health situations from around the league that are worth monitoring…

  • Marlins right-hander Brett Graves is also dealing with an oblique issue of undetermined severity, writes MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro. He’ll be shut down from throwing “for at least a few more days” as the team further evaluates. Graves’ status is of particular note given that he’s with the Marlins after being selected out of the Athletics organization in the Rule 5 Draft. While the rebuilding Marlins are clearly in a better position than most to carry a Rule 5 pick for a whole season, even a short absence would truncate the team’s ability to evaluate him first-hand this spring. Graves, 25, pitched to a 4.47 ERA between Class-A Advanced and Double-A last season, logging 56 1/3 innings with 9.1 K/9 against 2.1 BB/9. He’s allowed five runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings this spring. Frisaro also notes that righty Brian Ellington won’t throw for a few days due to tendinitis in his right biceps. Ellington is vying for a big league bullpen job after whiffing 48 hitters in 44 2/3 MLB frames last year. Those strikeouts, however, came with a sky-high 7.25 ERA.
  • Amed Rosario apparently overcompensated for his ailing knee to the point where he developed some tightness in his hamstring and groin, writes Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. None of the issues facing Rosario seem especially serious, as Mets manager Mickey Callaway suggested that the Rosario’s absence from the lineup for the past few days “probably” won’t jeopardize his Opening Day readiness. That said, Callaway did note that it’s at least somewhat of a concern that Rosario is missing some “valuable reps and playing time.” Ackert also notes that Jacob deGrom is set to make his first spring start on Sunday. That may not be soon enough to be ready for Opening Day, but it seems likely to have him on track to start one of the team’s early regular-season games.
  • The Red Sox were able to breathe a sigh of relief this week as Drew Pomeranz was cleared to restart a throwing program after a brief scare with a mild flexor strain, writes the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham. Manager Alex Cora didn’t want to proclaim that Pomeranz would be ready to go for the beginning of the season just yet, though Abraham notes that his current schedule should allow him to be healthy enough to take the ball for Boston’s fourth or fifth game of the year, barring any setbacks.
  • Padres outfielder Alex Dickerson, who was diagnosed with a sprained UCL recently, could be looking at Tommy John surgery to repair his throwing elbow, tweets Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Dickerson, who missed all of the 2017 season due to back surgery, is still considering a non-surgical rehab program as well, however.

I honestly think the hold-up with the Cardinals signing Holland is they’re probably negotiating a deal with Moustakas as well. The Cards definitely have another signing in their budget.

Because the cardinals fo doesn’t do things just to appease their fanbase.. a fantasy that claims to be baseball smart but in reality most of them haven’t a clue just how good they’ve got it and have had it for 17+ years.. in short the risk and the money are not worth the risk or the blocking of cheap cost controlled arms.. all of you look at cards payroll obligations from 2020 on.. this team is set to succeed and have money to spend for years years

No, Holland has massive regression in his profile, will cost picks and international money, and be expensive and limit the teams flexibility to do so much more.

I realize fans don’t love the bullpen, but it’s easy to see why they did what they did. And it wasn’t necessarily to save a buck.

Holland has similar projections to Norris and Gregerson. Leone has plenty of upside as well.

You won’t find a FG article glorifying Holland

This injury could give them the justification they need to sign Holland. Is he the best option for STL? Probably not. I’d rather see them deal for Colome, but it’s pretty clear TB wants a king’s ransom in prospects, so it’s back to Holland. Cards may be willing to muddle through the first half with a committee of closers like WAS did last year before acquiring several closers. I think they’ll either have to get one now or get one later.

Four relievers Steamer projected FIP in 2018:

      Leone – 3.74
      Gregerson – 3.53
      Norris – 3.74
      Holland – 3.87
      Lyons – 3.76

Cards fans want to pay the worst projected reliever in this group $15+M

No they don’t sign Holland.. closers other than maybe 2-3 in the game are unpredictable and their year to year results vary too wildly to pay what closers get on the open market. I won’t get into the fact that saving your best pitcher for the last inning is dumb… but I digress.. this just gives the young arms a shot that they weren’t getting. I’d rather have tui, helsey, Hicks, Hudson,Reyes than gregerson anyways. If healthy he has a role but if not oh well.. I just hope maddux is in full control of pitchers, bullpen management etc. If that’s the case they will be a good if not great pen.

Don’t worry, Davies season was artificially propped by his win total. His metrics show a below average starter whether healthy or not. Milwaukees starting pitching has a decent chance to be the worst in the NL.

Pomeranz has had this issue for a long time.
The Red Sox will be lucky if they get 150 innings out of him in 2018.
And he’ll be worn out for the playoffs.
Hope they have a backup plan with ERod out as well.
    Let’s see Sale and Porcello.
Price is coming off an injury.
And he sucks in the playoffs.
    And that’s it..
Does that add up to 93 wins to you?
How did Fan Graphs get to 93 wins?

Sox are walking a fine line with their pitching. Price is key, though I fear his elbow won’t last. A few innings in relief last year doesn’t settle my mind. I know the money is spent, but I’ve always liked Lance Lynn.

They have three very good prospects they will be calling up over the next year (triple H’s), and because the market didn’t offer any bullpen upgrades other than Davis who got $17+ per year and cost picks and he is getting older.

Holland isn’t an upgrade, and turned down nearly what Davis already got, and costs picks and International money.

The best bet was to go the trade route (Leone, nobody better was really moved), and find good value signings….like Norris, Gregerson, and Motte.

Norris showed how great he can be in the first half of last year before getting hurt. His projections are almost identical to Holland’s.

Gregerson dealt with a ton of bad luck last year, most notably, a ton of home runs into the Crawford boxes that won’t be home runs at Busch, that wrecked his season.

Leone gets weak contact, and Lyons and Reyes should get every opportunity they can.

There is so much bullpen pitching, and it’s a fickle position with a lot of volatility any way.

Come June, fans won’t be crying about the bullpen as much (though, fans always hate their own bullpens unless they have a potential hall of fame closer, least appreciated position in the game).
