Stephen Vogt Suffers Career-Threatening Shoulder Injury; Mauricio Dubon Tears ACL

By Steve Adams | May 8, 2018 at 6:47pm CDT

6:47pm: Vogt’s injury puts not only the remainder of the 2018 season in jeopardy but could also be career-threatening, Haudricourt explains in a full column on the matter. Vogt suffered damage to the anterior capsule, the rotator cuff and the labrum in his right shoulder while making a throw to third base in a rehab game this weekend. The veteran fought back tears when describing the injury to reporters (Twitter link with video, via McCalvy). He’ll head to L.A. to be evaluated by renowned surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache later this week.

“The biggest emotion is sadness,” said Vogt. “It’s hard. I’m upset. … Obviously, there are big implications here with a second shoulder injury like this that I don’t like to think about but I am thinking about. I felt everything go wrong that could go wrong with a shoulder.”

4:02pm: The Brewers announced on Tuesday that infield prospect Mauricio Dubon has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the remainder of the season. The tough injury news didn’t stop there, either, as GM David Stearns told reporters that catcher Stephen Vogt has re-injured the anterior capsule in his right shoulder and also has some damage in his rotator cuff (Twitter link via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). He’s headed for a second opinion, but season-ending surgery is possible for Vogt, McCalvy adds. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, meanwhile, tweets that surgery is “inevitable.”

Both bits of news are significant for the Brewers. Stearns revealed today that Dubon was in consideration for his first call to the Major Leagues when he incurred the injury. The 23-year-old, acquired alongside Travis Shaw in the Tyler Thornburg swap with the Red Sox two winters ago, was hitting .343/.348/.574 with four homers, nine doubles, two triples and six stolen bases in 114 plate appearances with Triple-A Colorado Springs. He’d have been just the second native of Honduras to reach the Majors, per Baseball-Reference, though that distinction will now be placed on hold for at least a season. (Former Astros outfielder Gerald Young was the first.)

As for Vogt, there won’t be any definitive word on his status until he receives further opinions from additional medical experts, but the outlook certainly isn’t promising. He’d been near a return prior to aggravating the shoulder in a rehab appearance with Double-A Biloxi over the weekend, per Haudricourt. Vogt’s return might’ve come at the expense of struggling backup Jett Bandy, who is out of minor league options, but Bandy’s spot on the club now looks more secure with Vogt sidelined indefinitely. (Christian Bethancourt and Jacob Nottingham are both hitting quite well in Triple-A, however, providing additional in-house alternatives.)

Remember, we will have the worst pitching staff in baseball. Wait, silly me, they have the second best bull pen and there pitching staff has been solid. Should be fun when Nelson comes back and Corbin gets his call. Go Crew.

Cubbies could have been watching highlights from their last World Series victory in October. Can the Brewers say the same?

Haha the thought process of Nelson coming back remains humorous. See Luck, Andrew and now Vogt, Stephen….and the Google labral surgery to educate yourself.

Well he might come back but I think The Brewers and definitely the fans are thinking to much of it…he is not going to step in and be an ace or for that matter a great pitcher…he is going to have some rough go’s before he is anything he once was…I mean after that surgery he is not stepping back in midseason and leading your staff…imho

Let’s not act like the cubs are the team to beat because they had 1 good year out of 150 or whatever it is. The cardinals are and will be the team to beat in the NL central. And this is coming from a giants fan who routinely hates on st Louis, because why would any free agent want to go to that city?!?!

Why not just discuss baseball without the juvenile misogyny. Also a pro tip: It helps to maintain some distance between yourself and the team you support. Remember, when they lose it’s not your fault and when they win, even when they win a championship, it is in no way a personal accomplishment for you. Cheers.

Labrum tears used to be what destroyed pitchers careers, not the UCL’s of now. They were fairly common also back in 60’s and 70’s when they did not know how to train to avoid them. Wayne Garland, a pitcher have mentioned many times here had that one.

After the labrum tears and before the UCL was the dread of the 80s pitcher…the rotator cuff injury. Whatever happened to those? It used to gobble up about 5-10 pitchers a year, but I haven’t heard about that injury in forever.

This is devastating, our best prospect at an area of need, as well as a quality backup Catcher (a weak position for us) just gone. Obviously best wishes to them, but some moves need to be made. If we want to compete now we need to get a middle infielder and maybe a Catcher soon.

I think it’s time for Brewer fans to calm down a little. Any team depending on a significant contribution from Eric Sogard isn’t going anywhere anyway. Stephen Vogt couldn’t throw last year, he wasn’t going to be able to throw this year. He didn’t hit enough to make up for the bases he’d give up any time he was behind the plate.
The Brewers didn’t want Walker back at any price. Last year they got a good look at just how slow he really is. I have throwrugs that cover more ground than he does, and his bat didn’t come close to making up for that. And he’s an injury risk to boot.
The Brewers weren’t counting on Miley. He was a lotto ticket. They may still get something from him…it would be a bonus.
      The real concerns…
Brandon Woodruff has to become a big league pitcher. He can’t go 3 & 2 on every hitter and pitch count himself out of the game by the 4th inning. They need him as a dependable starter this year. He’s on the verge of becoming a bust.
If the Brewers aren’t going to get any offence from the 2nd base spot or from the catchers, and it looks like they won’t, they’ll need two players to get serious and build on last year’s production. Orlando Arcia & Domingo Santana can’t regress. If they have 4 dead spots in the lineup they’ll wind up battling the Pirates to see who finishes in 4th place in the division.

I agree that Woodruff is a little frustrating, but that’s exactly my point. Pina-Vogt worked last year (not top tier, but not bad) but I really wanted us to sign Castillo. And Villar is a disaster. If we pulled off a trade for, say, Starlin Castro and a Catcher, that boosts our offense back to what it should be. I do really hope Arcia picks back up but I’m not counting on it. Pitching is a whole other can of worms.

Why are there more comments about Dubon? Vogt is a fine ballplayer whos injury might end his career. Was a great ballplayer, and a great guy when I watched him in Oakland. No hate towards Dubon or anything but a torn ACL is nothing.
