Astros Option Jake Marisnick

By Jeff Todd | May 16, 2018 at 10:52am CDT

10:52am: Outfielder Tony Kemp will get the call to replace Marisnick, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic (via Twitter).

7:30am: The Astros announced after last night’s game that center fielder Jake Marisnick has been optioned back to Triple-A. It’s not yet clear who’ll take his spot on the active roster.

It seems the hope in Houston is that Marisnick can get back on track with some time spent at Fresno. As MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart reports, skipper A.J. Hinch said after the game that the speedy outfielder will receive “a run of at-bats he’s not going to get [in the majors] over the next ten days or however long he’s down there.”

The current campaign has certainly been frustrating to this point for the 27-year-old Marisnick, who had posted a breakout 2017 effort. Of course, his excellent output last year — including a .243/.319/.496 slash with 16 home runs and nine steals — came with a worrisome 34.7% strikeout rate.

Thus far in 2018, the swings and misses have ruled the day. Marisnick is striking out at an alarming 47.1% clip and has drawn just a single walk in 87 plate appearances. His power output is way down as well, though it’s the .151 OBP that is most concerning.

While the ’Stros certainly value Marisnick’s quality baserunning and fielding, they understandably feel he needs some time to figure things out at the plate. He is earning $1.9MM this year and remains eligible for two more seasons of arbitration.

This guy can play D but you have to hit and maintain a .333 obp. In today’s game if you can’t find a way on base on an average of 1 every 3 times theres no spot for you in the lineup because everyone can hit homers and play defense.

True. I hope the clubhouse responds well to it and it ignites them. I hope it does the same for Jake. He’s a beloved part of this team. He and Springer are best friends.
I’m intrigued to see who they bring up. Davis? White? Or could we see a Tucker call up?

Well that’s sweet they are friends and he is “beloved”. Thing is you have to hit and produce to be on an MLB roster. This joker has more career K’s than hits so there is really no track record for him as a successful MLB player. He’s a AAAA player at best.

He also might be the best outfielder in the game.

I’m not sure what authority you have to belittle anyone on the Astros roster, or any MLB roster for that matter. He’s seen regular playing time with the Astros (WS champs) for a long time now. Not sure what you’ve been doing since Jake has been an Astro. I’m assuming not much.

Hmmmm up until LAST year the Astros were not much, so playing for them really does not say much does it???

playing Major League baseball on a last place team is still better than commenting on a trade rumors website

Ok, Greg. So the last time you paid any attention to the Astros was 2014.

If memory serves me correctly Marisnick was “HURT” and not on the WS roster. He was healthy enough to be on the roster but HE was not so spare me the BS about WS. I think they would have made it without him and the obviously WON it without him. BTW you will see Tony Kemp was called up and I believe that was my suggestion so move on and comment on something you know about like knitting.

Not Tucker and add Kemp to the list. All three of those guys (Kemp, Davis and White) are doing well in AAA. Kemp is the only solid OF of that group

Fresno is a launching pad. That’s his best shot of at least getting his offensive morale up, As long as Marwin and Fisher continue to struggle, he’s still got a foot in the door, but if either of those guys start coming around or JD Davis/Kyle Tucker show up, he’s done as an Astro.

all he does is strikeout it seems, he needs to find his stride in Fresno.

Tony Kemp should be the guy that gets the call up.

You called it. I like Kemp, but I feel his style of play is being obsoleted in today’s game (a lot like how Howard and Drummond are being phased out of the NBA, replaced by guys like Greek Freak).

Trade him to Rangers for Diekman. Astros get a lefty out of the pen, Rangers get a right handed bat. High number of strike outs is the norm in Arlington.

Trade Jeff Todd, who clearly is not a top flight sports writer, to Miami.

Marisnick may do better in another organization.

I do think he is a better player than Kemp or Fisher.

Surprisingly, the Astros offense is in a funk. It makes perfect sense to drop the worst hitter and look for a spark. Jake Marisinick is batting .141. That wasn’t even MLB worthy 100 years ago during the deadball era. Jake is allot like Mikie Mahtook. Unfortunately, neither have been hitting much. Evan Gattis is likely next.

Hate to say it but Marisnick is becoming Houston’s version of Randall Grichuk. Showed flashes of brilliance at the plate but just can’t put together any semblance of consistency. If he doesn’t put it together this year I’ll predict that he’ll be traded to SF in the off season or sooner.

When does Fisher go down? Can’t hit, no arm, fly balls confuse him. All he has is power and speed. Bring up DAVIS!

Astros need to focus on LF Dh RP or 2

And on that note I would personally look into Adrian Beltre and Jose Abreau

Remember Adam Everett? Monster SS but batted a humble .100-.200 Reminds of Jake. He’s also a defensive monster.
