Frisaro’s Latest: Straily, Ziegler, Barraclough, Realmuto

By Kyle Downing | July 28, 2018 at 10:44am CDT

Following this past offseason’s fire sale of MLB assets, the Marlins are likely to ship out a few more players in the coming days prior to the non-waiver trade deadline. MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro has some updates on the market for a wide number of Miami assets as we approach July 31st.

  • An Athletics scout paid a visit to Marlins Park this past Thursday, and Frisaro reports that he was there to watch right-hander Dan Straily pitch. Straily fell just short of a quality start in that outing, allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts against three walks. Astonishingly, Straily’s been able to hold together a 4.07 ERA this season despite a cataclysmic 5.41 FIP. After flashing improved control across the past two seasons, Straily has relapsed back to a 4.29 BB/9 and dealt with right forearm inflammation at the outset of the season, so it remains to be seen whether he’d be an attractive trade target to the A’s organization that drafted and developed him.
  • After a rough start to the season that saw him lose his job as the team’s closer, sidewinder Brad Ziegler has rebounded nicely to post a 3.08 ERA in 39 appearances since the start of May (though peripherals paint a worse picture). The Marlins have plenty of potential suitors for the right-hander, Frisaro says, and lists the Cubs, Indians, Red Sox and A’s as potential fits. It’s worth noting that the latter two clubs are already familiar with Ziegler, as he’s spent time pitching for both organizations. The 38-year-old has already been traded twice in his lengthy career, and is playing out the final months of a two-year, $16MM deal.
  • Ziegler’s not the only reliever fielding interest, Frisaro notes, as nearly a dozen scouts have been in Miami recently to watch Kyle Barraclough, Drew Steckenrider and Adam Conley pitch. Last we heard, the Marlins had placed a high price on each of the three, but it’s still certainly plausible that many teams would be willing to pay that price for relievers that come with such controllable relief arms; each of the aforementioned three is under team control through at least 2021.
  • The Nationals still aren’t having any luck trying to pry catcher J.T. Realmuto from the hands of the Marlins. Frisaro reports that Miami’s NL East rival once again checked in on the club’s best trade asset, but were told that any package for Realmuto would require Washington to fork over both outfield prospect Victor Robles and shortstop prospect Carter Kieboom, both of whom are generally seen as top 100 prospects. Unsurpringly, conversations didn’t go far.

i can’t see Straily as a high cost starter with his stats. My guess is he gets some low level prospect.

He should be pretty much free, and unless they plan on moving him to the pen, he’s not a great fit on a contender.

If the Marlins want ten controllable years of Robles and Kieboom, they’d have to send other assets to the Nats along with Realmuto – like Guzman and Straily.

that’s a dumb comment. getting arguably a top 3 major league catcher for one is not a crazy ask. They are really good prospects but stud catchers don’t grow on trees

A controllable Top 3 MLB catcher is worth a Top 100 prospect… and then some.

That’s a ridiculous comment, Realmuto is literally the #1 catcher in MLB. He’s absolutely worth at least one of them, and probably both. Stop prospect-hounding, they will only break your heart.

the only reason he’s not worth both is because thos Nats team will need young players when they rebuild in 2-3 years.

Exactly. Realmuto is probably the best catcher in the league and at worst is second behind Posey. Add in the fact that he’s controlled and he’d be one of the few players I’d be willing to part with a potential star prospect for.

Imagine if that former idiot GM ever pulled off a trade a few years back when Swihart and Henry Owens were top 20 “can’t miss prospects.” Never mind spending about $200 million of Mr Henry’s money on 3 guys not playing on the big league squad in Boston (Hanley, Pablo and Rusney)… yup gotta hold onto those prospects for dear life and spend wildly in free agency. IBackTheNats6, YOU must be high if you really believe that the Nats shouldn’t part with their top 2 prospects to get Realmuto.

        1. He is arguably top catcher in MLB right now. He has highest WAR by any catcher in MLB.
        2. He won’t be a free agent until 2021. Under club control for 3 years after this one.
        3. Most importantly, he plays for a team that is in same division as Nats. Intradivision trade usually requires extra pay from the buyer.

Marlins have placed steep but fair price for him, imo. If that’s too rich for your blood, then too bad.

Then why do you Nats fans keep bringing Realmuto up.
It’s obvious that Jeter is not trading him for anything less than a teams #1 prospect and then some more.
Time to move on Nats fans!

Is it really though realmunto is a top 3 catcher in all of baseball and he is controllable for 2 more seasons beyond this one I believe. You have to give up talent to get talent and if they dont want to deal Robles that’s fine they just can’t have realmunto.

          Wrong……

Realmuto is not only a proven major leaguer, he’s the best catcher in baseball. Robles and Kieboom haven’t proven anything at the ML level

Catchers are the most important player on a team. Currently there is a shortage of quality catchers. Realmuto hits .300, some power, with a quality OBP. A terrific defensive catcher with a big arm, and handles pitchers well.

Mattingly-Jeter are baseball people, leaders, and winners. They say they want to build around Realmuto. There may not be a player in organized baseball more suited.

Stop saying top 3, Realmuto is clearly #1 by a long way. From Opening Day 2016 to present, he has the highest fWAR of all catchers. That’s a big enough sample to call it: he’s the best. And he’s also a full win ahead of all other catchers this season. He’s #1.

