Mets Designate P.J. Conlon For Assignment

By Steve Adams | May 30, 2018 at 4:21pm CDT

The Mets announced that they’ve designated left-hander P.J. Conlon for assignment and transferred Juan Lagares to the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday. Their spots on the 40-man roster will go to right-handers Tim Peterson and Scott Copeland, each of whom has been selected to the Major League roster (as was reported earlier today). Furthermore, New York optioned right-hander Jacob Rhame and infielder Phillip Evans to Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled left-hander Buddy Baumann from Triple-A.

Conlon, 24, enjoyed a strong season with the Mets’ Double-A affiliate in 2017, tossing 136 innings of 3.38 ERA ball with 7.2 K/9 against 2.5 BB/9, but he’s endured a disastrous 2018 campaign so far. Though Conlon has had one significant milestone in 2018, making his MLB debut, his results on the mound have been ugly in both the Majors and the minors. The former 13th-round pick (2015) was tagged for seven runs on 12 hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for the Mets, and he’s limped to a 6.58 ERA with 7.5 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9 in 39 2/3 innings out of the rotation in Las Vegas.

The Mets will have a week to trade Conlon or place him on outright or release waivers. He’s not considered to be an elite prospect, but he entered the year ranked 24th among Mets farmhands, per MLB.com, where Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo suggested that he could ultimately function as a multi-inning bullpen piece capable of setting down both lefties and righties.

He has been mostly lights out as a minor league pitcher. Losing this guy makes no sense as both Callaway and Alderson were impressed with PJ in Spring Training. Conlon could make it as a lefty reliever in the Jerry Blevins mold when Blevins was a pitching like a successful lefty specialist. Letting him go is ridiculous especially since the Mets have so many pitching issues including health, ability and duration. Don’t forget PJ was only in AA when he was brought up to pitch for the Mets. That is quite a jump from AA to the Majors. The kid simply needs more time and seasoning. PERIOD! If I’m the Mets I would want to keep PJ Conlon,

He’s definitely a claim and stash candidate. He wasnt drafted until 2015 meaning if he clears waivers (the first time) he’s under organization control through 2021. With those minor league numbers, non-contenders should take a $20k shot on the kid.

He has nothing on his fastball and his location is pretty awful. Not a major league prospect by any stretch.

He is a good mentor for Rosario is probably the only reason he is hanging on and he has a little speed. Dont get me wrong i am a big fan of Reyes but I agree its time and maybe hire him as a special assistant or something like that. When Frazier comes back Guillorme will go down so he gets regular at bats. They should let the kid play everyday until frazier comes back though or get the lions share.

He will be gone hopefully when Frazier comes back. He is one of my all time favorites, hard to say it but he is done!
