Orioles Return Rule 5 Pick Jose Mesa Jr. To Yankees

By Jeff Todd | March 28, 2018 at 11:03am CDT

The Orioles announced today that Rule 5 pick Jose Mesa Jr. has been returned to the Yankees organization. He’ll report to Triple-A.

Mesa, a 24-year-old righty, had recently been designated for assignment. Having cleared waivers, he’ll head back to the organization that selected him in the 24th round of the 2012 draft.

Baltimore had considered Mesa for a bullpen spot along with two other Rule 5 pitchers, but elected against keeping him. Now, he’ll wait for an opportunity in a loaded New York pen.

Mesa did not turn in a compelling showing this spring, but has shown his share of promise in the minors. Last year, he pitched to a 1.93 ERA with 10.8 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 84 innings over 29 appearances — including eight starts — at the High-A and Double-A levels.

With Jose Mesa Jr, the Yankees are no doubt the best team in baseball. Easily th step that allows them to overtake the Astros.

That’s not sarcasm, it’s trolling. This one has a track record.

Haven’t really noticed him before, but yea this is a troll attempt. This guy Bald Vinny is of course Goblins who has trolled Yankees fans on any and every article…

Right. But if I objected to every post wherein one member trolls either the fans of his hated team or all the opponents of his favorite team I’d have no time left to watch baseball. I just ignore that ordinary sort of trolling as a lost cause unless an opportunity for ridicule presents itself.

Besides, my impression is that PF is a particularly weird and nasty sort, had a bunch of stuff deleted by site admins, iirc. Keep an eye out and tell me whether you agree—I could be wrong.

Enjoy tomorrow. Alas, my OD has already been postponed.

          Just to add:

Unless my memory is failing me this PF announced his presence at this site with a series of ‘first’ posts about just getting out of “the joint.” Weird performance art, at best.

Orioles probably take him again next season unless the Yankees ship him off to another team before then. He’s not cracking their 40 this year.

That sounds possibly like a Sox fan who knows there are other teams better but would never concede the title of best to the Yanks. Or am I simply being cynical?

From the overhyped Yankee prospect department: Rob Refsnyder. Where is he now?

Why do people think it’s the Yankee organization that creates these rankings for their prospects? Why is it that every other organization’s prospect rankings are “real” but ours are the result of overhype? The Yanks are certainly not the only team to have prospects that fail.

But….for the record, Judge, Sanchez, Severino, Betances, Green, Montgomery, Bird were all Yankee prospects now holding down mlb jobs in 2018. And furthermore, our prospects must be well regarded by other teams that agreed to send us Gray, Chapman, Robertson, Didi and others via trade for prospects.