I have zero dog in this fight.
He’s top three. And he’s top two in catchers under 25. I’m not a Giants fan,but Posey has three rings that he played a major role in. Show some respect. Until they put him at 3rd or 1st base,he’s top three. But Realmuto has some serious talent, and I mean real serious talent.
If Miami wants those two prospects, let them hold out for them. You have to admit,Miami looks a lot better than what everyone thought. They could contend in under two years in that division.
You know what’s worse? Washington fans. They’ve won NOTHING. Their window is closing fast. Harper isn’t resigning.

So, it’s disrespectful to say Posey is 2 or 3?

Until he goes to first or thitd? So, if hevhits .220 with a .290 OBP and a .330 slugging, while throwing out 15vpercent, you would still say he was the bedt until they moved him?

          Rings are a team accomplishment

If you think Posey will be better than Realmuto over the last 2 months, and into the next two years, you are just plain wrong. Posey is not in the convo anymore, its not 2014. Posey’s top 5, Realmuto is FAR AND AWAY the number 1 catcher in MLB.

There is an argument to be made between Realmuto, Posey, Contreras and if he was to get his head out of his butt, Sanchez. Which is more valuable overall? WAR is not the end all, be all of stats in determining a players value.

Posey is playing hurt. Obviously the Giants should put him on the DL but instead they want to win at all cost. Posey can’t run and his power numbers are way down because of no leg strength. No question Realmuto is the better catcher this year and maybe the next 2 years if Posey age is catching up to him.

Only player I’d trade Sean Murphy for is Realmuto. One is the currently-hitting-the- ceiling version of the other, who’s still a year or two off.

That said, A’s really need to hold onto Puk, Luzardo, Beck & Lazarito. Murphy too, unless its with Miami. They have tons of other options and 50 grade prospects.

Right but remember there’s a guy named Murray that was just drafted – that makes Beck expendable. I’d trade Puk too due to fact that they have Luzardo – if they can keep both great but getting Realmuto would make the club WS contenders..

Murray is a wild card who could Bo Jackson himself and become instantly irrelevant. He absolutely makes no one expendable, let alone a guy Beane thinks is the next Trout in Beck. Gotta wait til Murray retires from football and has a full season of pro baseball under his belt before saying anything like that.

Puk’s value is also extremely low right now, nonsensical to trade him unless its for Realmuto or deGrom.

Murphy is the #1 defensive catcher in the minors. I just don’t see why you would trade 3 of the 4 best prospects for the A’s to get 1 all star and 2 back up type players. Miami would jump all over that trade. That is one of the biggest over pays for any player i seen on this comment board.

Reasons not to sell Realmuto are the same as they were with Yelich, arguably not even as obvious b/c of Yelichs great contract, and yet, he got traded for literally absolutely nothing. The Marlins have made abhorrent trades over the last several years, either giving up way too much, or getting very little back. As a Marlins fan, I have no reason to think they’ll get anything even decent if/when he gets moved

If it were me, Robles and Kieboom aren’t enough. I would need at least an interesting arm back as well, and the Nationals are thin there in the minor leagues. Robles has been injured all season, and has barely played above A ball. I need to see more of him before forming a real opinion on him. I’d have questions of Kieboom staying at SS, and its essential to get up the middle pieces in a Realmuto trade, in my opinion.

2 guys with great athleticism, but they were raw and have low floors, and a guy who had 1 good year, and then a terrible year when he was challenged at a higher level. At this point, I wouldnt be surprised if Yamamoto is the best player in the return, and he may be a backend SP at best. He was the lottery ticket in the deal. Obviously it’s still early, but I hated it when the deal went down. If they were trading Yelich, they needed more than what the Nationals gave up for Eaton, and they got significantly less. They needed safer high end guys, and they got massive risks

The Nats are smart…leave the fish with their catcher and 3 RPs lol…Too dumb to realize that Realmuto for Groome, or Chavis, Travis, Swihart, Houch would be a great swap…if they got any three of those players or some others…Ockimey Mata etc…

Reading these comments gives me great respect for A’s fans. Yall know Realmutos worth unlike these nats fans who just say random stuff. Nats GM heres a hint marlins are not trading realmuto to yall thats why they asked for kieboom yalls man crush. Underachieving nats yall were better as expos

So let me get this straight you are saying As fans are smarter because they know Realmutos’ value because they offered the 39th, 55th rated prospects plus two other (not top 100) minor leaguers for Realmuto and two other major leaguers??? And Nats fans aren’t because they said no to the 5th and 35th prospect for just Realmuto?

What he probably meant was national fans do not include Robles in trade offers.. Did the nationals offer their 2 best prospects for him? No they didn’t but like with most team fans there are a lot of fans that think they could get a allstar for some back up players. Watch what offer other teams would make for Harper if he was on the trade list. How about our 10th and 15th best prospect for him which is a good deal since he is a FA at the end of the year.

The A’s fans are a lot closer to a realistic deal than nats fans. On top of that the nats are in our division beating the crap out of us everytime we play. Now to realmuto not only is he the best catcher in the league he is a team leader who would resign with the marlins and if he would resign with the marlins he would resign with anyone. Nats dont have a team leader that plays everyday. In the begining of the season yall could have got muto for robles as the headliner but yall didnt want to. As the season progressed ur need for a catcher grew larger muto as a player became great and robles got hurt. And muto changed his mind on his stance with the marlins. Having said that the price went up big time for yall to acquire muto.
